Couple to exchange vows at Rip Van Winkle Gardens in New Iberia

Jeff and Laura Floyd of Abbeville, LA are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Miss Cree Lauren Floyd of Abbeville, LA to Zachary Joseph Mire of Erath, LA.
The bride’s grandparents are Wade Floyd and the late Bettye Floyd of Gulf Shores, AL, Elizabeth Wester and the late Cleve Wester of Albany, GA and the late Greg Kirby of Rome, GA.
Cree is a 2014 graduate of Vermilion Catholic High School. She attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Degree. She is currently employed with Gulf Crown Seafood Co., Inc.
Zachary is the son of Stacey Mire of Abbeville, LA and Hubert Mire of Erath, LA. His grandparents are Beverly Suire and the late Clancy Suire of Erath, LA and the late Hubert and Shirley Mire of Banker, LA.
Zachary graduated from Erath High School in 2009. He attended LSU and graduated in 2013 and LSU Health Shreveport and graduated in 2018. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree.He is currently employed by Acadiana Physical Therapy in Lafayette, LA.
The couple plan to exchange their vows during a ceremony on Saturday, March 7 at The Rip Van Winkle Gardens in New Iberia.

Georgia Lee “Joe” Bertrand

ABBEVILLE — Memorial services for Georgia Lee “Joe” Bertrand, 93, will be held Thursday December 12, 2019, at 2:00 PM in David Funeral Home, with Deacon Tim Marcantel officiating.
Visitation will be held Thursday December 12, 2019 from 1:00 PM until time of services. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery.
Ms Georgia was a Graduate of the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Alexandria, and was Nursing Director of Surgery at Erath Hospital.
Survivors include son Mark Bertrand and husband Peter Pierce of San Rafael CA; brother in law C.J. Bertrand of Abbeville and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ms. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband Hugh J. Bertrand; her daughter Karen Ann Bertrand, parents John and Alzina Dyson Lee; and her siblings Israel and Peter Lee, Clementine Lee, Odelia Thibodeaux, Leontine Moss, Evy Langlnais, and Lucille Melancon.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice of Acadiana, Eastridge Nursing Center, Senior Helpers of Lafayette and Dr, Ronald Lahasky and staff. Also a very special thanks to Dorothy Lee, Christine Denis, Cindy Guidry, Bonnie Hollier, Betty Wilson.

Chester J. Smith, Sr.

ABBEVILLE – A Private Funeral Service will be held for Mr. Chester J. Smith, Sr., 89, at David Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Mausoleum.
A native of Erath and a resident of Abbeville, Mr. Smith died at 1:17PM on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at his residence. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was the owner of Chester Smith Marine; he was also involved with several other companies in the marine industry. Mr. Chester enjoyed playing bouree’, collecting antique cars, going to his camp, and being on the water, especially shrimping. He loved having a good time and be with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne Naquin Smith of Abbeville; a son, Chester J. Smith, II and his fiancée Estelle Mergist of Erath; three daughters, Mona Stika and her husband Kurt of Abbeville, Deanna Broussard and Randall Mendoza of Erath, and Janice Smith of Youngsville; seven grandchildren, Tobias Falgout and his wife Tina, Brandon Falgout and his wife Lindsey, Brett Broussard, Erika Vasquez, Trey Broussard and his wife Maci, Chester J. “C.J.” Smith, III, and Ashton Joseph Smith; and two great grandchildren, Parker J. Falgout and Tobias Falgout.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claiborne Smith and Eugenie LeBlanc Vincent; two sisters, Eula Dartez and Lilly Viator; and a grandchild, Ashley Kaye Smith.
Serving as pallbearers will be Brett Broussard, Trey Broussard, Tobias Falgout, Brandon Falgout, Glenn Broussard, and Saade Bou-Mikael.

Food Drive is this Tuesday in Abbeville

Helps Christian Service Center

Every year, the Christian Service Center (CSC) participates in the Food Net for Families Food Drive in Acadiana.
The food drive is this Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Super 1 Foods located at 2210 Veterans Memorial Dr. in Abbeville. Volunteers will be collecting donations from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The food collected at Super 1 will go directly to the CSC and provide assistance for anyone in need living in Vermilion Parish.
The Christian Service Center would like to thank all members of the community who have contributed food, time, prayer and monetary donations.
“The generous support of local schools, organizations and individuals keeps us open,” said Marcelo Davis, Director of Operations.
For more than 40 years, the Christian Service Center has been a place residents of Vermilion Parish can find a safe place to get assistance with food, utilities as well as spiritual and emotional support. Recently, the CSC Team began offering parenting classes, participants receive lunch and a voucher for free diapers or wipes following the class.
“Its a program called Earn While Your Learn" Marcelo Davis said. "We hope to not only provide food and supplies needed, but offer opportunities for our residents to learn something that will help them live a more successful family life.”
The CSC provides 60 to 100 hot meals daily for anyone who is hungry in addition to over 500 families a month who pick up groceries. Mothers, fathers, grandparents those who are employed and those who are not come seeking assistance at the CSC.
“Sometimes people are in crisis,” Davis said, “and just need help getting back up on their feet. We are so grateful our community supports us, so we can continue to provide excellent service ...we are only as strong as our weakest link" Davis added. "The food collected during our food drive helps us for several months. Every little amount helps.
“It’s always inspiring to see even our former and some current clients come and give.”
If you would like to donate, stop by Super1Foods in Abbeville between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Dec. 10. There will also be a photo opportunity if your organization contributes food or funds. It costs approximately $425 a day to keep the doors of the CSC open. Items needed most : dried beans, canned meats, canned soups, pasta, pasta sauce, nuts, cereal, boxed diners, oatmeal, peanut butter, crackers, diapers, wipes and hygiene items are also excepted.
Davis said the Christian Service Center Team would like to thank the community for all of the ongoing support from the past, the present and in the future.

Erath man Succumbs to Injuries in Iberia Parish Crash

NEW IBERIA – At approximately 3:45 pm on November 28th, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single-vehicle crash on US 90 near Ross Road in Iberia Parish. The crash ultimately took the life of 23-year-old Kayleb Leblanc of Erath.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Leblanc was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on US 90. For unknown reasons, his vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.
Leblanc was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On December 7th, State Police was notified that Leblanc succumbed to his injuries on December 6th. Impairment is unknown and this crash remains under investigation.

Frances Nunez Hebert

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 9, 2019 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church for Frances Nunez Hebert, 84, who passed away on December 6, 2019.
Reverend Paul Bienvenu, Pastor, will be the Celebrant of the Mass.
Burial will take place in the St. Alphonsus Mausoleum.
Frances, a resident of Maurice, was the daughter of the late Archie Nunez and the former Allie LaBove.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Doris Andrew Hebert; three daughters, Janie Brown and her husband, Jimmy, Becky Perry and her husband, Phillip, and Kristi Lucas and her husband, Mark; ten grandchildren, Jamie Thomas, Chris Brown, Brian Brown, Katie Gauthier, Aimee Perry, Joshua Toups, Matthew Toups, Jordan Toups, Kyle Lucas and Brenna Lucas; eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Phyllis Swire and her husband, Ralph.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, infant Janie Nunez and Myra "Puddin" LeBoeuf and two brothers, Wayne Nunez and James "Bozo" Nunez.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home – Maurice on Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM on Sunday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue Monday from 9:00 AM until the time of service.

John Bennett Hulin

ERATH — A Mass of Christian Burial for John Bennett Hulin, 88, will be at 11:00AM Saturday December 7, 2019 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Manny Fernandez officiating. Interment will follow in Bancker Cemetery in Henry.
Visitation will be at David Funeral Home of Erath Friday December 6, 2016 from 4:00PM until 9:00PM with recitation of the rosary at 7:00PM. Visitation will resume Saturday from 8:00AM until service time.
John, a lifelong resident of Henry passed away Thursday December 5, 2019 in his residence. He was a Farmer, worked for Prairie Gregg Drainage and was a member of the Henry Volunteer Fire Dept. for 42 years.
He is survived by his sons, Steve Hulin and wife Suzanne of Leroy, Fabian Hulin and wife Gloria of Henry, and Duell Peter Hulin and wife Denise of Henry, his grandchildren, Shanna Meaux, Shane Hulin, Stacy Broussard, Crystal Kirkconnell, Ashley Eichorn, Zachary Hulin, and Caleb Hulin, great grandchildren, Katy Meaux, Allison Meaux, Hunter Hulin, Gabrielle Hulin, Collin Broussard, Maddie Broussard, Mia Broussard, Chelsie Kirkconnell, William KIrkconnell, Sadie Kirkconnell, Audrey Eichorn, Bennett Eichorn, Catlyn Hulin, and Easton Hulin, great great grandchildren, Whitley and Walker Broussard.
He is preceded in death by his wife Eula Mae Duhon Hulin, his parents, J. Duell and Idelle Dugas Hulin, a brother Edward Hulin and a grandson Eddie Hulin.
Readers are Shanna Meaux and Deborah Eckholdt. Gift bearers are Crystal KIrkconnell, Ashley Eichorn, and Stacy Broussard.Music provided by Katy Meaux.

Harvest Time Christian Academy will present “I’ll be home for Christmas“ at Abbeville high school this Friday and Saturday.
The performances will be under the direction of Joy Broussard. Broussard has been the choir director at harvest Time Christian Academy for 16 years and also serves as CYT Vermilion’s chapter coordinator.
The annual Christmas musical at HTCA is a wonderful long standing tradition for our family, friends and entire community.
“You especially won’t want to miss this year,” Broussard said. “Set in the 1940s, this show is packed with quality sets, beautiful costumes, high energy, romance, dancing, and incredible vocals!”
Admission is free to everyone. Donations will be accepted at the door. Invite your family and friends to attend this beautiful Christmas musical that is perfect for the whole family!
Performance times are Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Abbeville high school.

Back-to-back champs: North Vermilion wins another LHSAA title

The North Vermilion High Dance team competed at the LHSAA Spirit Championship in the Game Day category and won the state title for a second year making them back to back champions of Division II.
In the Game Day category teams must demonstrate 3 components; a Fight Song routine, a Sideline routine, and a Field Performance routine.
One judge noted, “Patriots understand how to perform for their fans!,” which sums up exactly what the team aims to do!
NV Dreams not only placed first in their 3A/4A division but their score also ranked them 2nd among all teams across all divisions. The NV Dreams plan to attend UDA regional competition in Hammond next month and are set to travel to Orlando in February for UDA Nationals. The team would like to thank their principal, Tommy Byler, for his continuous encouragement which allows the program to strive and compete. They also want to acknowledge school board rep, Mr. Chris Gautreaux, for recognizing the team’s growth and achievements. NV Dreams love representing their community with a state win!
