More than $172,300 raised during during Vermilion Parish 4-H Livestock Show

The 44th Annual Vermilion Parish 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was a great success.
It involved 197 young people who exhibited over 294 head of livestock (beef, sheep, goats, dairy, and swine) and 124 poultry entries. This event is organized by the LSU AgCenter Extension Service and was held Jan. 19-20, at the Cecil McCrory Exhibit Building in Abbeville. A large crowd was on hand to witness the skills of these 4-H’ers and to view the extensive exhibition of the highest quality stock in Vermilion Parish.

Vermilion Parish students on McNeese State University’s Honor Roll, President’s Lists

McNeese State University recently announced students who made President’s List and Honor Roll for the 2017 fall semester.
To be on the President’s Honor List an undergraduate student must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average or better while carrying at least 15 semester hours. A senior eligible for graduation but carrying less than 15 hours is also provided that student was on the President’s Honor List the previous semester.
The honor roll lists undergraduate students earning at least a 3.0 or B average while carrying 12 or more semester hours.

Abbeville man sentenced to 70 years in prison for production, possession of child pornography

United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced that a former Vermilion Parish middle school teacher was sentenced last week to 70 years in prison for making and possessing child pornography.
James Stacey Harber, 33, of Abbeville, La., previously of Ohio, was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell on three counts of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.
He was also sentenced to a lifetime of supervised release and is required to register as a sex offender.

Numbers being questioned in budget negotiations

After months of meetings that failed to yield compromises and threats of a gut-wrenching string of legislative sessions, Gov. John Bel Edwards has finally shared with lawmakers his top policy priorities and a doomsday budget proposal.
But some lawmakers who were involved with the big reveal during Monday’s meeting of the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget were unsure about one thing: the numbers.

UL Lafayette students from Vermilion Parish recognized on Fall 2017 President’s, Dean’s lists

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has released its President’s and Dean’s lists for the Fall 2017 semester.
Students recognized on the President’s List have earned a 3.8 GPA or better.
Dean’s List honorees have earned at 3.5 GPA or better.
To qualify for either list, students must be enrolled full-time.
