Stella Petry Broussard will take the starting line Sunday morning for the 8th annual Beignet Boogie 5k.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. on the side of Mount Carmel in Abbeville.
Broussard, 58, has run dozens of races just like this one. Only, this one is different.
Completely different.
Last July, Broussard suffered a massive stroke. During her recovery, Broussard’s wellness nurse had her set goals.
“I wanted to run,” Broussard said.
Broussard set that first goal to be met in October for the Boogie on the Boulevard in Kaplan.
“That’s always the first race I do to kick off my running season,” Broussard said. “I wasn’t able to participate in that one.”
Broussard adjusted her goal, leading to Sunday morning’s race, six months after the stroke.
“I’m so excited,” Broussard said. “I will be set on crossing that finish line.”
Broussard will be driven Sunday by the same motivation that helped get her out of the hospital bed in the first place.
“What got me going,” Broussard said, “was my faith, family and friends. When each family member would walk in my hospital room, I would look in their eyes. I couldn’t do that to them.
“I refused to have them bury me.”
Broussard also refused to hear what she couldn’t do.
“They kept telling me what I couldn’t do,” Broussard said. “No, just give me some time and I’m going to do it.”
Broussard will not be concerned about her time when it comes to the race.
“If I have to run, walk or crawl,” Broussard said, “I will finish this race.”
She will not be alone.
“My 7-year-old granddaughter, Xy, is so worried about me,” Broussard said. “She told me she is going to do it with me.”
Other family members will join her. Her grandson, Xavier Alexander will run. Her great-nephew, Quinton Marshall, a former Vermilion Catholic student, will run, too.
Her husband, Kevin, will be there, as he has throughout the entire process.
“He’s more than a rock,” Broussard said. “He was my eyes when I couldn’t see and my legs when I couldn’t walk. He is my everything.
“He is a superman.”
Family and friends will be easy to spot on Sunday. They will be wearing T-shirts honoring Broussard’s effort. While promoting stroke awareness, the saying on the shirt is fitting.
“In this family,” Broussard said, “no one fights alone.”

ABBEVILLE — Graveside services were held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at St. Paul Cemetery honoring the life of Lawrence Clostio, 93, who died Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation. He was laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Deacon Francis Cao officiating the services.
Lawrence is survived by his son, Russell Clostio of Sfax, Tunisia, North Africa; two daughters, Bonnie LeBlanc and her husband Ricky, and Trudy Guidry and her husband Robert, all of Abbeville; grandchildren, Brandon Clostio of Baytown, TX, Kimberly Luis and her husband Rick of Houston, TX, Maha Clostio of Sfax, Tunisia, North Africa, Jill LeBlanc of Abbeville, Shade LeBlanc and his wife Sonia of Fulshear, TX, and Nicholas Guidry and his wife Emeral of Maurice; four great grandchildren, Greysen Simon, Abbie Bourque, Brennan Bauer and Sydney Bauer; and sister, Louise Clostio of Kaplan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Earline LeMaire Clostio; parents, Ulysse Clostio and the former Amanda Perry; daughter-in-law, Mounira Clostio; brothers, Randall, Exal, Calice, Willie and Allen Clostio; and sisters, Marie Clostio, Exodie Herpin, Ella Badon, Naomi DeBlanc, Inez Corner and Lucille Langlinais.

The 46th Annual Vermilion Parish 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was a great success. It involved 178 young people who exhibited over 254 head of livestock (beef, sheep, goats, dairy, swine) and 84 poultry entries. This event is organized by the LSU AgCenter Extension Service and was held January 17-18, at the Cecil McCrory Exhibit Building in Abbeville. A large crowd was on hand to witness the skills of these 4-H’ers and to view the extensive exhibition of the highest quality stock in Vermilion Parish.
The sale of market animals totaled $132,865.25, of which $5,400.00 was raised for the Vermilion 4-H Foundation. A total of 63 market hogs sold with an average of $6.78 per pound, 22 market lambs sold with an average of $7.48 per pound, 5 commercial heifers sold with an average of $2,260.00 per head, and 2 market goats sold for an average of $8.00 per pound.

The Overall Grand Champion Market Hog and Overall Vermilion Bred Champion Market Hog was exhibited by Kennedy Marceaux of Rene Rost Middle School. The Overall Reserve Champion Market Hog and Overall Reserve Champion Vermilion Bred Market Hog was exhibited by Katie Domingue of Erath High and purchased by Abbeville Electric for $5.75 per pound. The Overall Grand Champion and Grand Champion Vermilion Bred Market Lamb was exhibited by Emily Vidalier or Forked Island-E. Broussard Elementary. It was sold to Broussard Brothers for $11.00 per pound. The award for Overall Champion Lamb was sponsored in memory of J. G. (Ken Broussard). Bradyn Bearb of F.I.-E.B. Elementary exhibited the Overall Reserve Champion and the Overall Reserve Champion Vermilion Bred Market Lamb. It was purchased by Dustin Guillory and Bobby Kerwin of Raven Flo, Inc., for $ 13.50 per pound. This award is sponsored in memory of Fred Zaunbrecher by Hugh and Sherry Zaunbrecher.
