Andre LeBlanc wins VC’s 2019 Todd LaPorte Award

Vermilion Catholic graduate Todd LaPorte was the type of person who helped his community and school but did it behind the scene and did not let everyone know how or what he was contributing.
At the age of 53, Laporte passed away in March of 2019.
As way to keep his memory going, the LaPorte family and Vermilion Catholic family wanted to do something special.
Vermilion Catholic found a way to keep LaPorte’s legacy alive by naming a football award in his honor. Before the season begins, the head football coach will name one athlete who lives the way LaPorte did.
VC head coach Kevin Fouquier named VC senior Andre LeBlanc as the winner of this year’s Todd Laporte Award.
He said his selection was tough because there was so many good choices.
“It was a very tough decision but that is who my gut said to go with. Andre is very deserving and will represent what the award stands for. I know he will honor the memory of Todd,” said the head coach
Fouquier explained what the award stands for.
“The award is for the person that not only shows good character both on and off the field,” said the head coach. “A person that helps out in the community and does not want the recognition, a person that no matter where they are at, will always come back and help the VC Family. This person has to be a good leader by example. “
Andre fits the bill.

Dr. Holly Boffy

Dr. Holly Boffy qualifies for BESE Board Seat, District 7

“The successes of Louisiana students, teachers and school and district administrators continue to reach new heights as indicated by unprecedented graduation rates, scholarship funding, and other college and career readiness components. I am proud to have contributed to the remarkable improvement and look forward to continuing to work alongside educators and parents to ensure every Louisiana student has access to a high-quality education,” said Dr. Holly Boffy as she qualified for a seat on the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).
“Every decision I make on the board is focused on what is best for our students. Our graduation rate is up 9.1 percentage points, over half of students are now earning college and career credentials, and the number of students who qualify for TOPS is up by 31% since I was first elected. I’m running for a final term in office to ensure we keep education in Louisiana moving in the right direction. Our children deserve leadership that will put their interests above all else,” she adds.
Dr. Boffy graduated from Abbeville High School in 1996 and was honored as the Louisiana State Teacher of the Year in 2010. During her 10 years teaching middle school, she earned National Board Certification. As Vice President of the Board, she has been an outspoken leader promoting opportunities for students as well as teacher and leader development.
Dr. Boffy is the founder of EdTalents. The mission of EdTalents is to support the development of educator talent systems that attract, hire, place, develop, leverage, and retain strong teachers and leaders. Previously, Dr. Boffy worked for the Council of Chief State School Officers and the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana to advance initiatives supporting teachers and school leaders.
Dr. Boffy and her husband, Carrick, are parents to two children—Pierce, 12, who attends public school, and Claire, 3. Dr. Boffy is an active member of Esther Baptist Church in Vermilion Parish. The Boffys founded Fishing for Memories: A Benefit to Conquer Alzheimer’s. The event, which was held in Intracoastal City, raised over $300,000 for the cause while awarding over $100,000 to the anglers and over 40 lifetime fishing licenses to children. Dr. Boffy also enjoys supporting families considering adoption.
“I believe in living my life in service to others. The education I received in the public schools of Vermilion Parish have, in large part, made my success possible. The best way I can serve others is to help provide every child an excellent education. While we cannot offer every student the childhood we might want them to experience, we can provide each one a high-quality education,” she concludes.

Wayne Touchet seeking re-election for District 5 Police Jury seat

I am pleased to announce I am seeking re-election to the Vermilion Parish Police Jury and ask the voters of District 5 to continue your support of my work on your behalf.
We live in the most special place in Louisiana. That is the result of those who have come before us and those who contribute today. In my role as an elected representative to the people in my district, and on behalf of all who live in Vermilion Parish, I am constantly reminded of the responsibility members of the Police Jury have to do the best we can; whether I am involved in maintaining service you expect or responding in times of impending natural disasters, response or recovery.
My goal for 16 years of public service has been to listen to and be responsive to the needs of the people I serve. That has never changed. If re-elected as your member of the Vermilion Parish Police
Jury, you have my promise that I will not lose sight of that goal. My wife Liz and I look forward to shaking as many hands as possible, to talking with as many of you as possible, and for the opportunity to continue to serve if the people of District 5 honor me with your vote.

Thanks,

Wayne Touchet

Contractor electrocuted while working on Abbeville power lines; city shuts off electricity for an hour

Around 10:30 on Tuesday morning, power had to be shut off in the City of Abbeville to make repairs after a contractor was electrocuted while working on a live electrical line.
According to Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza, the contractor is alive, but severely burned. The contractor’s name has not been released.
“He was airlifted to the burn center in Baton Rouge,” Piazza said. “He was talking to the police and firemen who responded before the ambulance transported him from the scene.”
The contractor works for Sol Power Lines.
Piazza said the city hired the contractor to make some repairs to lines and change out five poles after Hurricane Barry caused some damage when it hit in July. Piazza said the contractors were making repairs without having to shut off power to the entire city-wide.
“They were working on the line as what they refer to as hot,” Piazza explained, “meaning it’s live.”
Piazza said it is not an uncommon way for some contractors to work on high-transmission lines.
“They are specialized in this and that is why we hire them for this kind of work,” Piazza said, “but it is dangerous work.”
Contractors were replacing electrical poles on Ollie Drive, near Abbeville High School, when the incident occurred.
“I heard a big boom,” said one person who lives on Ollie Drive. “I thought it was a thunderstorm that came out of nowhere.”
Ollie Drive is near the Pete Noel Substation, the city’s primary power source.
“We had to shut the substation down completely,” Piazza said. “They were not going to be able to make repairs with the wires still live.”
Abbeville Electrical crews had power restored after an hour.
Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau announced at 11 a.m. that the four schools in Abbeville would be let out early because schools were without electricity.
