The recent death of Lafayette Police Cpl. Michael Middlebrook has sparked questions that are beginning to be asked by Abbeville police officers and firemen.
On Oct. 1, Middlebrook was shot and killed in the line of duty. Middlebrook is the first Lafayette Police officer killed in the line of duty since the 1960s.
He was killed on Oct. 1 at Big Boy Discount Zone, a convenience store on Moss Street, when he responded to a call about a shooting. He is survived by his wife, a 3-year-old daughter and two step-daughters.

Attempting to get through to Abbeville City Hall has become much easier.
Abbeville officials recently had a new phone system installed at City Hall. The main number for the city is (337) 893-8550. When citizens called that number on the previous system, an automated process required several steps to get through to various departments.
“The City of Abbeville had been using a phone system that was old, inefficient, cumbersome and most of all frustrating to city employees and especially our citizens,” Councilman Brady Broussard Jr. said.

MAURICE — Work is expected to begin early in the new year to repair damage to the Village of Maurice City Hall caused by the historic flood in August of 2016.
The Maurice Board of Aldermen authorized the advertisement for bids in September. The bid date has been set for Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Any bids for the work will have to be in by that time.
