UL Lafayette honors Blanco’s public service with creation of policy center

LAFAYETTE — Planning is underway for the establishment of the Kathleen Babineaux Blanco Public Policy Center at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Blanco is a UL Lafayette alumna and the only woman to serve as Louisiana governor.
The policy center and archive will house Blanco’s gubernatorial papers. It also will contribute interdisciplinary, independent research to a host of public policy areas, including criminal justice reform, poverty and economic opportunity, governmental ethics, and education.

The bridge has been closed since June 20.

Abbeville's Downtown bridge expected to reopen next Wednesday

Despite rumors of a lengthy closure, the bridge in downtown Abbeville is expected to reopen next week.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) closed the bridge on June 20 to make repairs. The initial estimate for closure had the work completed after three weeks.
Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said he spoke with Rep. Bob Hensgens Tuesday afternoon. Hensgens spoke with a Bill Oliver of the DOTD about the bridge earlier in the day. Oliver told Hensgens that the bridge is likely to be reopened on July 18.

Kaplan Mayor Mike Kloesel

New Kaplan Mayor issues appointments

Kaplan’s new mayor, Mike Kloesel, called for a special meeting last Tuesday to make appointments for his four year term.
In a standing room only crowd, four appointments breezed through the nominations and were unanimously voted on. They include:
•Kaplan Herald - official publication.
•City attorney - Calvin Woody Woodruff.
•City auditor - Kolder, Champagne and Slaven.

Committee chairs named; Touchet is Mayor Pro Tem

Officials with the City of Abbeville did not take long to get the wheels of the new administration rolling.
After being sworn in on June 29, the new Abbeville City Council met for its first regular meeting on Tuesday.
Along with Councilman Francis Touchet Jr. being voted as the city’s new Mayor Pro Tem, Mayor Mark Piazza appointed members of the Council to various committees.
“At the beginning of every term,” Piazza explained, “it is customary for the mayor to appoint committees. Normally, each councilman has been a chairman of an individual committee.

watermelons until the last one is gone.

Sweet fundraiser: American Legion selling watermelons to support scholarship

The American Legion have been selling Sugar Town Watermelons since Sunday to raise money for their Scholarship Fund.
The Scholarship fund is something the Legion does annually, which this is one of many ways the public could help in creating this fund.
The Scholarship fund raises $2,000 and any extra money raised goes into the maintenance fund. If you would like to, you can do so by buying a watermelon or two at the American Legion Vermilion Post 29 building.
