Kaplan Pirates rally to beat Grand Lake

LAKE CHARLES — The Kaplan High Pirates scored six runs in the sixth inning to overcome an early deficit on the way to a 9-5 win over Grand Lake on Tuesday.
The Hornets led 3-0 after one inning and 4-0 after three. Kaplan scored twice in the fourth to pull to within 4-2, then scored on an error and a fielder’s choice in the sixth to tie the score at 4-all with two out.
Sabe David was then hit by a pitch and R Broussard singled to load the bases for Hayes Mire, who singled up the middle to give Kaplan its first lead.
Landon Cheek walked to force in another run and Caden Campisi followed with a two-run base hit for an 8-4 Pirates lead.
David’s ground-out RBI in the seventh made it 9-4.
Mire went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Campisi was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Petry added a double with an RBI and a run and David singled with an RBI and a run.
Also contributing to Kaplan’s 10-hit attack were Remi Broussard, Cheek (1 RBI), Coy Terro (1 run) and Aiden Gaspard (1 run). Brett Guidry also scored a run for Kaplan.
Garrett Walker went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run for the Hornets and Connor Guillotte went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs.
Grand Lake committed six errors in the loss.
Petry pitched five innings for the win, allowing four hits, two earned, on five hits. He struck out seven batters and walked three. Campisi allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts and a walk in two innings.
Landen Fontenot took the loss in relief, surrendering six runs on five hits and a walk. Five of the runs were unearned.
Starter Gavin Walker allowed two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks in five inings. Tanner Benoit gave up one run on two hits with a strikeout in one inning.
