‘Operation Save A life’ to provide smoke detectors to some residences in Abbeville

There are plenty of programs and partnerships out there that can change lives.
Abbeville Fire Chief Jude Mire announced a program that can potentially save lives.
During Tuesday’s regular Abbeville City Council meeting, Mire discussed “Operation Save A Life.” Through a partnership with the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal, Mire said the program will offer smoke detectors to five dozen homes in Abbeville.
“We contacted the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office,” Mire said. “They provided us with 120 smoke detectors.
“We can put them in 60 residences.”
Each residence is required to have at least two smoke detectors, per guidelines from the Fire Marshal’s Office.
“We will go in to each house to install them,” Mire said. “Our firefighters will make sure that they are installed correctly.”
Beginning on Monday, Feb. 14, anyone interested can call 337-898-4277.
“Constituents can call the office at fire department,” Mire said. “We will take their name, number and address. When we’re ready to get it started, we will set up a time to have our guys go install all of these smoke detectors.”
With a limited supply, Mire said the smoke detectors will be available to the first 60 residents who call and get on the list.
“These are free,” Mire said, “and there are not many things that are free.”
According the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal, the office created this program to “combat the rise in fire-related injuries and deaths due to home fires.”
Mire said that after this round is distributed and installed, the hope is that more will be made available in the future.
“This is a great program,” Mire said. “It is one that can save a life.”
