Anne-Catherin Gallet Mathews is the new VC girls basketball coach. She graduated from the school in 2019 where she also played for Kim Guidry.

Vermilion Catholic announces Anne-Catherine Gallet Mathews is new girls basketball coach

Former VC player replaces Kim Guidry who retired this season

Vermilion Catholic has announced that 24-year-old Anne-Catherine Gallet Mathews will be the new head coach of the girls’ basketball team.
Mathews played for Kim Guidry from 2015 to 2019.
Before accepting the position, Mathews has been coaching at Acadiana Renaissance  Charter Academy in Youngsville for the last two years. She was the girl’s assistant basketball coach and the head tennis coach.
Mathews is the daughter of VC assistant coach and former player Angela Dubois Gallet.  Gallet and Hollie Nelms Trahan will remain as the assistant coaches.
When Mathews got into coaching, it was a dream to return to Vermilion Catholic and take over the basketball program.  But that dream of going back was down the line and not this soon.
That changed when Coach Kim Guidry called her and asked if she would be interested in taking over the program.
“It never dawned on me that it would happen when I was this young,” said Mathews.
After getting off the phone with Coach Kim, the first person she told was her mom.
Mathews was uncertain about taking over the program because she had recently given birth to twins. She worried about balancing her family responsibilities with her duties as head basketball coach.
After discussing it with her husband and parents, she accepted the position.
Mathews said she is not worried about filling Guidry’s shoes.
“I am not worried because Gidge has taught me well,” said Mathews.  “My goal is to continue her legacy and create my own while keeping the Lady Eagle program the same.”
Coach Guidry said, “Hiring her is great for the program.  I could not be more excited. She was my first choice. I am excited she will keep the program going.”
Guidry has been the head coach at VC for 39 years.
From 1985-2025, Guidry won 936 games, made nine Sweet 16 appearances, finished state runner-up twice, and won two state championships.

North Vermilion graduate Lexi Broussard hits grand slam for LCU

It was her first college home run

The Louisiana Christian University softball program may have been celebrating Senior Day over the weekend, but it was a junior who kick-started the comeback with an offensive performance of a lifetime as the Cats picked up another massive conference win in a 10-2 rout of Xavier (Louisiana) in game two Sunday afternoon.
Lexi Broussard, who picked the most opportune time for her first career home run, unloading the bases for the team’s first grand slam since the 2023 RRAC Tournament en route to a personal-record five-RBI, 3-for-3 nightcap in which she drove in all of her ribbies in the opening two frames on top of scoring twice and stealing a bag.
The North Vermilion graduate now has a .310 batting average in 100 at bats. She also has 19 RBI on the year
Against Texas State, she went four-for-four at the plate and knocked in three runs and scored three runs that game.
In Saturday’s game, LCU flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 6-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a grand slam to left field by Broussard that drove in four.

Miah is a senior and she was honored on Senior Day.

Seth Leger pitched in Erath's win over ED White.

Leger helps Erath beat ED White

ERATH – The No. 3 Erath Bobcats defeated the Select Division II No. 8-ranked ED White Cardinals 7-3 Saturday at Ross Granger Field to earn their 11th-straight victory.
The Bobcats (18-8) haven’t lost since March 7 when they fell to St. Thomas More. As his team prepares for its final four games and a playoff run, head coach Jeremy Picard likes what he sees.
“I like where we’re going,” Picard said. “We’re starting to swing the bat at the right time. We have some things to clean up defensively, but we’re headed in the right direction. We have four more hard baseball games. That’s why we do it, to prepare us for the playoffs.”
Seth Leger led the way for Erath on the mound and at the dish. The senior hurler threw a complete game to earn the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. At the plate, he had two hits and an RBI.
“That’s Seth Leger doing Seth Leger things,” Picard said. “We give him the ball against the Sulphurs and the Haughtons. He’s battle tested. Any time he has the ball, I like our chances.”
Leger isn’t worried about his personal accomplishments. He’s focused on getting the team ready for the playoffs.
“I’m just trying to do what’s best for the team,” Leger said. “I wasn’t focused on anything other than trying to get us the win. It’s more important to finish the season with wins so we can get a bye.”
Jack Landry got Erath on the board in the second inning when he sent a 3-1 pitch over the centerfield wall. Three batters later, Dominic Frederick doubled to left field to drive home Carter Champagne and make it 2-0.
Koah Copell scored on a passed ball in the third inning before the Bobcats exploded for four more runs in the fourth and a 7-0 lead. Landon LeMaire led off the inning with a single. He scored on an errant pickoff attempt at first.
Three batters later, Leger singled to right with the bases juiced to make it 5-0. Brennan Broussard followed with a double that scored Braxton Richard and Landen Derouen.
ED White got one back in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. They used a double and another sacrifice fly to score two more in the sixth, but that’s as close as they would get.
Frederick joined Leger with two hits and an RBI while Broussard had one hit and two RBI. Landry finished with the homer and one RBI while LeMaire, Champagne and Derouen each had hits.
Erath hosted Covenant Christian Tuesday. They travel to Catholic High on Thursday before finishing up the week Friday at VC.

VC takes care of Vandebilt Catholic

The No. 3 Vermilion Catholic Eagles stepped up in classification and defeated the Select Division II No.3-ranked Vandebilt Catholic Terriers 5-3 Saturday at Ralph Sellers Field.
The Eagles (17-7) got a strong performance on the mound from Fisher Quackenbos. The junior hurler went six innings, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three.
“The difference in the game today was our starting pitcher,” VC head coach Ben Harrington said. “Fisher had struggled his last couple of outings, but we know who he is. We’ve been waiting for him to reappear. It couldn’t have been a better spot. I’m proud of that kid.”
For Quackenbos, the confidence his coach showed in him made the difference.
“I had been struggling my last few games,” he said. “Coach showed he had confidence in me by giving me a big game. I took that confidence and put it toward myself.”
The Eagles scored four of their five runs in the third inning. Senior Jackson Trahan ignited the rally with a one-out single that hit the Vandebilt pitcher in the head. After a brief delay to make sure he was okay, play resumed.
Bryce Lege singled before Will Simon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Caden DeHart, Jacob Dubois, and Ross Dartez each drew RBI walks before Jonathan Dartez beat out an infield single to make it 5-1.
“Jackson got us going,” Harrington said. “He’s been a catalyst for us all year. That hit threw their pitcher off a little bit. Our guys did a great job at the plate of taking what they were giving us. They did exactly what they needed to do.”
The Terriers rallied in the seventh, using two hit by pitches, a walk, a single, and an error to plate two runs. Reliever Cole Albert induced a pop-out with the bases loaded to escape the jam.
Trahan finished with two hits to lead the Eagles at the plate. Jonathan Dartez had one hit and one RBI while Lege had a hit. Ross Dartez, DeHart, and Dubois each had an RBI.
VC traveled to Delcambre on Tuesday. They host Oakdale on Thursday before finishing the week at home Friday again parish rival Erath.

One Abbeville Patrolman was busy the last two weeks writing tickets.

You better obey traffic laws in Abbeville or else

Patrolman wrote 142 tickets in two weeks

Abbeville drivers, listen up! Police Chief Mike Hardy wants to remind you to follow the traffic laws, or you might end up facing some expensive consequences.
Hardy informed the city council and Mayor Roslyn White that he has recently brought on a patrolman, a former officer from Maurice, specifically to focus on one task during his shift: issuing tickets to those who violate traffic laws in Abbeville.
In just two weeks on the force, this patrolman has already issued over 142 tickets, averaging about 20 a day. Most of these citations are for drivers failing to stop at stop signs around Abbeville. One of his main hunting grounds for stop sign offenders is downtown, especially for those coming in from the La. 14 Bypass.
“That is his job to work traffic,” Hardy said at city council on Tuesday. “He has written a lot of tickets, because we want people to stop at stop signs. There is not such thing as a rolling stop, which was illegal. You need to stop.”
Chief Hardy mentioned that his department often receives calls from residents reporting speeding drivers or those ignoring stop signs. To address these concerns, he plans to assign a patrolman to the specific areas where the complaints originate.
“He’ll focus on that area and cover it thoroughly,” Hardy stated.
The definition of stopping at stop sign means coming to a complete and momentary halt before the stop line, crosswalk, or the edge of the intersection, and then proceeding only when it’s safe and you yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians.
One driver was given two running the stop sign tickets on one traffic stop because they rolled through two stops signs before the patrolman could pull the driver over.
Another driver received two running the stop sign tickets in a week by the same patrolman.
“People will tell him that they slowed down at the stop sign,” Hardy said. “It is not a slow down sign. It is stop sign.”
For those who have been given a ticket for running a stop sign in Abbeville, be prepared to pay $215. The average traffic ticket cost in Abbeville is $215.
If you decide to drive through a yield sign around Magdalen Square, that is going to cost you $215. If you run a red light or did not put your signal on when you turned, $215 per ticket.
The city fine for having illegal tint on your vehicle is $205.
If you are caught speeding, a ticket could cost anywhere from $220 to $350, depending on how fast the driver was going.
Chief Hardy explained the reason why he assigned this new patrolman to traffic.
“Abbeville has a lot of accidents for a small town,” he said. “People have a bad habit of running stop signs. Most just roll through the stop sign. If there is a four-way stop, and both are rolling through, they hit each other. No one stopped.
“If we enforce it, we are trying to change the habit of the Abbeville driver. We are not trying to be mean.”

Abbeville police check the van that the injured female drove to the hospital on Saturday.

Gun Shootout takes place in Abbeville

Female driver shot, drives self to hospital

There was a shootout in Abbeville near Martin King Drive that involved a female victim.
On Saturday, April 5, 2025, at around 4 p.m. , the Abbeville Police Department received a call about a shooting that occurred at the intersection of IJ Joiner and Martin Luther King Drive.
The caller reported being shot and was driving herself to the hospital. Abbeville Police units were dispatched to both Abbeville General Hospital and the shooting scene. Multiple callers indicated they heard several shots from high-powered weapons.
Officers obtained information through the community cameras that two vehicles were involved. The police were looking for a black Chevrolet van, an older model with a Texas license plate. The other vehicle was a late-model model blue Dodge Charger with a Louisiana license plate.
It appears that the Charger had four occupants in the vehicle; two of the occupants stepped out of the car and fired a .223 rifle and a 40-caliber pistol toward the van as it made a turn onto IJ Joiner.
The Charger drove off with the van following. The driver of the van returned fire, shooting through her windshield. The female driver of the van was struck twice, once in the arm and once in the torso area.
The driver drove herself to Abbeville General and was later transferred to a trauma facility in Lafayette.
The Dodge Charger was tracked down through community-based cameras and returned to the owner, Don’s Wholesale.
Police used GPS tracking and located the vehicle at Sateen Royale Trailer Park in Carencro. Both vehicles have been towed to be searched for evidence.
This case is still under investigation; Chief Mike Hardy urges the public to provide any further information regarding this crime or any other crime by calling the Abbeville Police Department at (337) 893-2511. You may also contact our “Tips” line at (337) 892-6777. All callers may remain anonymous. Citizens may also send anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Vermilion by calling (337) 740-TIPS or the P3 app, which can be downloaded through the Apple App Store or at Google Play Store.
