North Vermilion Middle School will be built by start of 2014 school year

By the start of 2014 school year, North Vermilion Middle School will be opened.

The Vermilion Parish School Board awarded the lowest bid to construct the new middle school, which will be located behind North Vermilion High School.

Three contractors bid on the project and M.D. Descant Inc, was awarded the contract for being the low bidder. The school board accepted the bid of $7.9 million. Others bidders were Bessette Development Corporation ($8.2 million and Minvielle Lumber Company out of Abbeville ($8.9 million).

Gene Sellers Jr. informed the school board that M.D. Descant has been in business for a long time and is familiar with building schools. Sellers said this is the same contractor that built LeBlanc Elementary two years ago.

The new school will have a 3,900 square foot band room, which will cost $430,000.

The good news about the price of the school is that it is being paid for entirely by a grant.

Sellers told the school board the project is expected to take 16 months, depending on the weather. He is hoping the school will be completed by the end of next school year and teachers can begin moving in before the summer.

The school board will begin putting in the motion to search for a new North Vermilion Middle School principal.
