Abbeville High’s Kim is Kiwanis Student of the Month

Melissa Kim is a leader at Abbeville High School, on many levels.
However, it is one level upon which Kim had an eye from nearly day one at AHS, when she became part of the school’s marching band.
“Ever since I joined the marching band,” Kim said, “I had this passion to become a drum major.”
Kim’s years of work and patience have paid off, as she is now the drum major, the leader of the Abbeville High band.

Golf play at Vermilion Oaks will stop at the end of October.

Vermilion Oaks Country Club in Abbeville to suspend operations on Oct. 29

What has been a fixture in the lives of so many in Vermilion Parish for nearly nine decades will be taking a leave at the end of October.
The owners of Vermilion Oaks Country Club in Abbeville, formerly the Abbeville Country Club, have announced their intention to suspend operations on Oct. 29, 2017. The duration of the suspension has not been set.
The course originally opened in 1929 as a nine-hole course, expanding to 18 holes in 1996.
The Broussard family took over operation of the course in 2015. Outside factors have had an impact during the past couple of years.

Local lineman returns from Florida after helping restore power

A Kaplan man was one of the thousands of crews from throughout the country who was recently deployed to Florida to help restore power to a portion of the state without electricty after Hurricane Irma.
Irma’s storm surges and hurricane winds had a catastrophic impact on some parts of Florida. So much so, that linemen crews from all corners of the country were there helping to restore power to the millions without it.
Seth Demette, a lineman for 11 years who works with LUS, was among the 18 crew member team sent to Tallahassee, Florida to give a helping hand.

Several events are scheduled for Friday. The Open House at Delcambre High School from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Pep Rally at Delcambre High School stadium starting at 2 p.m. The Alumni Tea is in Delcambre High School’s gym starting at 5 p.m. The presentation of the homecoming court will be before the game at 6:20 p.m.
