The Pirates, who are 2-2 this season, did all of their scoring in the second quarter, earning the 21 points they’d need to beat West St. Mary, who scored 20.
Head coach Stephen Lotief said the key was keeping West St. Mary’s quarterback under control. “Our defensive line really controlled the line of scrimmage,” he said. “Even when we were down, we never panicked.”
At the very end of the first quarter, West St. Mary scored but failed on the two point conversion. Kaplan would score with 9:28 left in the half off a four yard touchdown run from Tyson Broussard. Chanse Caillouet would score a minute and a half later on a two yard run to bring the Pirates up 14-6.
One 48-yard pass later, however, West St. Mary tied the game at 14-14. However, Caillouet would put an end to that with 4:17 left in the half by scoring on a four yard run. The score going into halftime was 21-14.
Close to the end of the third quarter, however, West St. Mary threatened to tie the game after their quarterback, Trevell Dixon, rain in a five yard touchdown. They would fail on the two point conversion however and neither time would get a chance to score again.
“Late in the game, we had a turnover on downs,” Lotief said. “But the defense responded well and didn’t let them score.”
The key to this game is the one word Lotief has told the team over and over again: consistency.
“There weren’t as many lazy mistakes,” he said. “In the past couple of games, we’d have a few good plays and then the opponents would get seven or eight guys into our backfield. This time, that only happened maybe once or twice.”
Lotief, however, said he won’t be satisfied until the team plays a perfect game.
“We stopped ourselves more than they stopped us,” Lotief said. “We had a lot of penalties.”
Kaplan begins their district play this week. They’ll return home to play Abbeville, who is also fresh off a victory against Franklin, another district rival.
