Bridge on John Hardy reopens

After more than four months, and what feels like longer for many drivers in Abbeville, the bridge on South John Hardy Drive reopened Monday afternoon.
The bridge had been closed since Nov. 30, 2017, when officials with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development unexpectedly closed the bridge after an inspection.
“There has been some tremendous patience,” Councilman Francis Plaisance said. “We have been receiving all these phone calls about the bridge.
“It’s a lot more traveled than even I realized.”

Spearman: New chief in Abbeville

On July 1, William “Bill” Spearman takes office as the new police chief for Abbeville.
With 38 years of law enforcement beneath his belt, Spearman’s plans for the city that has been drawn out for many years, and now is his chance to watch those plans unfold, one of which includes creating community action groups as his top priority.
In his announcement to run for Chief of Police, Spearman credited his long list of experience in law enforcement as the perfect candidate for the position.

David Dupuis

Dupuis now part of Vermilion Parish School Board

David Dupuis spent more than 30 years in education.
The retired former teacher, principal and coach can now add another chapter to his educational career.
Voters unanimously selected Dupuis to take over the District A seat on the Vermilion Parish School Board during a special election on March 24. He defeated JB Moreno, 1,031 votes (88 percent) to 147 votes.
Dupuis will serve the remainder of the unexpired term for the late Luddy Herpin. The next school board election is set for this fall.

Neither Terry Broussard nor Roslyn White set out to make history when each decided to run for a seat on the Abbeville City Council.
They each wanted to work hard for the people of the place they call home.
Sometimes making history is simply a happy coincidence.
