Billy Broadhurst, adviser to Edwin Edwards, dies

Billy Broadhurst, an adviser to Edwin Edwards and countless other elected officials across the state, has died, according to several people who knew him. He was 77.

Broadhurst was a lawyer who rose to prominence as a political operative working with a wide range of officials and a lobbyist for some of the most powerful interests in the state.

Broadhurst had been actively working on politics up until this past weekend, when he was in New Orleans meeting with officials and potential clients.

Details about Broadhurst's death were not immediately available.

Vidallier goes out in style at LSUE

Hannah Vidallier’s softball career ended like she had hoped.
In her two years at LSU-Eunice, she leaves with two Division II Junior College National Championships.
The LSU-Eunice Lady Bengals won their fifth national championship with a dramatic 8-7 win over top-ranked Jones County Junior College, Saturday at Traceway Park.
Vidallier, a North Vermilion High graduate, pitched the final three innings in the finals. She gave up one run, two hits, and walking one.

National Guard armory in need of more land to expand in Abbeville

The National Guard Armory in Abbeville is in need of more land to expand, so it went to the Vermilion Parish School Board to possibly lease land north of Abbeville.
Homer Stelly, a retired command sergeant major for the National Guard, attended last week’s school board meeting representing the National Guard. He informed the school board that the National Guard is in need of 15 acres to build a “readiness center.”
The National Guard located 15 acres of school board owned land on La. 338, near the Magnolia Water Plant.

New director brings new excitement to SLCC Gulf Area Campus in City

There is a new wave of excitement at the SLCC’s Gulf Area Campus in Abbeville.
That excitement has been created by campus director Tawana Stokes. Stokes, who just completed her first year in Abbeville, is ready to begin her second year as the campus director.
“I love being here,” said Stokes, who spoke at the Abbeville Kiwanis Club on Tuesday. “I am so passionate towards my students.”
