Abbeville's Luther Winch: Cajun Cowboy turns into a Texas Rancher

The Abbeville Meridional sat with Abbeville native Luther Winch to learn about his ranch and cattle business in Montgomery, Texas (50 miles northwest of Houston).
Winch, 61, has been married to Therese Broussard Winch since 1990, and they have two sons. Luther L Winch, IV. “Luke” is 28 years old and helps manage the ranch businesses. Rome Benjamin Winch is 25 years old. The Winches own and operate WINCH Ranch.

21 year old reaches speeds of 120 mph on his motorcycle; charged by Abbeville police

Davin Devillier, 21, from Sunset, La., was arrested by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through two parishes.
Devillier was charged with one count of aggravated flight of a motorcycle, and the Maurice Police Department added charges. His bond was set at $30,000, and on Monday, he was no longer in the parish jail.

Vermilion Parish School Board looks to make supply list cheaper

Most parents hate the start of school because they know it is time to purchase items on the supply list that teachers provide them. When the shopping is over, a parent can spend anywhere from $30 to $114 on school supplies.
Over the years, parents have complained to school board members about the extra expense of starting school. Their complaints include buying five boxes of crayons instead of one or six boxes of Kleenex when their child only needs one. The extra supplies drove up the cost.

$21 million contract awarded to deepen Vermilion Parish's Freshwater Bayou to the Gulf of Mexico

Vermilion Parish is finally set to benefit from the Acadiana Gulf of Mexico Access Channel (AGMAC), more than two decades after it was first discussed.
A contract has been awarded to begin deepening the navigational channel for a 20-mile stretch from the intersection of the Intracoastal Canal down Freshwater Bayou to the Freshwater Bayou Locks.
The dredging will increase the depth of Freshwater Bayou, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico, to just over 16 feet deep.
The spoil from the dredging will be placed in the marsh near the dredging.

Road rage captured on video in Abbeville

A charity event for the Special Olympics in Vermilion Parish, organized by a poker and jeep run, is getting a lot of buzz due to a scuffle between a biker and a motorist in Abbeville.
On Saturday morning, over 70 motorcycles and jeeps took off from Kaplan and drove east on Hwy. 14 for a poker run event. During a poker run, each player receives five playing cards to play a classic poker game.
