Gulf Coast Bank, local Marine Corps League partner to provide SLCC Scholarship to deserving Vermilion Parish Student

One full-time, high-achieving high school graduate from Vermilion Parish will get help with college costs thanks to the Lt. Dronet Detachment Marine Corps League and Gulf Coast Bank Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1,000 with installments of $500 per semester to a student attending South Louisiana Community College’s Gulf Area Campus.

Nguyen wins ‘What I want to be and why’ essay contest

The American Legion held a meeting to honor the winner of the ‘What I Want to Be and Why’ essay competition. This year’s award went to Henry Nguyen, a student from Vermilion Catholic.
Presenting the award is Thomas Thompson, President of the American Legion Post 29; along with Garolyn Landry and principal of VC, Michael Guilbeaux.
The award was a beautiful plaque and a $1,000 scholarship check.

Three St. Martinville residents killed in head-on collision

ST. MARTIN PARISH – Shortly before 6:30 am on May 18, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 96 near Capritto 40 Arpent Road in St. Martin Parish.
The crash claimed the lives of 18-year-old Kenneth J. Eaglin II, 18-year-old Dajanee Oliver, and, 37- year-old Latricia L. Savoy, all of St. Martinville.

Abbeville Council looking to ban smoking inside bars, bingo halls

On Jan. 1, 2015, the City of Abbeville went smoke free in public places.
Well, in most public places. Bars and bingo halls remained exempt from the smoke-free ordinance passed by the Abbeville City Council.
However, the cloud that advocates say is hanging over a completely smoke-free, healthier Abbeville may soon dissipate.
During an ordinance committee meeting Tuesday evening, the Council voted to amend the previously installed smoking ban to include bars and bingo halls.

LAFAYETTE — When it comes to economic development and overall growth in Acadiana, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette plays a pivotal role.
It makes sense, then, that One Acadiana, an economic development organization focused on the betterment of the area, would bring the University’s leader together with its members to offer some insight into what makes it all work.
One Acadiana welcomed UL Lafaytte President Dr. Joseph Savoie Tuesday morning during its latest installment of Lessons from the Corner Office. The series allows members to hear from local leaders.
