Vermilion Parish Teachers of the year announced

During the same week students went through the interview process for their top yearly accolades, the Vermilion Parish School System announced the honorees who help make those students so successful.
Earning recognition as Vermilion Parish Teachers of the Year are Herod Elementary School’s Darbi Conca, Erath Middle School’s Amy Suire and North Vermilion High School’s Jacqueline Alleman.
Conca is in her third year as a third-grade teacher at Herod Elementary in Abbeville.

Piles of dirt have been placed on the bridge to block traffic from crossing on South John Hardy Drive.

DOTD closes bridge on South John Hardy Drive in Abbeville

Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza received a surprise phone call from the Department of Transportation (DOTD) about the closing of a bridge in Abbeville.
DOTD informed the mayor that the small bridge on South John Hardy Drive, near the Lafitte Shopping Center, will be closed indefinitely.
Piazza said, according to DOTD’s inspection, the bridge did not meet weight payload standards, so it had to be closed until it is repaired.
The city is responsible for the cost of upgrading and repairing the bridge.

Rev. Deacon Madge McLain is the new face at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

McLain new deacon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Abbeville

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church welcomed Rev. Deacon Madge McLain to Abbeville a little more than three months ago.
It is another stop on the journey, one that has brought her through various jobs and eventually to the church.
“In August of this year,” McLain said, “I was ordained as a transitional deacon, a ministry that must be fulfilled for a period of six months. In February of 2018, I will be made a priest in the Episcopal church and my hope is to continue at St. Paul’s for many years.”
McLain’s early years took her to many places.

Sales tax collection in Vermilion Parish dips year after flood

There was a drop in sales tax collection for the month of September but it may not be because the economy is dipping. It could be due to the 2016 August flood.
In the past, when Vermilion Parish has had floods from storm surges or massive rains, Vermilion Parish sees in a spike in spending because of rebuilding or repairing of flooded homes.
