Homegoing services will be conducted on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 11:00 at the Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church for Bro. Wilton Allen, 92.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the church. Pastor Mideate Derouen will be the officiant. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery .
Bro. Wilton Allen, also known by his close family and friends as “Weetan” was called to his Heavenly home on Monday morning, December 11 at 12:01 am. In Beaumont, Texas. He was a former resident of Abbeville, but for the last eight years had resided with his devoted daughter, Alice and her family. He was born to the late Joseph Allen and Nolia Gilbert Allen in Milton, Louisiana on February 10, 1925.
Bro Wilton was married to the late Roberta Brailey Allen until the time of her death. They were married for over 50 years. To this union, three children were born. “Weetah” love life and enjoyed fishing, gardening, watching sports such as baseball on television,. He also enjoyed cooking and eating. His grandchildren remembers the many delicious meals they were fed when they went to the house. He became a member of the Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church in September of 1995, and served there as a Deacon until his health began to fail.
He worked at the Louisa Syrup Mill in Louisa , LA and Gulf Coast Pre Mix Mud Company for many years. Later, he retired medically from Dowell Corporation.
Bro. Allen leaves a legacy of memories to his son, Rev. John Edward Allen (Myra) of Abbeville and his daughter, Alice Elaine Guidry (Wilfred) of Beaumont, Texas; five grand daughters, Tara Allen-Williams (Dirk) of Eastvale, CA, Jenissa Allen St.Julien (Christopher) of Abbeville, Roberta Auriel Guidry of Spring, Tx, Julaine Allen Gray (William) and Janae Acacia Allen, both of Abbeville; Two Grandsons, Wilfred Paul Guidry III and Johnny Allen Guidry of Beaumont, Texas; one sister, Dorothy Perro of Port Arthur, Texas Sixteen great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Bro. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Nolia Allen; his wife, Roberta B. Allen; his son, Wilfred Allen; three brothers, Dalton Allen Sr. , Nolton Mitchell, and Neffrey Allen.

ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 15, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Otis Richard, 86, who died Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at his residence. He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Reverend Louis Richard officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Dennis Stevens, Nathaniel Davenport, Bruce Sonnier, Aaron Vaughan, Wayne Romero, and Ronnie Romero.
Otis served his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. “Smokey” was founder of Richard’s Meat Market; a family owned business, one of Abbeville’s few remaining independent butcher shops.
Otis is survived by his wife of 61 years, Annie Bell Vaughan Richard; children, Charlotte R. Hebert and her husband John, Jr. of Youngsville, Jackie R. Klein and her husband Greg of Lafayette, Neal Richard and his wife Kelly of Abbeville, and Felecia R. Bonin and her husband Jerod of Jennings; eleven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Joyce Richard of Youngsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ovey B. Richard, Sr. and the former Henrietta Libersat; and siblings, Ovide Richard, Sr., Henry Richard, Eula R. Dubois, Adea Richard, Louise R. Stevens, and Ovey B. Richard, Jr.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Thursday, December 14, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 6:30 PM; Friday, December 15, 2017 from 8:00 AM until 9:45 AM when the procession will depart for the church.

The two teams who won this year’s, and possibly last year’s, Parish Tournament are not the normal team to win the parish tournament.
The Vermilion Catholic boys, the No. 3 seed, stunned the No. 1 Abbeville 58-37 in the finals, while the No. 1 seed North Vermilion Lady Patriots beat No. 3 Kaplan 41-32 in the finals.
The Lady Patriots had not won the parish since 2009, and it has been at least 10 years and possibly longer since the Eagles won the parish tournament.
The Eagles, who are now 7-0, whipped the Wildcats playing team ball.
“I am very proud of them,” said VC head coach Mike McCoy. “They played with a lot of heart. “I though they did a good job of channeling all the hype and emotion of the rivalries within our parish into some good execution on both sides of the ball.”
The Wildcats came out gunning in the first quarter and led 12-4 at the end of the quarter.
Then, team-ball kicked in during the second quarter and six different players scored in the quarter. Travien Lane and Ethan Lege both made five points that quarter.
The Eagles were up 23-22 at half time.
Abbeville was never in the game in the second half.
The Wildcats got to within two points on Zontre Scott’s five points, 34-32, with 2:11 to play in the third period.
From that point on, it was all VC.
J.T. Lege’s layup put the Eagles ahead 43-33 at the start of the fourth period.
Lane helped the Eagles to stretch the lead to 53-34.
Scott would foul out late in the fourth quarter for AHS. He led the team with 13 points. Tyrese Sam added 12 and Robert Staggs had 8 for AHS.
VC would outscore AHS 35-15 in the second half.
VC had three players score in double digits.
Kris Constantine led with 15 points. In the game he was 6 of 7 at the free throw line, all in the fourth quarter.
Ethan Lege made 13 points and Lane had 10 points and 10 rebounds. JT finished with 9.

Lady Patriots take care of Kaplan

The Lady Patriots won a rare Vermilion Parish tournament title Sunday afternoon thanks to Kayler Walker, who took over the game early.
Walker finished with 22 points to lead NV over Kaplan.
No other Lady Patriot scored in doubled digits.
Kaylee Lopez, who is NV’s top scorer this year, had 8 points. Alaina Dartez made five, followed by Kennedy Trahan (4) and O’Leria Bolden (2).
Rylie Frick kept Kaplan in the game with her 14 points. She was 8 of 10 at the charity stripe.
Whitney Bouillion made eight and Leah Frick chipped in six.
Torri Riggs, who scored 28 against VC the night before was held scoreless.
Kaplan made it a game in the first half and went into half time tied 17-17.
In the third period, Walker and Dartez made jumpers to put the Lady Patriots ahead 21-17.
The Lady Pirates crawled back in the game and retook the lead 24-23 on Rylie’s inside shot.
In the final two minutes of the third frame, the Lady Patriots took control.
Walker scored four points and when the quarter was over, the Lady Patriots led 31-24.
Kaplan did cut it to 7 points with 1:44 left in the game.

Although no Vermilion Parish teams made it to the finals for the State Football Championship game this year, three Vermilion Parish players were recognized and received awards at the LHSAA State Championship game Friday night.
All three young men are members of the Erath High School Football Team and received the honor of Academic All-State as members of the 2017-2018 LHSAA All-Academic Composite Football Team. This award is presented for exemplary academic achievement by maintaining the highest Grade Point Average among all athletes during their academic career while participating in varsity high school athletics. All three young men have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout their high school career.
These young men not only represent Erath, but they are also the only players in the Parish to make the Academic All-State Composite Team.
Jean-Paul is the son of Francis & Kesha Touchet and the late Suzanne Alexander Touchet. Mason is the son of Nathan & Dana Granger. Payne is the son of Michael & Theresa Touchet.
