Tayler Guidry is the Jr. Parade Marshal.

Tayler Guidry to serve as Cattle Festival’s Jr. Parade Marshal

Tayler Guidry, daughter of Bradley and Aimee Guidry, has been selected to serve as the Junior Parade Marshall of the 2019 Louisiana Cattle Festival.
Tayler is from Gueydan and is an 8th grade student at Northside Christian School.
The Cattle Festival’s Grand Parade is set to roll at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Tayler is a member at-large in the Vermilion 4-H Program, a member of the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Cattle Association, a member of the National Junior Beefmaster Cattle Breeders, a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and a member of the Louisiana Junior Cattleman’s Association. Tayler is also a member of the Louisiana Junior Santa Gertrudis Cattle Association where she currently serves as the State Vice President.
Tayler is an active member of the Vermilion Parish 4-H Program. She has been chosen as an Outstanding Club Member for the past two years and has been in the parish-wide top 10 club members for both years. Tayler has participated in the beef project for six successful years. She has competed on parish, district, state, national, and international levels. She has won many awards throughout her 4-H beef career; but out of all of her successes, the awards she is most proud of are the national contests that she has won. Tayler has won the Cattleman’s Contest at the National Junior Show for the past three years and has also exhibited a three-time national class winner heifer. Tayler has dedicated her time and hard work to her many 4-H projects. Through hard work and determination, the seemingly impossible has become possible.
Tayler is also a member of the 4-H Horse program where she has competed on a parish, district, and state level. Tayler along with her ranch sorting partner, Aaron Blackmer, recently won the district and state ranch sorting contests. Being in the horse program has helped Tayler realize that there are many opportunities in 4-H besides cattle projects. She has attended the Acadiana Horse Camp for three years, where she has learned how to improve her riding skills and better understand the needs of her horses. In addition, Tayler won the Junior Public Speaking contest at the State Horse Show over this past summer.
Tayler has participated in many of the contests and projects offered through 4-H. She participates in the various camping opportunities, Achievement Day and contests, Demonstration Day contests, public speaking contests, and project record books. This past year, Tayler’s record books competed very well. She placed 5th overall on the parish level for her age group and 1st in Dairy and 2nd in Beef. Her favorite words while completing record books are “this is boring”, but eventually the hard work pays off.
Tayler’s main hobby is raising and showing her registered Santa Gertrudis, registered Beefmasters, and commercial cross cattle. She also has started a very small commercial dairy cattle herd. Some of her other hobbies include all things 4-H, riding horses, playing the guitar, playing basketball, drawing, and traveling to livestock shows.
Tayler is a hard worker who has realized that hard work, determination, being responsible, and helping others always pays off in the end. She knows that hard work turns you into the best version of yourself.
Tayler is very honored and humbled to be selected as the Junior Parade Marshall of the 2019 Louisiana Cattle Festival. Tayler comes from a long line of cattle producers from the Acadiana area and she hopes to continue the family tradition.

North Vermilion's defense tries to bring down Luke Doucet, who rushed for 285 yards.

Iota too much for North Vermilion

LEROY – Midway through the season, and with District 4-4A play a week away, the North Vermilion Patriots stand poised for their new adventures in Class 4A.
But what coach Brett Blakey’s squad saw Friday night against Iota provided some sobering moments in a 30-7 defeat.
“At 3-2, I think we’re better than some expected us to be,” Blakey said. “For the most part, the guys are doing a great job. But we’ve got to learn how to finish the job. We had trouble with Ascension (Episcopal) and Erath, but were able to pull those out.
“Tonight, they’re a good football team, and they played well and we didn’t. We’ve got to play better, execute better. We could be 5-0 right now, and we’d still need to get better.”
The game, and actually both halves, started well for the Patriots, but they had nothing to show for their efforts.
They drove to a first-and-goal at the Bulldogs’ 8 with their first possession, got a 7-yard run from senior quarterback Darius Gilliam and then – after a pair of offsetting penalties – failed in three straight runs from the one-yard line.
“That killed us,” Blakey said. “Even with everything else, it would have been 10-7 (Iota) at half, and it’s a completely difference story.”
Undaunted and trailing 10-0 at half, the Patriots marched from their 26 to the Iota 14-yard line before being repulsed on fourth and one.
“We score those two times, and it’s a completely different midset,” Blakey said. The night belonged to burley senior running back Luke Doucet as his relentless pounding left the host squad gassed and grasping by game’s end.
Doucet finished with 285 yards on 21 attempts.
After the second failed NVHS drive to start the second half, it was Doucet’s 52-yard ramble that set up teammate Zan Conner’s 3-yard run that made it 17-0.
And, after another valiant effort by Gilliam ended with a fumble on Iota’s 19, it was Doucet who blew past the weary Patriots for an 86-yard touchdown and a 23-0 score.
It was his 20th carry of the night.
The lone bright spot for North Vermilion came moments later, when Kendrick Baudoin returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the Patriots.
By the time the game was over, sophomore Ethan Guidry had taken over for Gilliam behind center. He represents the Patriots’ future, But Gilliam and the other veterans have current issues to address, starting next week at LaGrange.
They know they need to get better quickly, and are sure they can.
Iota just drove the point home.

VC could be declared Vermilion Parish Football Champions

The Eagles cruised to a win over Erath

If there were such thing as a Vermilion Parish football champion, then the winner of the award this year would be the Vermilion Catholic Eagles.
The Eagles (4-1) have played three Class 3A Vermilion Parish football teams and beat each one after scoring an average of 38 points.
The Eagles have now beaten Abbeville, Kaplan, and the Erath Bobcats became the latest parish victim.
For the second week in a row, VC jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a victory.
“It feels great to beat those three teams,” said VC head coach Kevin Fouquier. “I know we did not play every team in Vermilion Parish, but the teams we did not play, were beaten by teams we played. I guess you can call us the Vermilion Parish champion.”
It was a 0-0 game after the first quarter, but then the bottom fell out for Erath, and the Eagles took advantage of it.
The Bobcats fumbled three times in the second period, and VC cashed them in for points.
On the first fumble, the Eagles recovered the ball at the EHS 42. Two plays later, VC quarterback Drew Lege connected with Saul Dartez for a 32-yard touchdown.
Andrew Marceaux ran in the two-point play for the 8-0 lead.
On the kick-off, Erath had trouble handling the football, and VC’s Josh Sagrera recovered the football.
It took VC four plays to score. Moe Maxile darted five yards up the middle for a touchdown. The TD was set up by a 20-yard reception by Camden Sellers.
On Erath’s next possession, it fumbled again, and VC would score its third TD.
Sagrera had a 16-yard scoring run with 4:23 to play in the first half.
Down 21-0, the Bobcats were stopped on fourth down, and the Eagles got good field position at the EHS 38-yard-line.
Lege found Colin Broussard for a 25-yard gain to set up VC’s fourth TD. Jacques Touchet bulldozed his way into the end zone.
Just like that, VC scored 28 points thanks to three EHS turnovers, and a stopped fourth down run.
Erath head coach Eric LeBlanc said before the game that his team could not make mistakes against a team like VC. The Bobcats made three big mistakes in the first half.
“After the fumbles, the wind left our sails,” said LeBlanc.
VC had 337 yards of offense, and Erath had 331.
Passing the football, Lege completed 13- out-of-20 passes for 277 yards and two TDs.
Maxile and Andre LeBlanc each had six carries for 22 yards for VC.
Jax Thibodeaux pounded out 121 yards on 23 carries for EHS. Teammate Lane LeBlanc had 11 carries for 71 yards.
Curtis Cormier was Erath’s top receiver with five catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
EHS QB Luke LeBlanc completed 12 out of 24 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns.
