This tradition of Erath 1st graders being chosen to serve as crown bearers and/or flower girls goes back to the early 50s.
Janie Broussard is the daughter of Emily Suire and is in Regina Calliouet’s classroom. Ian is the son of Claudia Marin and is in Jennifer Toups’ class.
Each year, all first graders gather in the cafeteria and names are picked. Last year’s crown bearer Matthew Thorn and flower girl Harper Frederick helped Principal Karla Langlinais pick the names to represent DES at Erath’s Homecoming festivities.

Anita Levy

Levy running for District E School Board seat

Education is the key to success. It’s what we believe and it’s what we teach our children. Our public schools are here to serve the educational needs of all the children. School board members are elected to provide the professional leadership that supports the vision and goals of the school district. Board members must work together with other members to represent the interest, values and concerns of not only the district they serve, but the entire community.
When elected to the school board, I will work diligently to restore harmony, dignity and honor to the position. I will listen to all positions on an issue, communicate my position, weigh the facts and focus on what is in the best interest of the children of Vermilion Parish. I assure you every decision that I have, every decision I make and every vote I take will always have the children of the parish first and foremost in mind.
Service is the sacrifice of one’s own desires, time and energy to benefit others. I am a woman of service; passionate about making a positive difference in my community. I will listen before speaking. I will serve the needs of the students and not my own. I have the time and energy to dedicate to help the Vermilion Parish School System maintain its high rankings.
I believe I can be an effective School Board Member. I am ready, willing and able to put the children first. It’s time to get back to the business of putting the welfare and success of the children of this district and parish first.
I want to be a part of a team committed to a fresh start. I humbly ask you each for your prayers and support in the upcoming election.
Please Vote #83- Anita Levy for Vermilion Parish School Board Member District E

Dexter Callahan

Dexter Callahan seeks election to District 12 seat on Vermilion Parish Police Jury

I, Dexter Callahan, would like to announce my candidacy for the District 12 seat of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury. I have been happily married to my wife Brenda for the last 41 years. Together we have raised 3 children and they in turn have provided us with 4 wonderful grandchildren.
I retired from Slemco where I enjoyed an exciting career of 31 years serving their customers. I have also had the privilege of serving on the Coulee Des Jonc Drainage District Board of Commissioners for the past 24 years. I truly believe that my experience working with the two previous jurors has helped me to understand some of the problems associated with District 12. I am fully aware that there are many more issues out there that will need to be addressed and I am really anxious to try and tackle them while working with the rest of the jury.
If elected on October 12, I will work hard to try and help those in need of our services whether it is for drainage, roads, garbage disposal or any other problems in our district.
Please feel free to contact me at 337-652-4342 at any time with any questions you may have. My email address is dcalthetiger@hotmail.com and my number is 79 on the ballot.

Louisiana National Guard Soldiers with G Company and D Company, 2nd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, recite the Soldier's Creed during a deployment ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility #2 at Esler Field in Pineville, Louisiana, Sept. 6, 2019. Louisiana National Guard aviators to deploy to Afghanistan

By Staff Sgt. Noshoba Davis, Louisiana National Guard Public Affairs Office

PINEVILLE – The Louisiana National Guard’s G Company and D Company, 2nd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment held a deployment ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility #2 at Esler Field in Pineville, Sept. 6.
More than 50 Guardsmen, including two father-son teams and one married couple, are scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan starting this week. Including premobilization training at Fort Hood, the soldiers will be away from home for nearly one year. Once overseas, they will provide air movement support and medical evacuation support to ground forces.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards presided over the ceremony in Pineville.
“I just want you to know, as a fellow American and as an Army Veteran, how immensely proud I am to call you my brothers and my sisters. There is no nobler calling than that of a soldier protecting life and liberty,” said Edwards. “As a fellow Louisianan and as governor of a great state, I cannot be more confident that you will execute your mission because you’re well trained, you’re well lead, and you’re disciplined.”
“To those soldiers deploying I tell you all the time you’re my favorite Americans, and you are because you answer the call over and over again,” said Maj. Gen. Glenn H. Curtis, adjutant general of the LANG. “We’ve been in this war for almost 19 years, and a lot of you have deployed multiple times; you just keep stepping up to the plate. Take care of each other.”
Father-son team, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Ricky Caldwell and Spc. Jacob Caldwell of Dry Prong, are one of two father-son teams deploying with the 2-238th. Ricky, a pilot with G Co., is on his second deployment with the LANG. Jacob, a crew chief with G Co., is deploying for the first time.
“It’s strange and comforting to be deploying with my dad, but at the same time it’s not because we will both be gone,” said Jacob. “I’m looking forward to using all of my training and getting to do my job.”
“It’s going to be different this time having him with me and leaving a gap here at home while we are both gone. I’m proud of him; he’s done great things,” said Ricky. “We all are close knit in this unit, so it’s one big family with us from the E-1 all the way up to the O-4.”
This will be the 2-238th’s third overseas deployment since 9/11. The aviation unit is also a key part of state emergency operations and has provided search and rescue, air evacuations and support for almost every state emergency, including: Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Harvey, Shreveport forest fires, marsh fires in New Orleans, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and the multiple floods of 2016.
