Vermilion Charter Academy holds first public meeting

Close to 50 people attended the first Vermilion Charter Town Hall meeting held Thursday at the Woodman of the World Hall in Maurice.
In attendance were parents who wanted to send their children to Vermilion Charter Academy, a new charter school about to be built in the northern part of the parish.
The school will be known as Vermilion Charter Academy, and the bulldog will be its mascot.
The K-through 8th grade school is scheduled to open in August of next year. The school can house 900 students. The goal is to have at least 100 students in each grade.

Pedestrian Killed on State Highway in Acadia Parish

ACADIA PARISH – At 9:30 p.m., on October 8, 2023, Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 95 near Louisiana Highway 754, south of Church Point in Acadia Parish. The crash claimed the life of 38-year-old Tyler O. Roberts of Rayne.
The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed Roberts was walking in the northbound lane of LA 95 when he was struck by a northbound 2017 Ford Escape.

Abbeville Police makes multiple arrests after weekend shooting

Four people have been booked after a shooting occurred at an Abbeville apartment complex Saturday afternoon.
That incident came less than a week after Roderick Guidry died as a result of gunshot wound near the same complex.
On Saturday, September 30, 2023, at approximately 12:29 p.m., The Abbeville Police Department received a call about a shooting at the Live Oak Manor Apartment Complex located at 1610 Martin Luther King Dr.

Body of Abbeville man found near Live Oak Apartments

The Abbeville Police Department is investigating a shooting near Live Oak Apartments in Abbeville.
On Monday evening, at approximately 9 p.m., the Abbeville Police Department received multiple calls about shots fired at Live Oak Manor Apartment Complex.
Vermilion 911 called the Abbeville Police Department to advise they received a call from someone named “Jamal” stating that someone was in the field with a gunshot wound east of Live Oak Manor Apartments.

Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office arrests one juvenile, charges others for ATV, motorcycle thefts

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, detectives have arrested a juvenile and charged several other juveniles (ranging between the ages of 15-17) over the recent thefts of off-road motorcycles and ATVs.
Detectives have completed an extensive investigation and sent case files to the District Attorney for prosecution.
The juvenile arrested has been transferred to the custody of the Office of Juvenile Justice.
