Passenger Succumbs to Injuries After Falling From Pickup in St. Landry Parish

PRAIRIE RONDE – At approximately 8 a.m. on September 21, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle crash on LA 103 South of US-167 in St. Landry Parish. The crash ultimately took the life of 38-year-old Frederick Freeman of Opelousas.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed Freeman was riding in the bed of a 2006 Dodge Dakota. For unknown reasons, Freeman fell out of the moving truck and sustained serious injuries.
Freeman was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On September 30th, State Police was notified that Freeman succumbed to his injuries on September 27th. The driver was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment was not suspected on the part of Freeman or the driver. The driver did submit a voluntary breath sample which showed no alcohol present. The driver committed no violations and was not cited. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.

Kaplan Pirates become latest victim of the VC Eagles

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Pirates became the latest victim of the Vermilion Catholic Eagles.
First, there was Class 2A Catholic High of New Iberia. Then last week the Class 3A Abbeville Wildcats could not beat the Eagles. The Kaplan Pirates now join Abbeville and Catholic High in the loss column.
The Eagles, who jumped out to a 17-0 lead, held on to win 25-23 in a parish showdown.
This Friday the Eagles play their third straight Class 3A team when the Erath Bobcats (2-2) visit VC.
Friday’s win was the first time in the school history that VC beat Kaplan. VC lost the last two meetings.
VC head coach Kevin Fouquier told his team to enjoy the win for 24 hours and then begin focusing on Erath.
“This was a big win for us. That is how we play well in all phases of the game,” said the VC head coach to his team.
Before the Pirates’ fans could sit down and enjoy their popcorn, they found their team down 14-0 three minutes into the game.
VC scored on the first-play of the game when junior Josh Sagrera ran the opening kick off 87 yards for a touchdown. J-Rob Alums nailed the extra point. However, on the ensuing kickoff, Fouquier called for a successful onside kick.
Alec Broussard recovered the onside kick at the Kaplan 48-yard line. Five plays later, Moe Maxilie scored a touchdown on a 15-yard run at the 9:40 mark of the first period.
It took VC only 80 seconds to score 14 points.
Fouquier said his game-plan was to try an onside kick as early as possible in the game.
“We had to get an extra possession there somewhere,” said Fouquier.
Up 14-0, the Eagles added three more points when Alums successfully made a 28-yard field goal.
Kaplan finally got the momentum it was looking for at the start of the second period, down 17-0.
The Pirates put together a 22-play, 78-yard drive that took 10 minutes off of the clock.
Kaplan ran 21 running plays on the drive, including a 4-yard TD run by Kevin White. He also scored on a two-point play and just like that, Kaplan was back in the game, down 17-8 at halftime.
On Kaplan’s first possession of the third period, the Pirates fumbled at midfield. The Eagles marched 50 yards in eight plays. Josh Sagrera scored from the 15-yard line that made it 25-8
The game got interesting on a bad snap, and Kaplan recovered the ball on the VC 18-yard line with eight minutes to play in the game.
Two plays after the fumble, White scored his second touchdown. White was stuffed, however, on the two-point play by VC’s Alec Broussard.
The Pirates scored a late touchdown on a Nathan Sistrunk one-yard run. Sistrunk had 13 carries for 85 yards in the game. White led KHS with 104 yards on 18 carries.
With VC leading 25-20 and facing fourth down with four seconds left in the game, Maxile took the handoff and ran 40 yards backward towards his end zone for a safety as time expired.
Maxile lost 40 yards rushing on the play but still manage to finish with 52 yards on 14 carries.
Andre LeBlanc had seven carries for 36 yards.
VC quarterback Drew Lege completed 14 out of 21 passes for 189 yards.
Colin Broussard had two catches for 68 yards, while Alums had three for 38 yards.

NV quarterback Darius Gilliam looks for running room.

North Vermilion Patriots hold off Erath Bobcats with late score

By Bruce Brown

Special to The Meridional

LEROY – They may be in different classes and districts now, but the North Vermilion Patriots and Erath Bobcats still bring plenty of emotion when they meet.
That was true Friday night at NVHS, as the host Patriots withstood a second-half rally to hold off the Bobcats 34-27 and improve to 3-1 in their first year in Class 4A.
The Patriots made plenty of mistakes, perhaps dwelling on the previous week’s rousing overtime win at Ascension Episcopal. But Erath matched most of those miscues with errors of their own.
It was not a sharp showing by either side, but it was entertaining.
“This is my third year here, and we had never beaten Ascension until last week,’ said NVHS coach Brett Blakey. “That started to give us some confidence. But I told the team that win would have meant nothing if we had lost tonight.
“Instead of 3-1 with something to shoot for, we would have been back at 2-2. But we took the opportunity and ran with it.”
“It’s hard to find a lot that’s good from this game,” Bobcats coach Eric LeBlanc said. “But, congratulations to Norh Vermilion. They beat us. They made the plays they needed to make.”
‘Hat’s off to Erath,” Blakey said. “They were tied with us, scored twice after half to tie us. They have a good team. It was an entertaining game.”
It was a game that wasn’t decided until Patriots quarterback Darius Gilliam picked up a clinching first down with a minute to go.
It was Gilliam who scored the winning touchdown on a 10-yard run with 28 seconds left in the third quarter after the Bobcats had rallied from a 20-14 halftime deficit to force a 27-27 tie.

It was also Gilliam who, with a 34-27 lead and second down at the EHS 41, forced an ill-advised pitchout that was claimed by the Bobcats with 2:10 remaining.

“Darius plays his tail off every game, evey play,” Blakey said. “He had a (similar) pitch against Abbeville that went for a 70-yard touchdown. You can’t get mad at him. You just have to talk to him. It’s a learning experience.”

Given a shot for another score, the Bobcats suffered two straight calamitous center snaps to Luke LeBlanc for losses of 5 and 10 yards. Eventually EHS had to punt.
It was that kind of night. Execution could not hope to match emotions for the two old rivals. North Vermilion has moved up to Class 4A now, while Erath remains in District 8-3A, but the rivalry still runs deep.
Kendrick Baudoin opened the scoring with a 28-yard run for a 7-0 Patriots lead, but a 3-yard scamper around end by LeBlanc knotted it at 7 apiece. LeBlanc set sail on a 78-yard run to the NVHS 6 just one snap after the kickoff to set up the score.
Baudoin sped in from 39 yards for 14-7, but LeBlanc’s 14-yard score knotted things at 14 with 4:09 left in the half.
Then EHS fullback Jax Thibodeaux, fighting for extra yardage with a pass from LeBlanc, fumbled it away with 1:41 left until halftime.
Gilliam took advantage with a 9-yard run and 20-14 lead at the break.
He stretched the lead to 27-14 with a 40-yard run in the third, only to see the visitors strike back.
First, Thibodeaux plowed through the defense from 7 yards out, Then Thibodeaux struck from the 11 to tie it at 27 at 4:58 in the third.
The Patriots had one more card to play, and they made it work.
“This came down to us just doing our jobs,” Blakey said. “Like (New England coach) Bill Belichick says, ‘Just do your job.’ I’m proud of our team. For as many mistakes as we made, we never quit.”

VC's Josh Sagrera has breakout game against Kaplan

He scored TDs and had a great game on defense

Vermilion Catholic junior Josh Sagrera had his breakout game Friday against the Kaplan Pirates.
He helped the Eagles beat Kaplan 25-22.
It is no secret that Sagrera is blessed with speed and endurance thanks to inheriting the genes of his parents - Anne and Craig.
In only his second game as a kick returner, Sagrera took it to the house on the first play of the game. The Pirates kicked off to Sagrera, and he saw the middle of the field was full, so he bounced outside and got a great block from Moe Maxile to open up a hole. Then the Sagrera running genes took over, and he scored a touchdown.
“When I crossed the endzone, the feeling was amazing,” said Sagrera. “I had a headache.”
Sagrera’s TD-run went for 87 yards, and it set the tone for the Eagles and Sagrera.
Throughout the game, his named was called on the PA system. Playing strong safety, the junior had at least 10 tackles, including a big stop on a two-point conversion attempt by Kaplan with less than a minute to play in the game.
On offense, he had two carries for 16 yards. One of those carries was a 15-yard touchdown run in the third period. Add two receptions for 17 yards to go along with his 87-yard kick off return, 15-yard TD run and sprinkle in 10 tackles, and you have the making of a breakout star for VC.
