Abbeville High hosting two-day Regional powerlifting competition

The Abbeville High gymnasium will be busy Friday and Saturday with the 2020 LHSPLA West Regional Power Lifting Meet.
For the first time, the high school will be hosting the two-day event.
The girls will begin lifting Friday at 10 a.m., and it will go until around 5 p.m., and around 100 girls are lifting.
Saturday morning will be busy with more than 200 male powerlifters. That meet will go until around 7 p.m.

Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles travel to face St. Mary’s

St Mary’s basketball team has been knocked out of the quarterfinal round of the Division IV playoffs three years in a row, and they are tired of it. The team wants more.
Tom Collins is St. Mary’s basketball coach and he is coaching a group of seniors who he describes as “hungry girls.”
“They want more than reaching the quarterfinals,” said Collins. “I have four senior starters who are tired of being knocked out by Houma Christian or Vermilion Catholic. They want to get to the next round.”

Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles put on show in front of next opponent

With the No. 2 St. Mary basketball team sitting in the crowd, the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles performed in front of who will probably be their next opponent.
No. 7 VC beat No. 10 Opelousas Catholic 52-40 in the first round of the Division IV basketball playoffs on Thursday.
St. Mary has yet to play a first-round contest. They will play No. 15 Calvary Baptist on Monday. Expect VC head coach Kim Guidry to be scouting St. Mary on Monday.

Third time a charm for Gueydan

GUEYDAN - The third time was the charm for the Gueydan Honeybears Thursday night in the Class 1A playoffs.
Gueydan advances to the second round after beating Oberlin, 48-44. Gueydan plays No. 2 East Iberville, who drew a first-round bye.
The game will be Monday at 6 p.m. on the road.
The No. 15 Honeybears drew No. 18 Oberlin in the first round. That was good news and bad news for Gueydan.
The good news was that Oberlin was no stranger to Gueydan. They played one another twice this season, so both teams knew one another.

Kaplan, Abbeville fall in first-round

The Abbeville Lady Wildcats and the Kaplan Lady Pirates were eliminated for the Class 3A playoffs.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind 12-5 in the first quarter and they were unable to recover against Loranger, the Class 3A defending state champs.
Loranger won 45-31 behind the scoring of Myan Barthelemy, who scored 22 points.
Abbeville was down 29-12 at halftime.
JaLearreia Soelv led Abbeville with 12 points, and teammate Chelsea Stewart made seven.
