Ville Platte man accused of beating elderly disabled veteran

OPELOUSAS — A 29-year-old Ville Platte man has been arrested and accused of striking an elderly disabled veteran with a tire iron at a Nuba gas station on Valentine’s Day.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said Kenneth Paul Shergold, of the 200 block of Freddie Dunn Road, Ville Platte, was charged on Wednesday with one count of simple battery to the infirm and one count of aggravated second-degree battery.

Vanslyke arrested after Abbeville Police respond to Armed Robbery call

On Wednesday at 4:34 p.m., officers of the Abbeville Police Department responded to an armed robbery call at a residence on Maude Avenue.
Officers spoke to the victim, who stated that he gave an individual known as Joshua Vanslyke a ride to his residence on Messina Street.
The victim stated that they both went into Vanslyke’s residence under the premise that Vanslyke was going to get gas money to repay the victim for the ride.

For years, the old post office building has sat empty. It is owned by the Vermilion Parish School Board.

What to do with building?

The appraisal for the old Abbeville post office building was completed and it states the downtown building holds a $250,000 price tag. The next question is, “What to do with the building?”
School Board members were in different corners on whether to keep the building for proper use or sell the building for good profit. The building was given to the School Board by the Broussard family in Abbeville. It has sat empty for years.
School Board attorney Kathy Boudreaux presented information about the sale of the building and a timeline on when it should happen.

Kaplan High’s Renfrow named Kiwanis Student of the Month

When Reed Renfrow sets a goal for himself, don’t bet against him working hard to achieve that goal.
Renfrow, now a senior at Kaplan High, fell in love with Baylor University as a middle school student. He would wear hooded sweatshirts with the logo of the Waco, Texas school.
“People would tell me that I could never get in,” Renfrow said.
He did.

Links Des Pink looking to grow

On Tuesday, February 19, Links Des Pink Cancer Organization will hold an open house at the Vermilion Parish Library in hopes of gaining new volunteers as well as donations.
Founded in 2007, the Links des Pink Cancer Organization became the very first non-profit cancer awareness and support organization in Vermilion Parish. The organization began with only a few dedicated individuals who united with one another for a better cause; to help those going through cancer and organizations trying to stop cancer.
