Improvements being made in downtown Abbeville; work expected to be completed later this year

There are signs in numerous spots in downtown Abbeville.
Those signs are alerting people to some work that has been years in the making.
“The long-waited streetscape grant is now underway,” Councilman Brady Broussard Jr. said.
The beautification project that will improve sidewalks, add multiple handicap accessibility points and make other improvements is being largely funded by a $450,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
Work began Monday. Glenn Lege Construction is handling the work. Completion is expected in 270 work days, weather permitting.
“The contractor Glenn Lege Construction has assured city officials they will make every effort to accommodate businesses and their customers during the construction,” Broussard said.
“We ask all citizens driving in the construction area to please proceed slowly and carefully where workers will be present.”
Construction began at the corner of Pere Megret Street at South Main Street.
“The city has requested that each area be completed before beginning construction in other areas of this project,” Broussard explained. “That will keep construction to a limited area at all times during this project.”
The project will certainly bring an updated look to the area.
“Citizens can expect to see utility lines buried, new lighting, landscaping and beautification as this project moves toward completion later this calendar year,” Broussard said.
Broussard encouraged people to support the businesses that are part of downtown, both during the work and after.
“I’d urge not only now and during the beautification project,” Broussard said, “but please support our downtown merchants where free parking is always plentiful.”
