Young Actors Guild to perform musical ‘Newsies’

The Young Actors Guild of Abbey Players presents this summer’s musical phenomenon, Newsies.
Set in New York City in 1899, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly (Grant Broussard), a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “Newsies.”
When publishers of the newspaper raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right. Their cause becomes even bigger than any of the newsies imagined when they realize they’re fighting for all the children working in unfair and unsafe conditions across the nation.
Based on the 1992 Disney motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.
There are 26 members in the cast.
The Young ActorsGuild Abbey Players released a quote as to why they wanted to do the musical play, Newsies.
“Newsies was chosen because the message of the show which is to stand firm in something you believe in is exactly how the Young Adult Guild of The Abbey Players was born. A few young adults had a dream to start a Young Adult Guild and Newsies is their first production.”
Director Cailin Trahan, assistant director Theresa Rudesill, musical director, Jacob Lange, and the rest of the cast and crew experience non-stop action and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.
Regular performances will be held four times each weekend for two weekends beginning Friday, Aug. 3. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7 pm sharp. The Saturday and Sunday afternoon matinee performances will be at 2 pm.
Tickets are available for $15 at abbeyplayers.com.
