Abbeville man cited for alleged deer hunting violations

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two men for alleged deer hunting violations in Vermilion Parish on Sept. 1.
Agents cited Davin A. Miller, 18, of Abbeville, for hunting deer during a closed season, failing to tag deer, failing to validate deer, failing to comply with harvest card regulations, and hunting without basic hunting and deer hunting licenses. Agents also cited Ronald J. Menard, 25, of Kaplan, for possession of an illegally taken deer and an untagged deer.

Learning center in the north Vermilion area goes into lockdown due to shooting

On Wednesday, ‘Lil Bucks N Does’ Adventure and Learning Center went into lockdown just after 2 p.m. because a shooting occurred less than a half mile from the learning center.
The learning center is located on La. 92, west of Maurice.
By 2:20 p.m., La. 92 was blocked off by law enforcement, starting at La. 343.
At 3 p.m., parents could still not go to the learning center to pick up their children because the road was blocked.
No shooting details were available when the Meridional went to press at 4 p.m.

On a very hot day, some Kaplan residents lose electricity

On what could be the hottest day of the year in Vermilion Parish, some residents and businesses lost electricity on the west end of Kaplan.
By 3 p.m., the temperature climbed to 100 degrees on Monday.
Kaplan Mayor Mike Kloesel and the town were aware of the problem that morning, and by 10 a.m., crews from Abbeville, SLEMCO and Lafayette were in town trying to find the problem.
He addressed the heat and no electricity on the Mayor's Facebook Page.

Driver killed in head-on crash involving three vehicles in Vermilion Parish

Shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a three-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 89 near Lucien Road in Vermilion Parish. The crash claimed the life of 67-year-old Carroll Duhon of New Iberia.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by Carroll, was traveling north on LA 89. At the same time, a 2014 Ram and a 2022 Ford F350 were traveling south on LA 89. For reasons still under investigation, Carroll’s pickup crossed the center line and struck the southbound Ram pickup and Ford F350.

Montz’s family began day with hope & prayers

On Thursday, the family of Matt Montz, a missing crabber, arrived at the boat launch in Intracoastal City at 7 a.m. They came with the hope that Montz would be found alive.
By noon, however, that hope turned to despair when Matt’s body was discovered.
Lauren Montz, his daughter, posted on Facebook, “His body is at peace, and we are absolutely crushed. We appreciate all of the prayers. We know we will get through this.”
