Vermilion Parish's Joey Hebert had a passion for education, people

Vermilion Parish is mourning the loss of former educator Joey Hebert, who passed away peacefully at his residence in Henry due to cancer at the age of 74.
Hebert spent 35 years in the Vermilion Parish education system, and he closed out his career as the superintendent for five years from 2002 to 2007.
Funeral services for Hebert will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Henry, with public visitation starting at 9:30 a.m., a rosary at 11:30 a.m., and the funeral mass at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Mausoleum in Erath.

Unique dishes cooked at 10th Fur, Fin, and Feather Cookoff in Vermilion Parish

There is no denying that attending the yearly Don Dugas Memorial Fur, Fin, and Feather Cookoff is likely to involve tasting a diverse range of food options.
Last Saturday, the 10th annual cookoff took place at Don’s Boat Landing, situated to the south of the Henry community.
Over 40 teams participated in the competition, preparing various dishes belonging to three categories: fur, fin, and feather.

Louisiana Cattle Festival welcomes new royalty

On March 2 and March 3, the Louisiana Cattle Festival Association proudly welcomed a new group of royalty to reign over the 74th Louisiana Cattle Festival, scheduled for October of 2024.
The newly crowned kings and queens are tasked with promoting the Festival during their year-long reign in addition to representing the Festival Association, the state’s cattle industry, and the City of Abbeville and Vermilion Parish.

Gas leak causes Gueydan High to close for the day

GUEYDAN - School at Gueydan High ended early on Thursday because of a gas leak in front of the school near the football stadium.
Gueydan Mayor Jude Reece informed the high school about the leak and recommended the school close as a precaution.
Reece said the leak was discovered during a gas line inspection by the pipeline company. The gas line services gas to the concession at Gueydan football stadium.
The leak caused the gas to be turned off at Gueydan High.

The Chevy S-10 truck was loaded onto a trailer after being found in Leroy.

Kaplan man’s race truck stolen, then runs out of fuel, located in Leroy

KAPLAN — Devin Turner had a terrible start to his Saturday morning when he realized his 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was stolen from his workplace in Kaplan. However, things started looking up by 2 p.m. when his S-10 was found parked in a driveway on Leroy Road, north of Kaplan.
On that Saturday morning, Turner arrived at his workplace around 7:30 and was informed by a friend that his S-10 truck was not parked where it usually was.
After searching around the shop, they realized that it had been stolen. Turner subsequently reported the crime to the police.
