Gage Trahan

Gage Trahan continues baseball at Ark. Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK- Head Coach Chris Curry has announced his 2019 spring signing class. The 10 students-athletes will be joining the Little Rock baseball program in 2020 in the team’s attempt to build upon a record-setting 2019 season. One of those signees is Vermilion Catholic graduate Gage Trahan.
Little Rock, who plays in the Sun Belt Conference, finished 29-27 last year and 16-14 in the Sun Belt.
Trahan (5’10 170 pound, right- hand pitcher) transferring to Little Rock from LSU-Eunice, where he played prior to transferring.
“I think is a great move to come here and get better and grow as a student and as an athlete,” said Trahan.
He lettered for two years in Eunice under Little Rock baseball alum, Jeff Willis; where he helped the Bengals to a record of 110-14 over a two-year span to go along with a National Championship as a freshman in 2018. The team finished with a record of 59-6.
In 2019, he made 13 appearances out of the bullpen for LSU-Eunice. He struck out 24 opposing batters and only gave up 14 hits in 17 innings pitched.
Trahan made seven appearances in 2018, including three starts and finished with a 5-0 record and 2.35 ERA as a true freshman in Eunice. In 15.1 innings pitched, gave up only six hits and seven walks while striking out 22.
“Gage is a quick armed righty who throws a ton of strikes with an upper 80s to low 90s fastball and has a wipeout breaking ball. He is a great competitor and we look for him to make an immediate impact on the field and in the locker room,” Curry said
For two years while living in Eunice, Trahan was only 90 minutes from Abbeville. Now he is 5.5 hours away. He has two years to play at Little Rock.
“It is definitely going to take some time to adjust, but I think it is a good move for me to go out on my own and grow,” he added.

Letter to the Editor regarding Vermilion Parish School Board

Dear Editor:

I have been attending the VPSB meetings for most of the past three years. I'm seeing and hearing first hand all the foolishness that goes on at these meetings. I leave the meetings feeling embarrassed for our school system and parish.
Things are bad enough with trying to oust the Superintendent without Mr. Kibbie Pillette’s statement on our Abbeville Police department.
Saying if the Superintendent was black he would have already been arrested. That's after the Chief got opinions to not do anything. I have worked with the Chief and his department and can say that racism is not in play here. You should offer a public apology to the Chief and his department. (Shame on you Mr. Pillette for trying to start that kind of trouble in Abbeville). Even calling a protest at the school board office.
Rumor has it that no more than 3 or 4 attended. This was so unprofessional in many ways, especially you being a sitting school board member.
Another thing I'm asking is how much is the boards legal counsel costing the tax payers of Vermilion Parish? I understand a contract was signed by Mrs. Laura LeBouef, in fact I was at the meeting and saw you sign it, I was told it is also on video, then I heard it was shredded. So does the board have a legal contract or not? I've heard rumors that it's costing the VPSB anywhere between $200/hr to $275/hr plus travel time and expenses. Sometimes there are 2 attorneys there, are we paying for both of them? If so how much? Where is the transparency? What are you hiding? Is there a reason you are not telling we the people you work for? Transparency!!
Another investigation? Really? I guess you will continue looking till you hopefully get the results you want. Apparently Mr. Puyau is doing what he was hired to do, you seem to have a problem finding cause to fire him. Maybe there is no cause.
As I have said in my comments to the school board a few times, how much better would our Vermilion Parish School System be if all the time, money and energy being spent on getting rid of the Superintendent would be expended in supporting his efforts to make our system the best in the State.
Some members of our parish school board appear to have little regard for the law and what the law requires. Enough is enough and change has become a necessity. The power to end this situation lies with we, the people, we have to take back our school board. When the time is here, I urge you to vote accordingly.
Mrs. Laura LeBouef and Mr. Kibbie Pillette need to be removed from their positions as President and Vice President and also from the board itself.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up ("The Vermilion Way" so we can help the superintendent to defray some of his legal cost. This money will not go to the Superintendent at all. It will be paid to the legal defense team helping him. All monies will go to the defense not to the Superintendent.
It's time we, the public, come forward and help to stop this almost dictatorship we now have as President and Vice President of our School Board. Just because the board voted it does NOT mean that is can be done above the law.
Thanks for reading and remember all this in the next election. Let's take back our school board!

Myles Hutchinson gets ready to shoot a free throw for McNeese.

Hutchinson, McNeese play hoop in Bahamas

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese men’s basketball had quite the experience last week in the Bahamas where the Cowboys faced off against three of the island’s professional teams at the BBF Summer of Thunder event.
But there was more to the trip than just the winning, it was a valuable experience for everyone involved with the Cowboy program from the competition on the court to the team bonding off the floor.
“It was a phenomenal opportunity to represent McNeese State University in a foreign country,” said second year head coach Heath Schroyer. “It was an unbelievable experience from a cultural standpoint. I think our guys got a lot out of it and we got better as the week went on.
“We played against three professional teams. The team we played the first night had an average age of 31 and won their league championship last year. They lost to Temple on a last second shot the night before so they were a really talented team.”
NCAA rules state that teams can play out of the country once every four years and are allowed 10 practice days to prepare for such competition.
That’s a value Schroyer said you can’t put a price on.
“We went over there and got better. Having so many new guys getting real game experience, that really jump-started our season. Having the 10 days of practice, you can’t put a price or a value to what the trip meant to us as a team.”
In the three games (McNeese won two), returner Sha’Markus Kennedy and newcomer A.J. Lawson averaged 20 or more points per game – Kennedy with a 21.7 mark and Lawson at 20.7. Newcomer and sharp-shooter Dru Kuxhausen averaged 15.7 points a game while sinking 52 percent of his 3-point shots.
Returning all-conference player Roydell Brown led the way in rebounding with an 8.3 average.
Abbeville’s own Myles Hutchinson is a junior for McNeese. He averaged four points a game in the three games.
McNeese dropped the first game, 79-65, to the Commonwealth Bank Giants as Kennedy led the Cowboys with 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting while Lawson scored 21. Both notched double-digits in rebounds as well – Kennedy with 12 and Lawson 10.
As a team, the Cowboys connected on 54 percent of their shots from the floor (36 of 67) and held a 47-39 advantage on the glass.
The final game saw the Cowboys drum IBA Elite 114-72.
McNeese torched the nets with 59 percent shooting (42 of 71) including 15 of 25 from long range for 63 percent.
The Cowboys will return to the practice floor at the beginning of October when the official start to the 2019-20 season gets underway.

Timmie Melancon

Timmie Melancon announces candidacy for District 7 seat on BESE Board

As a teacher of English, Theatre, Public Speaking, and Debate, Timmie Melancon worked to instill the importance of strong communication skills in each and every student, believing that to be the key to success in life. Recognizing the lack of opportunities in theater for most of the high school students in Vermilion Parish, she created the performance group “Vermilion Players.”
Timmie was twice honored as Vermilion Parish’s Teacher of The Year. She was also a National Global Teacher finalist, which allowed her to travel to Brazil to study their education system. She also received the Louisiana Association of Educators Image Award, Louisiana High School Speech League Coach of the Year, and Delta Kappa Gamma Golden Apple Award as well as being recognized by our state legislators as an outstanding educator.
When we think about Louisiana Education, we must think about children and not parties. Everyone must be able to work together to give our students what they deserve. We were 49th in the nation when John White’s Reforms were put into place and this year we are still 49th. It is time for change!
Adopt New State Standards: Develop state standards that establish goals that are developmentally appropriate with emphasis on the foundations of early development.
Bring Control Back to Local Boards: Empower districts to choose their own evidence-based curriculum for their students’ needs.
Cut Standardized Testing in Half: Assessment will be used to inform students, parents and teachers exactly where improvement is needed.
Demand Oversight of Charter Schools: Develop an Oversight Committee for the public to audit their finances and ensure ethical compliance.
Formulate New Teacher Evaluations: Develop an evaluation process that is not punitive but instead uses the results of well-designed and informative assessments to provide support aimed at improving a teacher’s success.
