Sales tax collection down $100,000 in July in Vermilion Parish

Overall, sales tax collections dipped $100,000 from a year ago.
Most of the decrease in collections was from the school board, police jury and sheriff’s office.
According to the July 2017 sales tax report, the “Big Three” collected four percent less than they did a year ago.
That four percent is about a combined $91,000 less.
The school board collected $511,000 in July or $30,000 less than a year ago. The police jury collected $34,000 less for a total of $766,000. The Sheriff’s Office collected $27,000 less for a total of $383,000.

The Court for Vermilion Catholic’s 50th Homecoming: Queen: Kylie White; Court: Gabby Clark, Averi Frith, Hailey Gunter, Gabby Landry, Victoria Sterling, Ainsley Summers, Hannah Trahan and Lily Veazey. In honor of the 50th anniversary, a reception will be held at the Ministries Building following the Homecoming Mass on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. Alumni are invited to join in all of the homecoming activities, including the bonfire Thursday at 8 p.m. at the practice field andthe parade at 3 p.m. in downtown Abbeville.

ERATH — The Vermilion Parish School Board approved the renaming of the Erath baseball field to the “Ross Granger Field.”
The Granger family was on hand to receive the resolution at the board meeting.
Ross lost his life in November of 2016 at the age of 19 after battling a long illness.
Nathan Granger, Ross’ father, thanked the school board for approving the resolution. He also told those on hand about Ross that not many people knew.
When he began to speak, he had to pause to hold back tears.

Maurice City Hall flooded in August of 2016.

Maurice will look for bids to repair flood damage at city hall

MAURICE — Day-to-day operations for the Village of Maurice have been run out of a portable building since historic flooding heavily damaged city hall in August of 2016.
The Maurice Police Department has been able to partially get back into its building next door to city hall.
Those two buildings will soon be a step closer to being fully restored. The Maurice Board of Alderman will authorize the advertisement for bids for the restoration of flood damage for city hall and the police department.

State Police Detectives Arrest a Breaux Bridge Police Officer

BREAUX BRIDGE – Shortly before 5:00 pm on September 21, 2017, Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations/Lafayette Field Office (LSP LFO) arrested 29-year-old Craig David, a police officer with the Breaux Bridge Police Department.
David was charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile, computer aided solicitation of a minor, and malfeasance in office.
