Jerome Puyau will no longer have the superintendent title in front of his name. He will, however, be the new school district's "consultant for the new superintendent" for the next nine months. His salary will be $12,000 a month until September of 2020.

Puyau is no longer superintendent; but will collect a $12,000 a month check from the school district

School Board, Puyau reach an agreement to end fighting, lawsuits

Superintendent Jerome Puyau era has ended with the Vermilion Parish School Board; however, he will still be employed with the Vermilion Parish School system and will be collecting a $12,000 a month salary for the next nine months.
At Thursday’s meeting, by a vote of 8-0, the school board has agreed to accept an offer ironed out between Puyau’s lawyer and the school board lawyer.
Bob Hammonds, the school board’s attorney, read to the public what the settlement agreement is.
First, Puyau has to submit two letters to the school board in the next three days. One letter will say that he is resigning as the Vermilion Parish School superintendent immediately. The second letter will say that he will retire from the school district on Sept. 28, 2020.
Here are the terms the school board and Puyau have agreed on:
• Puyau will step down as the superintendent of the parish, but he will continue to be employed by the school system until Sept. 28, 2020.
• Puyau will continue to draw his salary of $12,000 a month until Sept. 28, 2020 (the date he can retire with 30 years), and remain in the state retirement system. His newly created job title will be “Consultant to the new superintendent.” He will assist the new superintendent for the next nine months.
• Puyau will be paid by the parish school system $15,600 for a vehicle reimbursement that he never got when he signed his new contract two years ago.
• Puyau will also receive $20,000 from the school district to help pay his attorney fees.
• By agreeing to these terms, both parties agree not to sue one another in the future.
• All the lawsuits between Puyau and the school board will be dropped.
• If Puyau signs the agreement, it will become official, immediately.
The total cost to the Vermilion Parish taxpayers to hire Puyau as a “consultant” for the next nine months will be $108,600.
Puyau was not at Thursday’s school board meeting.
The School Board and Puyau released a statement that was read by Hammonds.
“Superintendent Puyau and the school board members have decided it would be in everyone’s interest to resolve our differences in an amicable fashion to better focus our attention and the resources of the school system educating public school children in the parish.”
The statement also said no school members or Puyau would not comment about the agreement reached Thursday night.
Paul Hebert will act as the superintendent until the position becomes open.

Driver Succumbs to Injuries Received in Single-Vehicle Crash

IBERIA PARISH – On December 10, 2019, shortly after 11:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 85 north of College Road in Jeanerette.
The crash ultimately took the life of 77-year-old Raphael Vallot of Jeanerette.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo driven by Vallot was traveling south on LA Hwy 85. For unknown reasons, his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, entered a ditch, and overturned several times before coming to rest in a private driveway.
Vallot, who was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, was transported to a Lafayette area hospital for medical treatment.
On December 17, 2019, Raphael Vallot succumbed to his injuries sustained during the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Police wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be properly restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. The decision not to wear a seat belt can have deadly consequences. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear a seat belt.

People can place ornaments on the Memory Tree this Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Abbeville.

Memory Tree honors Sydney Colomb; families can remember loved ones

Sydney Colomb died in early 2018.
Her memory lives on with her family members every day. Now, a gesture by her family members has helped hundreds of families remember their loved ones.
“My niece was killed in a wreck by a drunk driver,” said Kady Guillory, Sydney’s aunt.
“My family and I got together with the United Methodist Church to start a memory tree in honor of Sydney.
“We knew the holidays would be the hardest.”
During the past two years, a Memory Tree in honor of Sydney Colomb has been set up at the United Methodist Church in Abbeville. The Memory Tree has been up this year since the Abbeville Christmas Stroll. Hundreds of ornaments with names have been placed on the tree.
There will be another opportunity for people to place names on the Memory Tree. That will take place this Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The church is located at 213 N. State Street.
“The first year about 350 ornaments were decorated in memory of their loved one,” Guillory said. “Hearing their stories was comforting on both sides. This is our second year and I remember names from last year so it makes us happy that people have returned!”
“People think it’s neat that we decided to do this!”
It is certainly something special for Sydney’s family.
“It warms my heart that we can come together to honor the memory of someone that is dear to us,” Guillory said. “No one likes to talk about death. Sydney was taken too soon from us. She had lots of ambition in life and I couldn’t wait to see where she would go. As a little girl, she thought she was a princess literally. Her mom and her nanny trained her to be one from living fancy to waving like one! Our hearts mourn for her everyday, her mom, her grandparents, her sisters and their children, her aunts, her cousins, her family and friends miss her so much! I hope that she is looking down on us, watching over us until we see her again!!!”
