LCA too much for VC in Division IV finals

ALEXANDRIA – The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles live on high expectations that routinely place them in championship contention.
They were in position again on Friday, meeting district foe Lafayette Christian in the Division IV LHSAA girls basketball title at Rapides Parish Coliseum.
And VC, which won state crowns in 1999 and 2013 under coach Kim Guidry, featured an experienced squad with four seniors who had been to three previous Final Four events.
But poor shooting by the Lady Eagles, combined with a powerful virtuoso effort from LCA’s Bre’ Porter, enabled the Lady Knights to score a 48-33 victory for a third straight state title.
“We played with heart, and we played hard,” said Guidry, whose team finished with a 27-6 record. “You can’t shoot 23 percent and expect to win against a team like this. LCA has the total package.”
VC hit 12-of-53 shots – 22.6 percent – including 2-of-19 beyond the 3-point arc. The Eagles did manage 7-of-10 at the free throw line.
Ainsley Mallet totaled 12 points to lead Vermilion Catholic,
“It was a great feeling at the beginning to be playing in the title game, and we fought until the end,” said Mallet, who bid farewell along with other seniors Jay Demouchet, Anne-Catherine Gallet and Emma LeBlanc.
VC was primed for a

championship effort, featuring a sticky, shifting defense that gave LCA problems at first. Mallet hit a pair of short shots and LeBlanc scored over Taylor for an 11-10 edge after the opening period.
But that 11-10 was the last VC lead of the contest.
Tamara Johnson, whose 18 points led all scorers, opened the second quarter with a drive of the baseline for 12-11. A pair of Johnson free throws upped it to 14-11 before a steal and layup by Demoucet crept the Eagles within 14-13.
But then Autumn Chassion banked in a 3-point bomb from left of the key, as if to remind her foes that resistance was futile.
With a 17-5 quarter, the Knights built a commanding 27-16 lead.
“We tried three or four different things,” Guidry said. “But then they started just lobbing the ball over us. They went with the big girl.”
That would be Porter, the game’s Most Outstanding Player after she grabbed a demoralizing 20 rebounds – 10 offense, 10 defense – and tallied 15 points. She was virtually unstoppable, especially in the third period when she cleared 9 caroms and chipped in 6 points.
In one sequence, she had four rebounds to keep things alive until Johnson scored on a follow-up.
“In my four years of high school basketball, I’ve never had a game like that,” Porter said. “As the game wore on, I felt I should step up, and I did.”
Somehow, VC was outscored just 8-7 in the third quarter despite Porter’s heroics, a tribute to tenacity. The Eagles lost 58-28 to LCA in the regular season but chopped that margin in half on Friday.
Porter is one of only two seniors on LCA’s roster, marking the Knights as the team to watch in 2020.
“We have started a dynasty in the Acadiana area and the state,” Chassion said. “We’ll have the same game plan next year.”
“It’s been an unbelievable experience, to come as far as this program has come,” said LCA coach Errol Rogers, who added, “We’ll play anybody, any time, anywhere.”
Guidry, meanwhile, wouldn’t swap her roster.
“I told them they had already won, just by making it to the championship game again,” Guidry said. “Then, once you realize that, go play. It doesn’t matter if we have something to add to the trophy case.
“These four seniors are a special group. People don’t get to see the life lessons they’ve learned, things that they’ll take with them. I can’t say how much they mean to us.
“I wouldn’t trade them for the world.”

Madison Prep does not lose in the playoffs. They are 24-1 since 2013.

Madison Prep blocks Abbeville from advancing

BATON ROUGE - Beating Madison Prep’s Chargers in the basketball playoffs is almost an impossible task.
Since the 2013 playoffs, the Chargers have lost only once in the high school playoffs, and that was in the Class 1A finals in 2014.
In 2013, Madison Prep won the Class B state title.
In 2014, Madison Prep finished second in Class A.
In 2015, Madison Prep won the Class A state title.
In 2016, Madison Prep won the Class 2A state title.
In 2017, Madison Prep won the Class 2A state title again.
In 2018, Madison Prep won the Class 3A state title.
With six years in the playoffs, Madison Prep is 24-1.
Despite the overwhelming odds, the Abbeville Wildcats gave the Chargers a scare for 3 1/2 quarters in Friday night’s Class 3A quarterfinal game.
The Wildcats ended a great season, falling to Madison 57-45.

A minute into the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were only down 43-42 and were thinking upset.
However, in a four-minute span, that upset bid went out of the window when Abbeville point guard Jurvontae Decuir, who had 23 points, fouled out of the game and Abbeville’s second best player, Tyrese Sam, left the game with a hurt knee.
With Decuir out of the game, AHS was only down 47-43 with four minutes to play. However, in the following four minutes, Abbeville was outscored 10-2.
Abbeville head coach Berwick Hamilton said his team was in the game up until the final four minutes.
“We did not play well after Jurvontae fouled out,” said Hamilton. “That was the difference. After he went out of the game, it was downhill.”
Abbeville’s game plan all year was to attack the goal. The Wildcats were successful and used the same game plan on Friday. On Friday, the Wildcats were somewhat successful but also ran into tall trees every time they would drive towards the goal.
Madison Prep’s Percy Daniels stood 6-7, and Eddy Johnson was 6-3. Madison Prep had 16 blocked shots in the game.
The Wildcats led 32-31 at the 5:32 mark in the third period. Abbeville stepped up its defense, causing turnovers. Their aggressive defensive play also hurt.
Senior Davontae Promise, who had two points and six rebounds, fouled out for AHS with four minutes left in the third period.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Sam (8 total points) and Tarrius Campbell (5 total points) tied the game 38-38 with two minutes to play in the third quarter.
The Wildcats carried that momentum into the fourth period until the four-minute mark when Decuir fouled out.
“We gave it our best shot,” said Hamilton. “This is a tough place to win. I am proud of our guys. I am also proud of the fans. I think we had more fans than them. The kids were excited to see that.”

The Abbeville Police Department has a new web page, www.abbevillepd.com.

Abbeville Police Department launches new website, offering more ways to provide anonymous tips

Technology helps bring us all closer together, making the world a smaller place.
Abbeville Chief of Police Bill Spearman is using technology to help bring citizens and the department closer together to make the city a safer place.
The Abbeville Police Department has launched a new web page, www.abbevillepd.com. Through the page, citizens can locate information on each of the officers with the department as well as supervisors of each department within the APD.
One of the most important aspects of the new page is that visitors are one click away from being able to leave an anonymous tip about any crime. People can use a link on the page to submit tips to police. Tips can also come through the APD’s Facebook page. Those options, along with the tips line (892-6777), are something Spearman said he is hoping will allow people to feel comfortable when providing tips to the police department, as neither their names nor contact information are not necessary when using the web page link or calling the phone line.
“This is completely anonymous,” Spearman said. “This will hopefully make people feel more at ease.”
When using the tips line, phone messages are immediately forwarded to Lt. Jonathan Touchet, the APD public information officer.
“I can then get that information from the tip to the appropriate person to follow up on it,” Touchet said. “We are trying to alleviate any apprehension people may have about providing police with information. Their personal information will not get out.”
Spearman said that is something he heard from citizens while running for election last year.
“Some people said they were not comfortable talking to the police,” Spearman said. “They were worried about their names getting out. We don’t want them to feel that way.
“We are working hard to make sure they have confidence in the police department and give us a hand.”
On the top of the web page is the line, “Only together, can we keep Abbeville safe.” Spearman said it’s a line he believes strongly in.
“We’re getting there,” Spearman said. “We are trying to work with the public to solve these crimes. Information that people provide can be so valuable. We’re reaching out to the general public to let them know that we are giving them broader ways of giving us information, without having to come to the police station.”
