LEROY - Saturday night’s makeup basketball game between the North Vermilion Patriots and the Abbeville Wildcats had to be halted at the 1:21 mark of the second quarter because an altercation occurred.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office escorted Abbeville players and fans out of the gym and off the premises.
North Vermilion fans and players remained inside the gym on lock-down until the parking lot cleared and the VPSO gave to okay to leave.
The altercation began after Abbeville picked up a loose ball near the corner of the court. The Abbeville player and NV played had struggled for the ball. The Abbeville player was out of bounds about to throw the ball in, when the North Vermilion swung and hit him, knocking both into the bleachers.

The altercation began and spilled into the stands.
Administrators from both schools rushed to gain control of the situation.
The game stopped immediately and there will be an LHSAA sportsmanship hearing regarding its future.
