Emma Nicole Stelly is all smiles after winning.

Kaplan High graduate wins Farm Bureau crown

NEW ORLEANS - Twenty-four of Louisiana’s most poised and talented ladies representing various parishes competed for the coveted crown. Eager to represent the organization for the upcoming year, this year’s slate of contestants participated in multiple rounds of competition, which included both interviews and evening gown presentations.
The judges narrowed the twenty-four hopefuls down to the top ten finalists, who were invited to the stage to answer an on-stage question. Of the finalists, three ladies were ultimately selected, and Emma Nicole Stelly of Vermilion Parish was crowned the 2024 Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation Queen.
“I’m overly excited! Simply speechless,” Stelly conveyed when asked about how it feels to be crowned as the new queen. “As a fifth-generation farmer and a participant of the Farm Bureau Federation Conventions for over a decade, I am honored to continue advocating for the farmers of Louisiana.”
Emma is the 19-year-old daughter of Adlar and Natachia Stelly and a 2023 graduate of Kaplan High School. Emma was Kaplan High’s 2022 Student of the Year, class valedictorian, and a recipient of the Linda and Wayne Zaunbrecher scholarship for college.
She currently attends McNeese State University where she is majoring in Agricultural Science with a concentration in Agricultural Business and a minor in Mass Communications. Emma received the Rose and Charles internship opportunity with the LSU AgCenter. She will be working in plant pathology in the disease management program. Once Emma graduates, she hopes to pursue a career on her family farm where she can continue advocating for agriculture.
Representing the state’s largest general farm organization, Stelly will spend the next year serving as the face and voice of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation. During her reign, she will also have the opportunity to participate in various statewide festivals and events, along with a national appearance at the annual Mystick Krewe of Louisianians Mardi Gras Ball in Washington, D.C.
Chacelyn Audrey Peltier, of Iberia Parish, was named first runner-up in the contest. Second runner-up was Cesilee Oliver of Calcasieu Parish. The contestants also voted Lillian “Lily” Gail Westbrooks, of Caldwell Parish, Miss Congeniality.
The Louisiana Farm Bureau Queen’s Contest is sponsored by the Louisiana Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.
Founded in 1921, the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation is the state’s largest general farm organization representing more than 146,000 member families.

Jamie and her husband Aaron won the Louisiana Young Farmer’s Award. In the photo with them is their one year old son, “A J.”

Vermilion Parish couple named Louisiana’s Top Young Farmers

New Orleans—Aaron and Jamie Lee of Vermilion Parish have been named the 2024 Young Farmers and Ranchers Achievement Award Winners, the highest honor given by the Louisiana Farm Bureau to individual farmers each year.
The Lees won the award during the organization’s 102nd Annual Convention here at the Marriott on Canal St. last week during the Organizational Awards. The young couple are sixth-generation sugarcane, livestock, rice, and crawfish farmers who will now go on to compete for the national title in January 2025 at the American Farm Bureau convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Aaron Lee expressed pride in the win but credited his success to his family.
“Over the past several years, I have begun transitioning from my dad’s helper to the one making the management decisions,” Lee said. “I believe I have come a long way and I’m proud of the progress that I’ve made under my father’s guidance. He trusts me to make the decisions, but I still value his opinion and know that I can always go to him for advice.”
Lee said even though he and his wife come from different backgrounds, her support was essential to the Lees’ operation. Jamie is a schoolteacher, while Aaron grew up on the farm. However, Jamie Lee has utilized the Ag in the Classroom program, so the farm is never far from her job.
“I serve as the parish chairperson as well as a member of the state Ag in the Classroom committee,” Jamie Lee said. “My biggest role in advocating for agriculture is that of an Ag Teacher. Being a farm wife and ag teacher allows me to bring a personal message on why production agriculture is so important in today’s world. I’m able to bring stories, and sometimes even soil, from home to help my students gain an understanding of agriculture in their area.”
“I knew from a young age that I was passionate about the farm and wanted to stay and work on the farm that my father and grandfather ran,” Aaron Lee said. “I would wake up every morning and jump in my dad’s truck to go ride in the tractors.
“We both ended up double majoring at LSU,” he added. “Her in Animal Science and Ag Education and I in Animal Science and Ag Business. Our senior year, she was awarded the Outstanding Senior in the College of Agriculture.”
As winners of the 2024 YF&R Achievement Award, the Lees receive a prize package including a $35,000 cash prize credit toward the purchase of a truck, courtesy of the Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Co., a trip to the American Farm Bureau Convention in San Antonio, Texas in Jan. 2025, courtesy of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation, $250 courtesy of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation and $250 from the Louisiana Farm.

Eddie Langlinais was sworn in by Judge Jonathan Perry on Monday with his family by his side, including his mother, Virlie, who holds the Bible.

Judge Laurie Hulin swears in the new department heads for the Sheriff’s Office. They are (left to right) Blaire Doré (chief deputy), Glenn Landry patrol captain), Sammy LaPorte (warden of the parish jail), Mike Touchet (head of investigations) and Brooke Stelly, who is the captain of the civil division.  Sheriff Eddie Langlinais holds the Bible.

Eddie Langlinais sworn in as new Vermilion Parish Sheriff

The last time someone could say, “There is a new sheriff in Vermilion Parish,” was 20 years ago when Mike Couvillon took office — before Couvillon, another 20 years had passed since Ray Lemaire was sworn in.
For only the fourth time in 60 years, Vermilion Parish has a new sheriff: Eddie Langlinais from Delcambre.
On Monday, Langlinais was sworn in by Judge Jonathan Perry and Langlinais’s new department heads were sworn in by Judge Laurie Hulin.
At Black’s in Abbeville, Langlinais told the crowd that he had wanted to be the Sheriff of Vermilion Parish since high school. In 1979, he won the Sheriff position at Delcambre High School, but he lost the parish government day election.
In high school, Langlinais was brought by his mother, Verlie, to meet then-Vermilion Parish Sheriff Euda Delcambre, who was from Delcambre. Langlinais told the crowd that Sheriff Euda gave him words of encouragement, and at that moment, he knew he wanted to be sheriff. Langlinais began his journey to become the Sheriff in the parish at the age of 20, and started working in Iberia Parish.
Three years later, he was hired by Euda Delcambre in 1984.
He was also hired by the U.S. Marshal’s Office in 1991 and worked in New Orleans as a United States Marshal.
In 1994, he worked for the U.S. Marshal’s Office in Lafayette until he retired in 2019. After retiring, he joined the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office to lead the investigation department, with the intention of running for the Sheriff’s office in the future.
In 2020, a close friend, Chuck Landry, called him and changed the course of his life in a quick moment. Landry suggested to Langlinais that since Couvillon was not seeking reelection, he should consider running for Sheriff.
“It seemed like my stars had finally aligned, and my opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream had arrived,” Sheriff Langlinais told the crowd at the swearing-in. “It took a lot of hard work and determination to get to where I am today.”
Langlinais thanked former Sheriff Mike Couvillon for helping with the transition, and he also thanked his campaign staff, who helped him with his election over the last three years, as well as the Vermilion Parish voters.
“Thank you to all of the hard-working, honest people of Vermilion Parish. Thank you for having faith, believing in me, and entrusting me as your Sheriff.”
He wanted to express his gratitude to his mother, Virlie, and his father, the late Noicy Langlinais.
“I want to thank them for their guidance and support and for making me the man I am today.”
The final person he thanked was his wife, Lyndi, who was by his side, knocking on doors in 100-degree weather, and attending every function.
“She helped guide me through a three-year experience we will never forget. She was my campaign secretary, my campaign finance clerk, and organizer.
“Most of all, she was my partner, best friend, and wife.”

Jackie and Douglas Vincent are the 2024 Grand Marshals of the Fourth of July parade on Thursday.

Vincents grand marshals of Erath Fourth of July Parade on Thursday

ERATH - Erath’s longtime residents, Jackie and Douglas Vincent, have been named the 2024 Grand Marshals of the 88th annual 4th of July Celebration.
They will reign over the grand parade that will roll through the streets of Erath on July 4th at 5 p.m.
The Erath 4th of July Celebration takes place in the heart of Erath at the intersection of North Broadway and East and West Edward Streets. It includes live music, vendor booths, and carnival rides. Unlike other “street fairs,” all the activities take place right on the pavement itself without any encircling fences or gates. As a result, there are no entrance fees for attendees to pay.
The Vincents moved to Erath in 1976, marking the 200th anniversary of America’s independence. The young married couple of four years began their life in a town that had a long tradition of commemorating USA Independence Day ever since 1936.
Children tend to follow their parents’ lead and get involved in similar activities. In the case of the Vincents, it was the other way around. Their son Robert became the 4th of July Association’s youngest member in 1995 and served for an unprecedented 17years before resigning in 2019 due to health reasons.
Robert was honored to serve as Erath’s 2015 Grand Marshal. It was his contagious enthusiasm that inspired them to join the association in 2003. Nine years later, Douglas and Jackie are proud to follow in their son’s footsteps as 2024 Grand Marshals.
Douglas,a longtime vendor volunteer, grew up on a farm south of Erath.
The fields of Henry were his playground. One of Doug’s many duties for the festival is to skillfully carve out a space for the vendor booths on East and West Edward Streets. Tensions sometimes run high among vendors as they each strive to occupy prime real estate for their booths.
Through the years, experienced vendors have depended on Douglas and his reliable old tractor to assist them. In addition, he relocates the stage and beer booth on the festival grounds for the next five nights which is an important task for the big event.
Jackie Vincent, a native of Rayne, cultivated her talent for art by studying at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette and the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1999, she became active in community service as chairperson of Erath’s Centennial Committee, encouraged by her son Robert, then the 19-year-old Mayor Pro-Tem.
Her role included organizing residents, artists, and students for a year’s worth of centennial events. During the centennial, Jackie and other artists created wall murals for City Hall and the old Boudreaux-Gary Hardware Store, some of which still adorn Erath City Hall and the town’s Electrical building. She also designed Erath’s 1999 Centennial Pin, which evolved into the 4th of July pin and logo still used today.
In 2005, Jackie became the first “t-shirt chairperson,” utilizing her artistic skills to design t-shirts for 13 years before stepping down in 2018.
In 2020, after the death of her beloved son Robert, she carried on his duties on the town council. She fulfilled his request of recognizing the eight heroes of Hurricane Hilda by placing a plaque on the site where they died.
During the 1964 storm, the water tower fell on the building while they were protecting the town. She is an active docent at the Acadian Museum. She said, “I always like being involved in my community. It brings me great joy to help make Erath a better place to live.”
Jackie and Douglas are the parents of two sons. Their eldest, Joseph is the husband of Heather. Their youngest, Robert B. Vincent, died in 2020 due to complications from Muscular Dystrophy.

Dani-Ryan Andrus

Mar 7, 2024 - Jun 24, 2024

KAPLAN — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Dani-Ryan, who brought immense joy and love during her short but impactful time with us. Born prematurely on March 7, 2024, at 33 weeks and 2 days, Dani-Ryan defied the odds from the very beginning. Her mother courageously battled preeclampsia, spending 20 challenging days in the hospital to ensure her safe arrival.
Dani-Ryan spent her first 6 weeks in the NICU, where she exhibited a strength and resilience that inspired everyone around her. Her family is so grateful for the love and care provided to them by the Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center Labor and Delivery and NICU staff throughout their time in the hospital. Emerging healthy and vibrant after her time there, Dani-Ryan’s radiant smiles and joyful spirit touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Throughout her short time on earth, she knew the deepest, purest love from her parents, grandparents, and extended family. She was doted on and cared for, and she returned that love so preciously.
Tragically, Dani-Ryan was taken from us far too soon on June 24, 2024. Her unexpected departure leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts, but her memory will forever be cherished.
Dani-Ryan’s family will eternally remember her strength, her smiles, and the profound love she brought into their lives. While her time with us was brief, her impact was immeasurable, and she will always be remembered as our little warrior.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 28, 2024 at St. Anne Catholic Church honoring her life. She will be laid to rest at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery with Father "Su" Suresh Mathangi officiating the services.
Visiting hours will be observed at Vincent Funeral Home in Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Ave., on Friday, June 28, 2024 from 9 a.m. until the procession departs for the church at 2:30 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 11 a.m.
She is survived by her loving parents, Jacob Ryan Andrus and Markie Suire Andrus; her grandparents, John and Becky Andrus, Charles H. and Nickie P. Toups, Randy and Toni Bouillion, and Mark and Lori Suire; Godparents, Joshua Andrus (Pamela), and Donnie Broussard (Randy); uncles and aunts, Jarrod Andrus (Christine), Charles Rene' Toups (Mary Hannah), Lane Toups, Cecily Suire Hebert (Johnny), Zach Suire, and Christopher Suire; cousins, Ridge Andrus, Jett Andrus, Mason Andrus, Emma Andrus, Luke Andrus, Keelan Duncan, Jayce Hebert, and Caroline Hebert; her great-grandparents, Delores Andrus, Danny and Margaret Prejean, and Nancy Toups; and many other beloved family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Peterman and Netta Bourque, Paul Andrus, Wiltz Toups, Jr., and Hubert and Belle Suire; her cousin, Jaicee Hebert; and her great-parrain Kevin Suire.
Rest in peace, sweet Dani-Ryan. You will forever be in our hearts.
