North Vermilion falls to Patterson

PATTERSON - The North Vermilion Patriots were three minutes away from upsetting the Patterson Lumberjacks.
NV was leading 21-20 with 3:30 to play, but the lead was short. After Patterson cut the lead to one point, the Lumberjacks did a successful on-side kick.
Patterson got the ball and then went down and scored the game winning touchdown with just over as minute to go in the game.
Patterson outscored NV 14-0 in the final quarter.
Malik Criner, who has yet to rush for under 140 yards this season, had 193 yards on 21 carries and scored twice.
On NV’s first drive of the game, Creed Rudd scored on a 13 yard run.
Criner had a 48-yard TD score in the third period and a 11 yard TD run in the finals second of the third period.
The Patriots attempted to pass the football. Garrett Becker was 4 of 9 for 74 yards and an interception.
Rudd had two catches for 39 yards. He also had two carries for 39 yards.
The Patriots (4-2, 0-1) entertain Erath (0-6) on Friday.

Berwick......55
Erath...........19

The Erath Bobcats dropped a homecoming game to Berwick on Friday.
Berwick quarterback Mitchell Sanford was 11 of 26 passing for 317 yards. He also ran for 87 yards.
He threw two TD passes to LSU commitment Kenan Jones for 20 and 31 yards.
The bad luck bug does not want to away for Erath.
The Bobcats switched to spread offense two games ago because of new quarterback Cameron Landry. Landry would get hurt in the second quarter, so EHS switched back to the I-formation offense.
Landry did throw a TD pass to Matt Domingues. His back up, Luke LeBlanc came in and threw TD passes to Luke Frederick (6 and 35 yards).

Gueydan hangs on to beat Centerville

On Thursday, the Gueydan Bears hung on to beat the Centerville Tigers, 42-33, in district action.
Centerville scored 12 points in the final seven minutes to make it a game.
The two teams combined or 731 yards rushing.
Gueydan had 383 yards and Centerville had 348 yards.
The Bears had two players rush for 148 plus yards.
Spencer Broussard had 18 carries for 147 yards, while Mark Clark had 145 yards on 16 totes.
The game was tied 14-14 after the first quarter.
GHS quarterback Blaire Broussard had a 38 yard TD run and Clasrk added a 34-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Broussard had a long 66-yard TD run, but Centerville came right back and scored. The Bears went into the lockerroom leading 28-21.
Both teams did not score in the third quarter.
They did, however, match scores in the final quarter.
Clark had a 31 yard TD run in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Right back came Centerville to match Gueydan’s score with one of their own.

E.D. White too much for VC

First-year Vermilion Catholic coach Brady Thomas had a date to fill on his 2017 schedule when he took over the Screaming Eagles’ reins.
His choice of Class 4A member E.D. White shows how strongly Thomas wants his team to be able to compete, a matchup that could pay dividends down the road.
On Friday night, though, his Eagles fell behind 21-0 after one quarter and were no match for the visiting Cardinals, who departed with a 35-7 victory.
“This was the only date not filled when I took over,” Thomas said. “So I started looking around, and found two teams we could play. I chose the better of the two schools, because I wanted the bigger challenge for my team.”
Senior running back Nik Shanklin ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries to lead the Cardinals to victory.
Quarterback Brandon Legendre added 79 yards on 12 carries, including a Houdini-like escape for a 23-yard touchdown for the final EDW touchdown of the night, coming on the first drive of the third period.
The Cardinals then substituted liberally, improving to 5-1 on the year.
“We expected we would see good players,” Thomas said. “We knew their quarterback could make plays with his feet, and that their running back ran strong. We had to do the best we could to contain them.
“They have a very sound offense. Those two could play in college. But we will see other good quarterbacks and running backs on our schedule, and we have to be ready for them.”
The Eagles’ own quarterback picture regained a familiar face as J.T. Lege returned to the field after hurting his leg at the beginning of the campaign.
“This was his first game back,” Thomas said. “He took a couple of tough shots on the leg, but bounced right up. We have to get him more comfortable in the pocket, and when we make some throws we have to catch it.”
Younger brother Drew Lege, who enjoyed a spectacular 6-touchdown night last week against Centerville, relieved JT and produced VC’s only score of the night with a picture perfect 32-yard bomb to a streaking Chris Constantine.
“Drew stepped in (during J.T.’s absence) and has done a good job to keep us going,” Thomas said. “
It was a quick 21-0 after one period as Shanklin scored from 9 and 1 yards away and Aaron Arcement tallied from 3 yards out. The visitors then made it 28-0 at halftime over their Class 1A foes with a 5-yard rumble by Shanklin.
The ball-hawking Cardinals defense got its 15th interception of the year as Connor Kliebert’s theft helped set up EDW’s third score of the opening quarter.
Now 4-2 on the year, the Eagles return to district play next week against Gueydan. That’s a better fit, although Thomas will always want his squad to know they can test themselves to play better against top competition.

Matt Roden of Kaplan kisses the Russo Trophy after the win.

Russo Trophy staying in Kaplan for another year

It looks like the Peter Russo Memorial Trophy is staying put at Kaplan High, for a 12th straight year..
The Kaplan Pirates beat the Abbeville Wildcats 51-12. The 51 points scored by Kaplan is the most points scored by a Pirate team against the Wildcats. The previous highest was 48 points in 2008.
The last time a Kaplan team lost to Abbeville was in 2005, when Robert Toomer was Abbeville’s head coach.
Overall, Abbeville has won the Peter Russo Memorial Trophy more than Kaplan has, over the last 68 years. The series record is 40-26-2 in favor of AHS.
The first 20 years, AHS dominated with a 20-1-1 record.
Since 1970, the Pirates own the trophy, winning 25 out of the last 47 games.
From 1990 to 2017, Kaplan has won 18 out of the last 28 meetings.
Kaplan has also rattled off 12 straight wins. Kaplan head coach Stephen Lotief, who has been at Kaplan since 2010, has won all eight games against Abbeville. His team has scored an average of 36 points against Abbeville.
On Friday, it did not take long for Kaplan to set the tone.
The Pirates took their opening possession and marched 56-yards taking two minutes off the clock for their first score. After running three straight plays, the Pirates went to the air on the fourth play. KHS quarterback Trae Case threw a 10-yard TD pass to Matt Roden for a touchdown. Mac Thibeaux converted the two point play. Kaplan led 8-0.
On Kaplan’s next possession, they scored again. Thibeaux darted 38-yards up the middle for a score, and Braylon Romero ran the two-point play for a 16-0 lead.
Down 16-0, the Wildcats tried to go to the air, but Kaplan was ready. KHS defensive back Logan Roy picked off a Chad Celestine pass. It only took Kaplan two plays to find the end zone. Romero scored on a 26-yard run.
The Pirates had a convincing 30-0 lead at halftime.
“We did alright,” said Lotief about his team’s performance. “I saw some good things out there.”
Romero finished with 110 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown, while Thibeaux had 122 yards on 11 carries. Most of their carries were for three quarters.
Kaplan finished with 470 yards of total offense.
They ran for 409 yards and threw for 61-yards.
Case completed 3-of-6 passes for 61-yards.
If there was a flaw in Kaplan’s game, it was penalties. The Pirates committed 10 penalties for 80-yards.
AHS quarterback Chad Celestine was Abbeville’s leading rusher (13-122). Deion Williams (9-24), Tavis Briggs (2-28) and Tavian Menard (4-20) also carried the pigskin.

GAME NOTE:

With the win over Abbeville, Lotief looks to have won his 114th game as a head football coach. All of his wins come at two different schools in Vermilion Parish.
He coached at North Vermilion from 2002 to 2009 where he finished with a 49-35 win-loss record.
He has been at Kaplan High since 2010, and has an impressive 65-28 win-loss record.
Since 2002, Lotief has a win-loss record of 114-63.
In the parish rankings, he has surpassed former Erath head coach Jacob Byler, who had 113 wins.

Paul Harold Dartez

Paul Harold Dartez passed away on October 4, 2017. He was born on January 25, 1927, and celebrated his ninetieth birthday earlier this year in style, surrounded by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Velta Frederick Dartez; sisters, Louise Broussard and Emma Varn; children, Michael (wife Phyllis), Alice Stewart (husband Kim), and Matthew (wife Michelle); nine grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonce and Bella Dartez.
Harold served in the Army in Japan during World War II, then returned home to the family farm. He and Velta married and were rarely apart for the next 65 years. He spent many years working at Duhon’s General Merchandise after retiring from farming.
He was known as a jack of all trades, and many a person brought something for him to repair. He always wanted to learn new things and taught himself how to navigate a computer and the internet. He loved a challenge. He also loved being outdoors and was known for his beautiful yard. If he wasn’t drinking his cup of coffee he was on his riding lawnmower.
His grandchildren have loved his lap to sit on, his sense of humor, and his easy laugh. A TV commercial chihuahua announcing “I think I need a bigger box” gave Harold more fits of giggles than it had any right to. And even throughout his seven-year battle with cancer, he was always quick with a smile, a joke, or a “hot dog!”
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, October 7, 2017 in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Reading from scripture will be Christopher Stewart and Monique LeMaire.
Burial will take place in St. Alphonsus Mausoleum.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home- Maurice on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 5:00PM to 9:00PM. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00PM on Friday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue Saturday from 8:00AM until the time of service.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Dartez, Christopher Stewart, Kevin Stewart, Bryce Dartez, Brayden Dartez and Bryan Simon.
The family would like to thank Heart of Hospice and Bonnie LeLeux for their care and compassion.
Personal condolences may be sent to the Dartez family at www.delhommefuneralhome.com.
Delhomme Funeral Home, 200 Chief H. Fred Road, Maurice, LA is in charge of funeral arrangements.
