Rails To Trails opposition to attend railroad board meeting in Abbeville

Many people are expected to attend the Vermilion and Iberia Railroad Development District Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, July 24.
The meeting is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. inside the LSU Ag Center Building in Abbeville.
The meeting is expected to be well attended because of what is expected to be discussed.
A group of parish citizens is expected to speak out against the Rails to Trails plan to convert the old railroad tracks into a bike and walking trail.
The trail would be built from Abbeville to Delcambre.

Vermilion Chamber of Commerce looks at possibly moving downtown

After 41 years at the same location in Abbeville, the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce is considering moving to a new location.
The city of Abbeville and the Chamber of Commerce are in the early stages of discussions about the possibility of relocating the Chamber’s office from its current location on the La. 14 Bypass in front of the SunBelt Lodge Motel to the downtown Abbeville’s Tourism Center and Cultural Alliance Building (the old library).

New National Guard Readiness Center coming to Abbeville

There is a lengthy history with the Louisiana National Guard in Abbeville.
Plans are in place to ensure there is a bright future, too.
While still in the early stages, the National Guard will construct a new Defense Readiness Center in the city. This facility, designed to enhance the Guard’s operational readiness and response capabilities, will be located on city property near the Chris Crusta Memorial Airport. Officials with the National Guard signed a lease in February 2023.

Two arrests made in connection to July 9 homicide in Abbeville

The Abbeville Police Department and Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, July 8, at approximately 9:51 p.m.
Officers arrested Carlton Hills, 57, of 1401 Isreal Parker Dr. in Abbeville. He will be charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Obstruction of Justice, and other charges are expected. Abbeville Police also arrested Laticia Lewis, 41, of 1401 Isreal Parker Dr. in Abbeville. She is being charged with Principal to 2nd Degree Murder.

Car chase ends with driver crashing into Cajun Claws in Abbeville

On Sunday night, a high-speed car chase on Charity Street in Abbeville ended with a car crashing into the Cajun Claws Restaurant.
Abbeville Chief of Police Mike Hardy reported that Kevin Collins from Carencro was allegedly caught shoplifting at the Wal-Mart in Abbeville. After being spotted, Collins fled the store, prompting a high-speed pursuit by the police down Charity Street. It is estimated that speeds of more than 90 miles per hour were reached during the chase.
