Two Teens Die in Single-Vehicle Crash

Acadia Parish – Shortly before 8 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near LA Hwy. 91 in Acadia Parish.
The crash took the life of 19-year-old Kylan Mier and 19-year-old Dante Lacomb, both of Morse.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Mier was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro. While traveling westbound, he failed to properly negotiate the off-ramp curve at Exit 76. His vehicle ran off the roadway and began to overturn, then struck the LA 91 bridge embankment before coming to rest.
Mier was restrained at the time of the crash. However, Lacomb, who was the front seat passenger, was not restrained. Both men were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is unknown but standard toxicology samples were obtained for analysis. Speed is believed to be the major factor in the crash. This crash remains under investigation.
According to NHSTA, for more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2016, speeding was a contributing factor in 27% of all fatal crashes nationwide. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Every day, Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects of motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding. Please be a responsible driver, obey speed limits, drive sober, buckle up and avoid all distractions.

Jimmy Vice

March 30, 1937 ~ December 19, 2019

ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 3, 2020 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Abbeville, Louisiana, for Jimmy Vice, age 82, who passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, December 19, 2019, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Father Louis Richard, pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, will officiate at the mass.
Jimmy was born in Meaux, Louisiana, on March 30, 1937, to Hilda and Johnny Vice, the fifth of eight children. He attended Meaux High School and graduated as a member of the class of 1955. The memories he spoke of most often from school were about basketball, his Meaux Tiger teammates, the agriculture classes and Coach Rupert. Although he lived in other communities, he said that Meaux felt like home. He was very grateful to be able to spend his last years there. After high school graduation, Jimmy was awarded a basketball scholarship to Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now ULL). He and his 1956-57 basketball teammates from SLI were recently honored at a ULL basketball game. It was a great day for reminiscing with old friends and a very proud night for him! Jimmy did not complete his education at SLI, but later returned to school at McNeese State University and got his Bachelor of Science, Masters and Specialist degrees.
Jimmy was very proud to be a Vermilion Parish educator. He was a social studies teacher and basketball coach at Erath High School, an assistant principal at North Vermilion High School and a principal at Indian Bayou Elementary School. He tried to be fair when it came to discipline, but firmly believed in “spare the rod, spoil the child”. The guy could swing a paddle!
Over the last few weeks and months, Jimmy was very lucky to be surrounded by his family, good friends and by the amazing sitters whose care allowed him to stay in his home. Rhonda, Kitty and Samantha added kind nursing, good cooking and fun conversation to his days and nights. They were a blessing to him and his family. The St. Joseph Hospice staff also were instrumental in keeping Jimmy comfortable and safe at home. Their compassion, spiritual guidance and medical care were wonderful.
Jimmy’s survivors include his daughters, Denise Nugent and husband Keith, and Jackie Abshire and husband Oscar; his sons, Martin Vice and his wife Cathy, and Jules Vice and his wife Cyndi; his daughter-in-law, Irma Vice; his grandchildren, Simone Nugent, Brittany Geist, Lane Andrews, Evan Andrews, Barrett Nugent, Olivia O’Sullivan, Kimberly Harkness, Trevor Vice, Bailey Vice, Gavin Vice, Sam Vice, John Vice, Laci Vice and Zoe Vallot; his great-grandchildren, Beckham O’Sullivan, Ellie Andrews, Rosie O’Sullivan, Jolie Harkness, Branson Poirier, Lillianna Vice, and Luke Vice; and his siblings, Hazel Trahan, Wiltz Vice, Fanny Broussard and Kenneth Vice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilda and Johnny Vice, a son, Keith Vice, and his siblings, Eula Bourque, Hubert Vice and John Allen Vice.
The family will receive friends at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 300 Pere Megret St, Abbeville, at 10:00 am on January 3, 2020, and a rosary will be recited at 10:30 am.

California Judge temporarily blocks ban that would harm Louisiana alligator industry

BATON ROUGE – A federal judge in California has issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting enforcement of that state’s effort to ban the sale and importation of alligator and crocodile products, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced Friday (Dec. 27).
California’s ban, which would devastate Louisiana’s lucrative alligator product industry, was scheduled to go into effect on Jan.1, 2020. Louisiana officials also worried this ban would harm coastal conservation efforts associated with the maintenance of alligator habitats.
The Louisiana Attorney General’s office filed the lawsuit earlier this month in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California to prohibit the ban from taking effect at the request of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. The federal court will hear the Commission’s motion for a preliminary injunction on April 24, 2020.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said, “The temporary restraining order is the first step in protecting Louisiana’s alligator industry, which creates jobs, supports our economy and contributes to much-needed coastal restoration efforts.”
Commission Chairman Al Sunseri said, “I am encouraged to see the court is taking a hard look at the irreparable harm California’s alligator ban will impose on our industry and Louisiana’s coastal conservation efforts. I hope this order gives the industry the confidence it needs to know that we are fighting for it.”
Louisiana’s alligator industry, under the guidance of LDWF and its restoration programs, has brought the alligator population from near extinction to nearly 3 million alligators in the wild and on farms in Louisiana.
LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said, “I hope the courts will understand the unique combination of the industry’s effort to care for the alligator population and the need to be good stewards of the environment where the alligators live.”
Any person who is subject to enforcement of Section 653o in violation of the temporary restraining order is encouraged to report the incident to Deputy Solicitor General Scott St. John, stjohnj@ag.louisiana.gov. The case is captioned Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission v. Becerra , No. 2:19-cv-02488-KJM-CKD (E.D. Cal).
