Curtis J. Bernard

LAFAYETTE — Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Curtis J. Bernard, 84, who died Saturday afternoon, May 27th, at Lady of the Oaks Retirement Manor, surrounded by his loved ones.
Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery with military honors. Father Daniel Edwards, Pastor of St. Jules Church, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the services. Lectors will Jack Caffery and Annie Holleman and the Giftbearers will be Emily Holleman Willis and Kate Caffery. The Eulogist will be Shari Holleman. Jodi Bollich, organist, will sing for the services.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Bertha Domingue Bernard, and two daughters, Diane Keogh and her husband, Ross, and Shari Holleman of Lafayette. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jack Caffery, Kate Caffery, Annie Holleman, and Emily Holleman Willis and her husband, Beau; one great-grandson, Robert Holleman Willis and one sister, Helen Bernard Simon.
Mr. Bernard was the son of the late Renold Bernard and Lauress Aucoin Bernard of Vermilion Parish.
Mr. Bernard was a native of Vermilion Parish and lived in Lafayette most of his life. He was a graduate of Erath High School, class of 1950, the first class to attend 12 years of school. Enrolling in college after serving his country, he graduated in 1959 from SLI, the last graduating class of the institution bearing that name, now ULL.
Mr. Bernard served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He continued his service to our country in the Naval Reserve, and later the Louisiana Army National Guard. His service was distinguished by several decorations and he was asked to represent Louisiana at the Sergeants' Major Academy in El Paso, which later earned him a tour of duty at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. at the National Guard Bureau. Mr. Bernard retired from the military at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was proudly and affectionately called "Sarge" by his grandchildren.
Mr. Bernard worked as an Industrial Arts teacher in the Lafayette Parish School System for 25 years. He was a member of various local, state and national teachers' associations. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1286 and the VFW Post 9822 in Judice.
After retiring from the teaching profession, Mr. Bernard drove 18-wheeler trucks around the U.S. for over 10 years. He enjoyed those years seeing all of the glorious country that he loved so much.
A special thanks to the staff at Lady of the Oaks Retirement Manor and to Hospice of Acadiana for their special care and compassion these past few years.
A Rosary will be prayed by the St. Edmond's Ladies Altar Society at 6:00 PM Tuesday in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location. Visiting hours are from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:00 AM until time of services.
Pallbearers will be his four grandchildren, Jack Caffery, Kate Caffery, Annie Holleman and Emily Holleman Willis.
Honorary pallbearers are members of his high school graduation class, J.V. Viator, Louis Landry, Chris Suire, Andre Dubois and Emery Bares.

Olga Vigneaux Ledet

ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Olga Vigneaux Ledet, 92, will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, May 29, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at David Funeral Home of Abbeville on Sunday, May 28, 2017 from 4:00PM until 9:00PM, with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00PM. Visitation will resume on Monday, May 29, 2017 at 8:00AM until the time of service.
Olga was born in Vermilion Parish to Gaston Vigneaux and Ena Bares Vigneaux. She attended and graduated E. Broussard High School. She then attended Hotel Dieu in Beaumont, Texas. After becoming an R.N. she began her nursing career at the office of Dr. Chauvin in Abbeville.
Mrs. Ledet is survived by her eight children: Louis and his wife Becky, Cherylyn L. Derouen, Art and his wife B.J. , Ronald and his wife Mary Pat, Randal and his wife Jan, Carl and his wife Diana, Neal and his wife Diane, and Troy and his wife Debbie. Survivors also include his sisters Lola Griffin and Lydia McMullen. Olga's legacy included numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Louis Francis Ledet, sister Betty Smith, brother Raymond Vigneaux and her parents.
Readings during the service will be delivered by grandchildren: Todd Ledet, Alyssa Steen and Polly Scalisi. Bringing gifts to the alter are grandchildren Monica Derouen and Wiley Ledet.
Special thanks are extended to her faithful caregivers, Debbie Bordelon and Kathy Hamm and to the Carpenter House Hospice.

William Charles Broadhurst

Funeral services for longtime Louisiana attorney, lobbyist and political adviser William C. Broadhurst will be held at 10AM on Friday, June 2, at First United Methodist Church of Crowley. Mr. Broadhurst died unexpectedly in his sleep at his family home in Crowley, Louisiana. He was 77.
Born in Crowley to Marian Lewis Broadhurst and Robert C. Broadhurst, Sr. on December 31, 1939, William “Bill” Broadhurst was highly respected as a gifted attorney, skilled negotiator, trusted political advisor and effective lobbyist. His knowledge and integrity are legendary, and for nearly 60 years he worked alongside Louisiana’s top political leaders, including Governor Edwin W. Edwards.
“Billy had a natural ability for understanding and relating to people and effectively addressing some of the most complicated political issues,” Edwards said in an interview with USA Today Network. “He was instrumental in helping with the (1973-74) Constitutional Convention.”
Broadhurst served as President of the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System (1980), as well as the first chairman of the board of the Louisiana CAJUNDOME Commission (1985), and on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Lafayette, Louisiana. He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association and the board of trustees of the First United Methodist Church of Crowley.
Broadhurst attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, followed by Louisiana State University and LSU Law School, where he earned his law degree in 1961. Thereafter, he began a distinguished legal career as an attorney with the law firm of Edwards and Edwards (Edwin W. Edwards and Nolan J. Edwards). In 1965 the firm became known as Edwards, Edwards and Broadhurst.
In 1975 Broadhurst was appointed chief counsel to the State of Louisiana Division of Natural Resources and Energy, Department of Conservation. Two years later, he became founding partner of Broadhurst, Brook, Mangham and Hardy law firm in Lafayette, Louisiana. The firm expanded to Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., representing corporate clients in complex commercial cases and concentrating in matters of banking, oil & gas exploration, environmental litigation, newspapers, food industry, intrastate and interstate gas pipelines, regulatory law, real estate law and lobbying.
Broadhurst served as general counsel for First National Bank (FNB) of Lafayette, Trans Louisiana Gas Distribution Company, and as Louisiana general counsel for The Williams Companies in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He pioneered the Lignite Mining Law in Louisiana as the chief redactor and lobbyist for successful passage of the Louisiana Surface Mining and Reclamation Act, representing Phillips Coal Company. He also played a pivotal role in successfully opening the door for statewide banking in Louisiana as a lobbyist for the Louisiana Intrastate Banking Law, representing clients such as FNB of Lafayette, FNBC New Orleans, BNO New Orleans, and Hibernia Bank of New Orleans.
In 1984, Governor Edwin W. Edwards and Attorney General William J. Guste, Jr. appointed Broadhurst chairman of the advisory team and as chief negotiator for the State of Louisiana in connection with the then-pending 8(g) litigation against the federal government. Working pro bono with the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Office of Conservation, Attorney General’s Office, the Attorney for Federal Affairs, and the Louisiana congressional delegation, Broadhurst was instrumental in securing a $583 million settlement. Administered by the Louisiana Board of Regents, the considerable interest earnings funded 8(g) projects in Louisiana, designed to foster excellence in education, research and service.
Other notable clients included Columbia Gulf Transmission Co., Intrastate and Interstate Gas Pipelines, Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline Co., Tennessee Gas Transmission Co., Transco Louisiana, Intrastate Gas Co., Williams Gas Pipeline, Louisiana State Newspapers, CLECO and CSX Railroads.
In recent years, Broadhurst worked tirelessly as an attorney, advisor, and strategist for Entergy New Orleans.
In January 2017, Broadhurst was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame, receiving the “2017 Friend of Edwin Edwards Award,” acknowledging his longtime friendship and support of the former governor.
Broadhurst was widely known as a charismatic yet tough negotiator in settlement talks and for skillfully navigating complicated oil and gas transactions. A steadfast friend and confidant, he earned a reputation as a brilliant political strategist as well as a fun-loving Louisiana historian and raconteur. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and LSU football.
“Billy was one of the brightest people I ever met in government,” said Louisiana Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego. “He was the type of guy who could solve almost any problem. He also had a great sense of humor and kept everyone on their toes.”
Bill Broadhurst was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of twenty-four years, Nancy de la Houssaye Broadhurst of Crowley, Louisiana; daughter Allison Broadhurst Mouton (Joey) and their children William and Mason; daughter Michelle Broadhurst Andrus (David) and their children Whitney, Tyler, Layne and Avery; three great grandchildren; and one brother, Robert C. Broadhurst, and his children Trey and Jamie Broadhurst.
A two-part eulogy will include remarks by Clancy DuBos, political analyst for WWL-TV New Orleans and columnist for Gambit newspaper; and former Louisiana Governor Edwin W. Edwards. Pallbearers are William Mouton, Joseph Mouton, Alan de la Houssaye, John Williford, Rod West, William Kearney and Gregory Reggie. Honorary Pallbearers are Broadhust’s close friends from “The Summit Group” — Braxton (B.I.) Moody III, Billy Trotter, Rocky Robin, Milo Nickel, Kenneth Privat, and Fred Reggie.

James V. King, Sr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Martin & Castille’s La Fleur de Lis Chapel for James Vance King, Sr., 78, of Lafayette, who passed away peacefully at LGMC, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, May 24, 2017 due to a brief illness. Brother Chris Fontenot, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Youngsville will conduct the services. Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Paulette Broussard King; his son, James Vance King, Jr. and wife Debbie; his daughters, Michelle King May and her husband Jonathan, Melissa Anne King, and Margaret King Greene and her husband Randall; seven grandchildren, James Vance King, III, Michael Forrest Warren, Jr., Katherine Michelle May, Kaylin Grace King, Madelyn Dianne Andrews, Mary Kathryn Warren, and Randall James Greene; one great granddaughter, Emma Grace Warren; his mother in law, Frieda N. Broussard of Abbeville, Louisiana; his two sisters, JoAnn Bonner and her husband John of Lufkin, Texas, and their children Charissa Bonner Gibson and Jimmy Bonner; and Jenny Almarez of Kingwood, Texas and her children Brandon Clostio and Kimberly Clostio Luiz; his sisters in law, Christine Hensgens and her husband Gene of Crowley, Louisiana, and their children Julie Hengsens Reed, Dianne Hensgens Graham, Christian Hensgens, and Gregory Hensgens; and Kathy Dyson and her husband Steve of Abbeville, Louisiana and their children Stephanie Dyson Nichols and Aimee Dyson O’Niell. Jimmy is also survived by a large extended close family and a host of dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Alice Collins King; his father in law, Paul Broussard; and one cousin, Wayne Allen King, who he considered his brother.
Mr. King was born in Houston, Texas on September 30, 1938. He graduated from Lufkin High School and attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He then embarked on a lifelong career in the oil and gas industry leading him to Abbeville, Louisiana where he met and married the love of his life, Paulette Broussard. Working as a roughneck for The Offshore Drilling Company and then moving on to sales and piloting for Hughes Tool Company, Mr. King continued his successful sales career with Southwest Oilfield Products and then venturing on his own to form Oilfield Services of Louisiana in 1977. After selling the company in 1981, Mr. and Mrs. King retired to Texas and ranched for several years before returning to Lafayette and the oil and gas industry, working for Industrial Lift Truck. In 1994, Mr. King, his wife, and children acquired Rig Tools, and began expanding the company rental lines and locations. After 12 successful years in business, the family sold its holdings to OMNI Energy Corporation and Mr. King once again retired.
Mr. King was a member of First Baptist Church of Youngsville. Jimmy believed in acts and works of charity. During his later years, Mr. King became heavily involved with the Evangeline Area Council Boys Scouts of America, served on the Annual Auction Committee, and was President for the past several years. He was also involved in the renovations at Mount Bayou Lost Camp and instrumental in the dream and success of Swamp Base. Mr. King received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service in 2008, and the Silver Star in 2016. He was a lifelong member of the NRA and a supporter of our veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project. He and Mrs. King supported the Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, SD, and the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. King enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at his hunting leases or camp in Cocodrie with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling and his many hobbies included gun collecting, knife collecting and Native American Art. Most importantly, Mr. King was a devoted family man. He deeply loved his family and cherished his time spent with them. Always the glue, he will be missed by all who loved him.
The family will receive visitors Friday, May 26, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Martin & Castille Funeral Home SOUTHSIDE location. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Friday in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Saturday, May 27 from 8:00 AM until time of service.
Pallbearers are James V. King, Jr., James V. King, III, Michael Forrest Warren, Jr., Randall James Greene, Jimmy Bonner, Brandon Clostio, Jim Ortego, Fred Touchet, and Bobby Chandlier.

James Nolan Hebert, Sr.

ABBEVILLE — Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life of James Nolan Hebert, Sr., 77, who died Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice. He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Deacon William “Billy” Vincent officiating the services. Pallbearers will be his workers Jim Hebert, Jr., Floyd Landry, Scott Richard, Carl Harris, Joe Lagesse and Ronald Touchet. Honorary pallbearers include Troy Hebert, Jody Hebert, Kent Touchet, Cody Miller, Devyn Touchet, Eric Touchet and Trey Hebert.
James was a military veteran who proudly served in the United States Air Force. In 1961, he went to work for Patin’s Tire Service then was promoted to manager in 1963. He purchased the business in 1993 which we now know as Jim’s Tire Service. Mr. Jim will always be remembered by many for his love for coaching youth football and baseball. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, traveling and trawling for shrimp.
Jim is survived by five children, James N. Hebert Jr. and his wife Susan, Troy Hebert and his wife Cindy, Jody Hebert and his partner Curtis, Charolette Touchet and her husband Kent, and Denise LeBlanc and her husband Leslie; grandchildren, Cody Miller, Tyler Hebert, Devyn Touchet, Trey Hebert, Eric Touchet, Samantha LeBlanc and Charlotte LeBlanc; step-grandchildren, Amber T. Kelly, Blake Touchet, Bailee Lerette, Katelyn Blanchard, Gavin Blanchard and Ian Blanchard; great grandchildren, Jaxon Comeaux, Noble Kelly, Justice Kelly, Valor Kelly, Honor Kelley, Luke Touchet and Hugo Touchet; brothers, Dalton Hebert and Norris Hebert; and sister, Regina Fergerson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nedean M. Hebert; infant child; and parents, Emanuel Hebert and the former Myrtle Luquette.

KAPLAN—Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Mary Elizabeth Conner Marceaux, 57, who passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at her residence. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Clay Marceaux of Kaplan; two sons, Mitchell Marceaux and his wife, Heather of Sulphur and Matt Marceaux and his companion, Hana of Kaplan; one sister, Susan LeBlanc of Houston, TX; and three grandchildren, Tyler Moore, Brianna Marceaux, and MaKensie Marceaux.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Conner and the former Audrey Bourque.

Steven Paul Broussard

A memorial mass will be held at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Steven Paul Broussard, 31, who died Tuesday, May 16, 2017. Father Louis Richard will be the officiate for the services.
Life is amazing, precious, and complicated. Our family is experiencing one of the more complicated aspects of life at this time. Our hearts will never be the same. Steven Paul Broussard was an amazing father, brother, best friend, teacher, supporter, and provider. His heart was enormous, and his soul was beautiful. We will never forget his amazing smile. We love you. Fly high and rest easy my sweet angel.
Steven is survived by his father, Steven Joseph Broussard of Abbeville; two sons, Jaxon Broussard and Brett Broussard both of Maurice; daughter, Sophia Broussard of Maurice; girlfriend, Samantha Clark of Maurice; sisters, Holly Broussard of Lafayette, and Heidi Broussard Gracy and her husband Brock of Maurice; maternal grandmother, Dulse Cormier; paternal grandparents, Norris and Eloise Broussard.

Is garbage company overcharging the town of Delcambre?

DELCAMBRE — Officials with the town of Delcambre are not too happy with Progressive Waste Management, the company that picks up garbage in Iberia and Vermilion Parishes.
At a town council meeting earlier in the month, Delcambre Mayor Pam Blakely informed the aldermen that Progressive Waste wanted to raise its monthly rate for residents who live in the Iberia Parish side in Delcambre.
The company informed Blakely it was increasing the bill by just under $2 a month per resident and wanted Blakely to sign a new contract with the new rate increase. She did not.
The town has yet to sign a new contract because it also learned Progressive Waste may have been overbilling the town, said Blakely at the town meeting.
Progressive Waste sends a bill to the town for certain amount of residents who live in the Iberia Parish side of Delcambre. The town just pays the bill for the amount of homes Progressive Waste sends the town.
After investigating Mayor Blakely learned that Progressive is charging the town for 22 homes on Debuse Road in Delcambre. She told the aldermen there is only one house on the road.
If that is allegedly happening, the town is being overcharged $3,150 a year just for Debuse Road.
On Dooley Street, Mayor Blakely said Progressive Waste is allegedly charging the town for 36 homes when there are only 15 homes in the Delcambre city limits.
“We are being overcharged,’ said Mayor Blakely.
The town has been paying Progressive Waste for 59 homes that do not exist, said Mayor Blakely. That equals to around $9,000 a year.
Homer Stelly, the town’s new street commissioner, did a ride along with Progressive Waste Management, and discovered there are alledgedly 60 homes being charged to the town that do not exist.
Because of that, the aldermen have not approved the signing of a new contract with Progressive Waste.
They are waiting for a new garbage company to submit bids to see if they are cheaper than Progressive Waste Management.
Another option is to get out of the garbage collection business, altogether, and just let Progressive Waste Management send the bill to the home owner.
The Mayor also complained that Progressive Waste Management trucks are dripping oil on the streets of Delcambre.
