Abbeville High football coach leaves to accept North Vermilion head football job

Coach Roderick Moy ready to turn Patriots around in football

Roderick Moy, who spent four years in building Abbeville High School’s football team into a powerhouse, is now set to take on a new challenge.
He aims to replicate his success at North Vermilion High School, where he was recently named the new head football coach. After interviewing last Friday, he was offered and accepted the position.
The search began for a new NVHS head football coach when Joe Heintz stepped down in April. Heintz is returning to Teurlings High School after only one year at North Vermilion.
Moy had his eyes set on transferring from Abbeville High to either Sterlington High or North Vermilion High School. He graduated Sterlington High School and a few years later, started his teaching career at North Vermilion.
With three children living in Vermilion Parish, he knew it would be tough to leave his kids to coach at Sterlington High School one day.
“I always said those two high schools were the only schools I would leave Abbeville High,” said Moy on Monday. “The last seven years have prepared me to take this job. That is the job I have always wanted. It is considered home.”
Coach Moy said he wants to coach at a high school where he expects his daughters to attend simultaneously.
“I never want to be coaching at a high school and my daughters will be cheering on a Friday night at another high school. I want to be near them. I have to put them first.”
Moy has coached at North Vermilion for seven years. He was the girls’ basketball coach from 2005 through 2009. He left the parish and then returned and became the offensive coordinator under then-head football coach Richard Prejean. He was there from 2014 to 2017.
He left North Vermilion in 2017 to become the head football coach at Gueydan High School, where he turned the program around in three years. From Gueydan, he went to Abbeville High and has been there for four years.
In four years, he won a district title this past football season, been to the playoffs and won at least a first-round playoff game all four years. His teams have also won three Russo Trophies against Kaplan High.
At AHS, he has compiled an overall record of 29-12.
Moy did not keep the idea of him applying a secret to the AHS players. He told them the day he applied for the job.
Moy joins former AHS volleyball and head basketball coach Ashly Boudreaux at North Vermilion. NVHS hired Boudreaux as the new volleyball coach.
The AHS head football coaching job became open on Monday.
Also, former Kaplan head football coach Cory Brodie, who has been at Abbeville High for the last few months, is leaving Vermilion Parish when school ends.
Brodie will be moving to Mandeville to accept an assistant football job at Lakeshore High School, where  Brent Indest is the head football coach.

NOTE: Moy becomes only the second person to become the head football coach at three different parish schools.
He has been the head football coach at Gueydan High, Abbeville High and now North Vermilion High School.
He joins Kevin Kern who was the interim head coach at VC in 2004 for four games, then he became Abbeville High’s head coach before Moy, and he is now the head football coach at Gueydan High.

Abbeville teen went into church to allegedly scare parishioners, get his girlfriend, then head to Texas

Abbeville Police Chief said he did not think he was there to harm anyone

Abbeville Police Mike Hardy stated that the 16-year-old who was apprehended for bringing a gun into St. Mary Magdalen Church during a Holy Communion Mass did not have any intentions of harming anyone.
Hardy was quoted in the Advocate newspaper saying the teen told police that his girlfriend was inside the church. He planned to intimidate parishioners before he ran away with his girlfriend to Texas, reported the Advocate.
The teen was not allowed to carry out his plan, thanks to a handful of parishioners who were outside of the church and saw the teen enter the church.
The incident occurred Saturday morning during Mass. A parishioner, who was outside on the church grounds, allegedly saw the teen place a rifle against the outside wall of the church and then open the door of the church and possibly enter.
Another person outside of the church also saw the rifle and went to grab it and left with it before the teen could return for it. The teen came back outside, his gun was gone, and another parishioner grabbed him.
The police were called and, within minutes,  were at the church, along with the Vermilion Parish SWAT Team.
The Abbeville Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office swept the inside and outside of the church and determined there was no additional threat to the church.
The city police escorted the 16-year-old to the Abbeville Police Department and questioned with a parent present.  He was booked with terrorizing and two counts of possession of a firearm by a juvenile and also was transported to the Abbeville Hospital Behavioral Health Unit for a medical evaluation.
The Diocese of Lafayette released a statement over the weekend.
“We are thankful to God that a tragedy was avoided at the First Communion mass for the children of St. Mary Magdalen in Abbeville. The quick response of the Abbeville Police Department and alert to the parishioners is a great example of the most vulnerable in our community.  Let us pray for an end to all threats of violence to innocent human life.”
Abbeville Police Chief Mike Hardy thanked FBI Special Agent Daren Kelly, Special Agent Paul Sellers and Supervisory Senior Regional Resident Agent Doug Herman for their help in the investigation and deputies with the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office who helped clear the church.
Abbeville Mayor Roslyn White released a statement about Saturday.
Today (Saturday), we were reminded of how special and resilient our community is,” Mayor White said. “Our prayers remain with St Mary Magdalen Church, the clergy, administrative staff and all the families attending the Mass. We are incredibly thankful to the brave, diligent individuals who kept our community safe under threat and the officers who remained focused under unimaginably stressful circumstances. We ask for prayers as our community recovers from this event, and most importantly, we thank God.”

Arrest made after incident Saturday morning at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church

St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church released information regarding an incident that occurred Saturday morning. More information will be provided when it becomes available.

Below is a the message released by the church:

Dear Parishioners,

This morning, our First Communion ceremony was interrupted when a suspicious person opened the back door. The individual was immediately confronted by parishioners, escorted outside and the police were called. The individual was quickly apprehended by Abbeville Police Department and is in their custody. Once apprehended, law enforcement entered the church to make sure there was no additional danger. This understandably caused panic. While we realize this was a frightening experience for those in attendance, we are incredibly grateful to both parishioners and police officers for acting quickly to ensure the safety of all. Chief Mike Hardy is handling the investigation with cooperation of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s office and assistance from the FBI. Out of an abundance of caution, we will have uniformed law enforcement at all upcoming Masses. We invite First Communicants to receive First Holy Communion at whichever Mass they choose to attend this weekend. We are grateful for all the prayers for our St. Mary Magdalen community.

Right fielder Colton Jeansonne catches one of his two outs that he made on Wednesday.

Stingy defense helps North Vermilion reach finals

SULPHUR – The No. 6 North Vermilion Patriots used a stingy defense to defeat the No. 10 Pearl River Rebels 6-1 in the Division II Non-Select semifinals Wednesday night at McMurry Park.
While pitcher Isaac Russell dominated on the mound, only four of the 21 outs recorded were by strikeout.  That means he pitched to contact, trusting his defense to work behind him.
Shortstop Colt Lejeune led the effort with seven putouts.
“We’re just trying to back up our pitcher as best we can,” Lejeune said.  “We know he will give us his best shot to win the game.  We’re just trying to pick up our pitcher on defense and offense.”
In the fourth inning, Lejeune had three consecutive pitches hit hard and right at him.  He caught the first one.  The second one took a bad hop and caught him on the wrist.  He managed to field the third one clean, but his throw sailed.
Even when things don’t go as planned, the Patriots rely on each other to pick up the slack and get the job done.
“I didn’t get down on myself,” Lejeune said. “I knew my teammates had me, and  Isaac had me on the mound. I just had to keep my head up and keep pushing.”
Following the miscues, Russell struck out the next batter for the second out.  He then induced a pop-up to Devin Blanchard at second base to escape the inning unscathed.
Russell helped himself by recording six outs, four via strikeout and two by fielding his position. Blanchard recorded four outs at second, while Jansen Deangelo and Colton Jeansonne each caught two fly balls in the outfield.
Lejeune also contributed on offense. His single to left in the third drove in two runs to give the Patriots a commanding 5-0 lead. Jeansonne, Blanchard, and Hunter Denais each had an RBI, while Deangelo, Cody Breaux, and Blaze Duhon each had a hit.
The Patriots (23-13) play No.1 Lutcher on Saturday at 2 o’clock.  The Bulldogs defeated No.12 Iowa 5-0 in their semifinal matchup.  Whatever the result in the final, NV skipper Jeremy Trahan is proud of his squad.
“This is their opportunity, and they’re trying to seize it,” Trahan said.  “No matter what happens on Saturday, these guys are winners.”

Isaac Russell did not allow an earned run against Pearl River on Wednesday.

North Vermilion's Russell was cool as a cucumber in the state semifinals

SULPHUR - Isaac Russell did not let the idea of pitching in his first-ever semifinal state championship game bother him. He was as cool as a cucumber for seven innings on Wednesday night.
Russell was the winning pitcher in the 6-1 win over Pearl River Rebels in the semifinals.
He faced 30 batters and threw 106 strikes and 30 balls.
Russell struck out four, allowed five hits, and scored not one earned run.  Before the semifinal game, Russell had an impressive 1.48 earned run average (ERA). That ERA is now 1.31.
He now improves to 6-2 on the year.
“I think I did well,” said Russell. "I did not get nervous. I came into the game and acted like it was a regular-season game, even though I knew it was an important game. I felt good.”
NV head coach Jeremy Trahan said, “ Isaac had an unbelievable performance. He commanded the zone all night long.”
Russell’s first batter he faced in the game, he threw two consecutive balls and then fired a strike.  That batter grounded out for the first out of the game.
Russell struck out the next batter looking and got the third batter to ground out to end the inning.
He gave up his first hit to the sixth batter he faced, but that batter was left stranded on first base.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
“With the 1-0 lead, I knew we would keep going.   I know we are ahead, but I also knew we would score more runs,” Russell said.
In the third inning, the Patriots exploded for four runs.  Russell started the fourth inning with a 5-0 lead.
The junior pitcher did not change a thing despite having the big lead.
“I stay the same. I know the game could change in a split second,” he added.  “I never felt relaxed until the final out.”
The Patriots went into the top of the seventh inning with a comfortable 6-0 lead.  They were three outs away from advancing to their third state finals in four years.
Pearl River did not make the final three outs easy. An NV error let the leadoff batter get on base for Pearl River. The next batter grounded out to Russell, but a runner advanced to second base.
The second out occurred when NV shortstop Colt Lejeune  caught a line drive.
The Patriots were one out away from winning.
Then something happened that had not happened all game. Russell gave up back-to-back singles, allowing a run to score.
The right-hander did not panic. With two runners on base, he threw a fastball that was hit to center field. Center fielder Jansen Deangelo charged the ball and made a diving catch for the third out, ending the game.
“I saw Jansen go for it and realized it looked like he would catch it. When he did, it felt really good,” Russell said.
And Russell was also finally able to relax.

North Vermilion advances to state baseball finals

The Patriots beat Pearl River 6-1

SULPHUR — The No. 6 North Vermilion Patriots advanced to the finals of the Division II Non-Select playoffs with a 6-1 semifinal victory over the No. 10 Pearl River Rebels Wednesday night.
“We came out ready to go,” said NV skipper Jeremy Trahan.  Don’t doubt these guys.  If you give them a little opportunity to get something done, they’re going to do it.”
The Patriots (23-13) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Devin Blanchard singled to rightfield, plating Hunter Denais.
North Vermilion struck again in the third, adding four more runs to its lead.
Colt Lejeune had the big hit in the inning, driving in two runs with a line drive single to leftfield.
The Patriots added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Ben Carter stole home to make it 6-0.
Isaac Russell got the win on the hill to improve to 6-2 on the season.  He pitched all seven innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits and one walk while striking out four.
Brody Lambeck had two hits to lead the Patriots at the dish.  Lejeune had one hit and two RBI while Blanchard had one hit and one RBI.  Colton Jeansonne and Denais each had an RBI.
NV plays No. 1 Lutcher on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the finals.
“We’re not going to hit home runs or light up the radar gun,” Trahan said.  “But we’re a darn good baseball team.”
