Cleco donates $20,000 to establish endowed scholarship for Power Lineman and Electrical programs at SLCC

PINEVILLE, La. – March 23, 2021 – Today, Cleco made a $20,000 donation to South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) to establish an endowed scholarship for the college’s Power Lineman and Electrical programs.
The Cleco endowed scholarship will be used to recruit, retain and train students enrolled in these training programs. In 2018, Cleco contributed $50,000 to SLCC to help establish the Power Lineman program which recently celebrated the graduation of its fourth class.
“This additional funding is part of our commitment to not only invest in the communities we serve but to help sustain workforce training programs for future generations,” said Bill Fontenot, president and CEO of Cleco Corporate Holdings. “Endowed scholarships differ from traditional scholarships because the money donated is never actually spent. Rather, the money is invested, and the investment income is used to fund scholarships which provide more permanent support.”
“The generosity of partners like Cleco help us train the workforce and meet workforce needs across Acadiana and Louisiana," said Dr. Jermaine Ford, SLCC’s vice president of Economic and Workforce Development at SLCC. "Our Power Lineman program puts technicians right to work after graduation, and we are grateful for our partners like Cleco who make this possible."
“The Louisiana Board of Regents provides a competitive 100 percent match on private scholarship donations, so the total endowed scholarship will be $40,000 which means SLCC will be able to award scholarships for years to come thanks to this donation from Cleco,” said Lana Fontenot, SLCC’s vice chancellor of Institutional Advancement.
When awarding scholarships, priority will be given to females and minorities due to their low enrollment in energy education programs.
Cleco Corporate Holdings LLC is a regional energy holding company that conducts its business operations through its subsidiaries, Cleco Power LLC and Cleco Cajun LLC. Cleco Power is a regulated electric public utility company that owns 10 generating units with a rated capacity of 3,360 MWs and serves approximately 290,000 customers in Louisiana through its retail business and supplies wholesale power in Louisiana and Mississippi. Vermilion Parish School Board still wants nine-member board

The Vermilion Parish School Board hired demographer Mike Hefner to begin figuring out how to create nine school board districts.
The school board voted at least two years ago to go from an eight-board to a nine-board because of the population’s rise in the northern part of the parish.
When the board voted to go to nine districts, they also decided to wait until the 2020 census was completed to get accurate population numbers.
Typically, by now, Hefner would have the 2020 census numbers of the population in Vermilion Parish. But due to of COVID-19, getting census results have been pushed back by at least six months, explained Hefner.
“I was hoping to get data in August, but because of COVID, the Census data has been extended into 2021. Until the census data is released, I can not do anything.”
The original game plan was to have the new 2020 census population numbers by April and then begin drawing new lines and then having public meetings to let the public go over the new district lines at public meetings.
Everything needed to be approved and finalized before qualifying begins in July of 2022 for the November school board election in 2022. Vermilion Parish voters would be voting for school board members for nine districts in 2022.
But with the new census data being pushed back at least six months, Hefner could not give a definite date on when the new district lines would be drawn. There is also a chance that when the 2022 school board election rolls around, the new nine school board districts may not be completed in time for the election.
