KAPLAN — Mayor Mike Kloesel announced that the City of Kaplan has acquired some COVID tests from the Vermilion Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness.
The city will be distributing the tests today, Jan. 19, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today at Clement Park.
Kloesel urged people to “please only come to pick up a test if you or someone in your household needs to be tested for COVID.
“We should be receiving tests once a week so there is no need to come get one without the need to be tested,” Kloesel said.
Instructions for picking up tests:

​On Jan. 12, 2022, at approximately 5:30 p.m. officers of the Abbeville Police Department responded to a “Shots Fired” call around the 1700 block of Isreal Parker Dr.
The subsequent investigation resulted in investigators securing a search warrant for the residence of Tavis Briggs of Abbeville.​
The investigation led to the arrest of Tavis Briggs, who was booked at the Abbeville Police Department and transported to the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center. Briggs was booked on the following charges:
• Illegal Use of Weapons
• Obstruction of Justice

Students at Rene Rost Middle School in Kaplan will participate in remote learning for the remainder of this week.
That is ahead of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday when students will already be off school.
Vermilion Parish School Superintendent Tommy Byler announced Wednesday afternoon that the move is part of the school systems COVID-19 protocols.
“Using our guidelines for data,” Byler said, “we will be moving to a remote learning model for Rene Rost Middle School on Thursday and Friday.”
