Two Drivers Killed in Multi-Car Crash on I-10

LAFAYETTE – Shortly after 1 a.m. on Jan. 24, 2019, Troop I was notified of a crash involving multiple vehicles on I-10 eastbound east of Louisiana Ave. in Lafayette Parish.
The crash claimed the lives of 24-year-old Geri Glasco of Arnaudville, and 45-year-old Kenneth McNeil of Houston, TX.
The preliminary investigation revealed that 67-year-old William Rawlings of Killeen, TX was driving a 2010 Freightliner 18-wheeler eastbound on I-10 when he encountered slow moving traffic in an active construction zone. For unknown reasons, Rawlings was unable to slow down in a timely manner and struck the rear of a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup driven by McNeil. That initial crash began a chain reaction involving a total of five vehicles. McNeil’s vehicle was pushed into Glasco’s vehicle, a 2017 Ford Escape. Glasco’s Ford then struck the rear of a second 18-wheeler, which in turn struck another 18-wheeler.
McNeil and Glasco both suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. They were pronounced deceased on scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is unknown and standard toxicology tests are pending. Rawlings submitted a breath sample which showed no alcohol present at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and charges may be pending.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, and follow all traffic laws. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.

Jean Broussard, the new president, talks with vice president Laura LeBeouf after Tuesday’s meeting.

Vermilion Parish School Board picks president on first vote

Broussard is new president, LeBeouf is vice president

It took only one vote.
The Vermilion Parish School Board was able to select a new board president and vice president on Tuesday during a special board meeting.
On the first vote, the school board voted 8-0 to name Jean Broussard as the new president of the school board.
It was unanimous only because Broussard was the only name on the ballot.
The two names nominated for president were Broussard and board member Kibbie Pillette.
Earlier in the month, the school board was deadlocked 4-4 on naming a president between Pillette and Broussard. At Tuesday’s meeting, both men were nominated again.
But before the first vote was taken, Pillette withdrew his name.
“Let me say that I withdraw my name for president simply because I want this board to function as one board. We can’t solve anything if we continue to split and continue to fight. I want to end that.”
Broussard thanked Pillette for the action he took. Broussard said had the board voted 4-4, he was going to do what Pillette did before the second vote was taken.
“I would have broken the tie by withdrawing my name,” said Broussard. “We are the board. We have to begin picking up the pieces and move on.”
With a new board president, the board had to select a board vice president. The nominations were brand new board member Jason Roy and Laura LeBeouf, who was the vice president for the last year.
LeBeouf won after a 5-3 vote.
Voting for her were LeBeouf, Pillette, Dale Stelly, David Dupuis, and Broussard. Voting for Roy were Chris Gautreaux, Kristy Hebert, and Roy.
After the regular meeting was over, Broussard and LeBeouf stood up and hugged one another and talked to each other for another 15 minutes.
They will serve one year as president and vice president.

William Thibodeaux will be inducted into the Order of Living Legends next month.

William Thibodeaux to be inducted into Order of Living Legends

Andy Perrin, chairman of the Executive Committee of the Acadian Museum, announces that the Acadian Museum will induct William Thibodeaux into its Order of Living Legends on Saturday, February 2, 2019.
The event will take place at the French Table, Bernard Bertrand House, 1023 The Boulevard, Rayne at 10 a.m.
Thibodeaux is a native of Rayne, Louisiana.
He was one of five children—three boys and two girls born to Wilson Thibodeaux and the former Rose Mae Menard of Mire. He grew up in a French-speaking community, and like most Acadians during that era, French was his first language.
Thibodeaux failed in the first grade because he could not speak English. He attended Rayne High School and at the age of 18 enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict. He served on board the U.S.S. O’Bannon (DD-450), a World War II era destroyer. It was one of the two most decorated navy ships of all World War II vessels, which he is most proud of. This was where he got his love of history—through books while in the Navy. Thibodeaux is married to the love of his life—the former Judy Clark of Riceville, La.
After serving his country Thibodeaux hired on with a Fortune 500 company—Southern Pacific Railroad and later Union Pacific Railroad, where he was employed for 44 wonderful years. He was fortunate to have spent his entire career working for the railroad between Houston and New Orleans. This was where he got his passion for history. One of his many chores as Roadmaster with the railroad was making twice monthly inspection trips of the railroad property by train on his assigned territory. This gave him a perfect opportunity to view the railroad while hear interesting stories. This is where he heard many stories and met some of the nicest people. After retiring, Thibodeaux began writing stories that he had heard earlier in life. Some stories go all the way back to his early childhood.
For the last decade or so, Thibodeaux has led a French table group in Rayne (la table Française de Rayne et histoire) every Saturday morning beginning at 9:30.
Each week he selects and compiles a list of about 30 Cajun French words and phrases that he sends to recipients. He occasionally has invited guest who share their stories.
Each session is audio-video recorded and archived at Dupré Library for posterity. And, for more than three years now, Thibodeaux has conducted a monthly history talk at Hospice of Acadiana in Lafayette.
The stories he shares all have historical significance to the Acadiana region. His talks are about people, places and events of long ago. They are also audio-video recorded and archived at Dupré Library. The talks are mostly from information he has researched or written about.
Thibodeaux will soon be a published author. He is nearly finished assembling a book and it should be released sometime around May or June 2019.
His book is titled: Hidden History of Acadiana. It is a compilation of non-fictional short stories that he has written over the years about people, places and events of long, long ago.
The Living Legends series, free and open to the public, honors individuals who have helped shape and define the Cajun culture. The program is hosted by the Acadian Museum of Erath (acadianmuseum.com), a nonprofit organization.  Corporate sponsor for the program is the law firm of Perrin, Landry, & deLaunay. For more information, you may call 937-0012, and visit www.acadianmuseum.com to view a complete list of all prior inductees.
