Judge rules Darnell Huntley can go before state parole board; he also apologizes to victim’s daughter for murder

Darnell Huntley of Abbeville had a good day on Jan. 31, 2019.
In a matter of 10 minutes, Huntley received forgiveness from the daughter of the lady he murdered in 1980, and he also learned he would go before the State Parole Board in hopes of one day getting out of jail.
Huntley, who murdered a 66-year-old Abbeville woman during an armed robbery in 1980, attended his resentencing hearing Thursday in the Vermilion Parish Courthouse.
Judge Jules Edwards ruled Huntley, who has been in prison since 1980, gets to have a parole hearing shortly.

North Vermilion's Lange named top High School Student in Vermilion Parish

LEROY — Aubree Lange was in for quite the surprise when her parents, the Superintendents and Principals interrupted her Biology class one morning. “Everyone just showed up, it took me a second to realize what was happening,” Lange said.
The 4.0 student was named Parish Student of the Year and not only represents North Vermilion High School, but Vermilion Parish High Schools as a whole. Lange has held her 4.0 GPA since Elementary school.

Sheriff issues warning about scam involving cashiers checks

Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon ask residents to be aware of a recent scam circulating in Vermilion Parish in the form of a cashier’s check from SAFE Credit Union.
SAFE Credit Union is a reputable business and is not a part of this scam but rather a victim of criminals attempting to take advantage of their business name utilizing fictitious checks, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
If you receive a cashier’s check from this institution and have not had any prior dealing with them you can be rest assured it is a scam.

Students from Vermilion on McNeese State President’s list, honor roll

The President’s Honor List for the fall 2018 semester at McNeese State University has been announced. To be on the President’s Honor List, an undergraduate student must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average or better while carrying at least 15 semester hours. A senior eligible for graduation but carrying less than 15 hours is also provided that student was on the President’s Honor List the previous semester.
