Telly Briggs

Telly Briggs booked by Abbeville Police on three counts of simple kidnapping

Telly Briggs has been booked after he allegedly kidnapped a woman and two children.
On March 24, at approximately 6:30 p.m., patrol officers with the Abbeville Police Department responded to a call of a possible disturbance at Chapel Down Apartments on West Port Street.
The complainant stated that her daughter called her and told her that her boyfriend had beat her up. The complainant stated to officers that she was also going to the apartment to check on her daughter.
Patrol officers met with the complainant at her daughter’s apartment. The complainant and officers knocked on the door, but no one answered. The door was unlocked, so officers and the complainant went inside the residence. The apartment was empty, so an apartment manager came out and secured the apartment.
Officers learned that the complainant had several missed calls from a local business. The complainant called the number back and spoke to a cashier, who thought that complainant’s daughter was possibly in danger. The complainant’s daughter was last known to be in the company of her two juvenile children and her live-in boyfriend, Telly Briggs, 33.
Officers were able to contact the daughter via cell phone for a short amount of time. During this time, officers asked her if she was in danger, and the daughter replied “yes.” The daughter quit responding to officers’ questions and the call was dropped.
Through various avenues, officers received information of different locations that the daughter (now considered a victim) was at various locations. The victim was entered into N.C.I.C. as an Endangered Missing Person and Brigg’s vehicle was entered into N.C.I.C.
Detectives took over the case in the morning and began investigating possible locations of the victim. With assistance from family members, were able to determine that the victim was still with her juvenile children and Briggs, and they were possibly in the Crowley area.
Detectives were able to locate the victim, her juvenile children and Briggs at a local motel just outside of the city limits of Crowley. The victim and her juvenile children were unharmed. Officers took Briggs into custody without incident.
Telly Briggs was arrested and charged with three (3) counts of Simple Kidnapping. Brigg’s bond was set at $150,000 ($50,000 for each count).
Chief of Police Bill Spearman would like to commend his officers for a job well done and would like to thank surrounding agencies for all assistance in this investigation. Chief Spearman would also like to thank the citizens of Abbeville for their support and help they provide to the Abbeville Police Department.
Anyone with any information regarding any crime is encouraged to contact the Abbeville Police Department. You may also contact our “Tips” line at 892-6777. All callers may remain anonymous.

Unrestrained Driver Killed in Acadia Parish Crash

ACADIA PARISH – At approximately 6:30 pm on March 24, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash on LA Hwy 91 near Jacob Road in Acadia Parish. The crash took the life of 37-year-old Cory Landreneau of Eunice.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Landreneau was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on LA Hwy 91. For unknown reasons, Landreneau failed to negotiate a curve. His vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left and overturned.
Landreneau was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected. He was transported to Lafayette General Hospital in critical condition, but later died as a result of his injuries. Impairment is unknown but standard toxicology samples were obtained and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.

Abbeville man sentenced for lying on firearm application

ALEXANDRIA, La. – Gene Williams III, 22, of Abbeville, was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Dee. D. Drell to 14 months in prison for lying on a firearms application.
Williams was also sentenced to three years of supervised release to follow imprisonment.
Williams lied on an ATF Form 4473 on February 26, 2018, in order to purchase a Taurus, Model 740, Slim .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol at a pawnshop in Abbeville.
Williams stated on the form that he had no felony charges pending against him when, in fact, at the time he had been charged in the 15th Judicial District Court of Louisiana with a variety of felony offenses, including drug possession, weapon possession, aggravated assault, and racketeering.
Williams pleaded guilty in federal court on December 13, 2018, for the false statement he made on the ATF Form 4473. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
Project Safe Neighborhoods is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts. Project Safe Neighborhoods is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.
Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
The ATF conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic Rossetti prosecuted the case.

Lloyd Campisi, Janice Macomber, Debbie Garrot and Mayor Mark Piazza display the
Sicilian Flag. Garrot helped to organize Saturday’s Sicilian Festival. Campisi, Macomber and Piazza represent the I Cugini Della Sicilia (Cousins of Sicily).

First Sicilian Celebration Saturday at Guarino Blacksmith Shop in Abbeville

The Sicilian Celebration is nearing and Debbie Garrot said she is expecting a great turnout. The event takes place on March 23 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and will take place at the Sam Guarino Blacksmith Shop Museum and Heritage Center located at 304 S. State Street in Abbeville.
Garrot arranged the celebration after learning the history of Sicilian heritage here in Vermilion Parish. “Once I heard of the hardships of those who came here from Sicily, along with their rich heritage, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hold this celebration for everyone to learn more about this great culture,” Garrot explained.
There was massive immigration in the late 1800s and early 1900s and New Orleans was a destination for many. A large number of those immigrants traveled to Vermilion Parish and descendents still reside here today. Names such as Piazza, Campisi, Guzzardo, and many other surnames originated from the far away land of Sicily.
Although they carried very few possessions on their month-long journey, Italians brought old world cultural values, work ethic, frugality, faith, family devotion and sheer joy of life to many parishes in Louisiana. When it comes to food, pasta’s, pizza’s, and a lot of the carb-filled foods that ‘cajuns’ like to fill up on, Italians bring in flavors of the land, which include tomatoes.
“We cannot wait to see everyone, laugh with everyone, and learn more about such a colorful culture,” Garrot said. “Please come and join us.”
The celebration will hold a cooking contest, tours of the Blacksmith Shop Museum, live music, as well as imported wine and beer that will be available for purchase. Admission is free.
