Abbeville's Deion Williams (5, with helmet off) had a busy game. He ran for 127 yards and scored three touchdowns for AHS.

Abbeville runs past West St.Mary

BALDWIN - The Abbeville Wildcats managed to hang on and beat the West St. Mary Wolves 39-30 in the season-opener for both teams on Thursday.
The Wildcats never trailed, but they also never had a comfortable lead because West St. Mary quarterback Taylon Druilhet kept his team in the game.
Druilhet threw for an impressive 283 yards en route to the loss.
Abbeville head coach Kevin Kern was happy with the win but knows his team can play better.
“It was a good win, but I know we can play better than we did,” said Kern. “We played sloppy at times, and still have things to work on, but I will take the win.”
The two teams ran different styles of offense. The Wolves threw the football, while the Wildcats (1-0) ran the football.
West St. Mary’s quarterback threw the football 35 times, and Abbeville’s running backs ran the football 56 times.
Abbeville’s new triple-option offense did what it had to do. Seven different Wildcats carried the pigskin with Deion Williams leading the way with 29 carries for 127 yards, and he scored three times.
“He is our horse, our go-to guy,” said Kern.
Abbeville scored on its opening series, which was set up by AHS linebacker Chad Celestine’s interception at midfield.
The Wildcats marched 50 yards downfield and senior running back Braeden Williams scored from the four-yard line. The kick was blocked, and Abbeville led 6-0.
Abbeville scored again on its next possession. The Wildcats went 70 yards on the ground. Braeden Williams darted six yards around the right side for a six-yard TD run. He scored the two-point conversion, and it looked like Abbeville was on its way to a blowout win.
By halftime, West St. Mary, with its passing game, crawled back into the game, down 14-12.
Druilhet threw for 143 yards at halftime for West St. Mary. Abbeville, on the other hand, rushed for 105 yards. Deion had only 33 yards on eight carries in the first half. He rushed for close to 100 yards in the second half. His longest run of the second half was for 28 yards.
Abbeville took its opening second-half possession and marched 49 yards for another score. On third down, Tavion Menard, who sat out the first half, took his first carry of the game and ran 19 yards for a first down. He finished the game with 85 yards, all gained in the second half.
Deion carried the football the next three times for 26 yards and scored from the 6. At the 8:56 mark in the third quarter, Abbeville led 20-12.
West St. Mary did not fall apart. It came right back and scored. Abbeville hung on to a 20-18 lead.
The Wildcats’ offense answered when they needed. They marched 75 yards and scored again. They had two big runs on the scoring drive. Braeden Williams darted 13 yards and quarterback Jaidyn O’Brien had an 18-yard run.
In the wishbone set, Deion had his longest run, 28 yards, of the night, for a touchdown. Jeremi Vilchis nailed the extra point and gave AHS a cushion 27-18 lead.
Abbeville extended the lead to 33-18 on Deion’s 12-yard TD run with only 6:47 to play in the game.
The Wildcats iced the game on a big run by Tavion Menard, who scooted 45 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown with 2:19 to play in the game.
O’Brien was 0-4 passing, but he ran for 31 yards on 11 carries.
Braeden Williams had six carries for 30 yards.
Abbeville is home Friday night against Church Point.

THE POST-SIGNAL / Steve Bandy
Louisiana State Police and several other agencies work a fatal crash that left two men dead in Acadia Parish Thursday morning. The crash happened on Highway 98 and McCain Road just before 8 a.m. Two cars were involved in the incident.

Acadia Parish Fatal Crash Claims Two Lives

IOTA – Shortly before 7:30 am on August 30, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle crash that resulted in two men suffering fatal injuries on LA Hwy 3070 (McCain Rd.) at LA Hwy 98 in Acadia Parish. The crash took the lives of 40-year-old Carlos Lazo of Duson and 28-year-old Luis Estrada of Scott.
The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lazo was driving a 2002 Honda Civic northbound on LA Hwy 3070. At the same time, 17-year-old Caroline Gauthier of Crowley was driving a 2018 Mercedes CLA westbound on LA Hwy 98. As Lazo approached the intersection, he failed to stop, crossing into the oncoming path of Gauthier’s vehicle. As a result, the Mercedes struck the passenger door of the Honda.
Lazo and his front seat passenger Estrada sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, and were both pronounced deceased on scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Lazo was properly restrained in the crash; however, Estrada was not properly restrained. Gauthier, along with her 14-year-old passenger, were both properly restrained and only suffered minor injuries. Impairment is unknown at this time, but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers would like to remind motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Please take a moment to speak with your loved ones about the importance of their safe decisions. Remind them to always wear a seatbelt, never drive impaired, obey all traffic laws, and to avoid distractions. The conversation could lead to helping prevent a serious crash or death.

City Attorney Woody Woodruff (right) administers the oath of office for the newly installed Councilman for District C, Justin Johnson. He replaces Richard LeBlanc who recently passed away after a brief illness.

Johnson named Councilman for District C

Justin Johnson was sworn in as the Councilman for District C to replace the late Richard LeBlanc who recently passed away after a brief illness.
He took his oath of office during the regular City Council meeting last Tuesday.
Johnson is not new to the workings of the city. He is also a member of the Finance Committee for the last three years.
His other involvement in the city are as a referee and umpire for youth sports.
He is a 2001 graduate of Kaplan High School and holds a degree in Business from McNeese State University.
His nomination was a unanimous vote. He will serve in that capacity until a special election is held on October 12, 2019.
The council also unanimously adopted a resolution ordering and calling an election to be held in the City of Kaplan on December 8 to authorize the issuance of general election bonds in the amount of $750,000.
While the monies were to be dedicated to the recreation department, Kaplan Mayor Mike Kloesel felt that the money was desperately needed to purchase equipment for city employees to do their job.
“I am the one that asked for this to be looked at,” said Kloesel. “I felt that rather than spend that much money on recreation, we need to look at the infrastructure and the equipment of our town. I had originally proposed an 85/15 split, with 15 percent going to recreation and 85 going to buying equipment.”
Kloesel said he has seen on a daily basis how city employees don’t have the equipment they need to perform their duties properly and would like to purchase what they need.
“However,” said the mayor, “Councilwoman Eva Dell Morrison asked that it be split 80/20 if the 20 percent could be allocated to constructing a pavilion at Clement Park.”
The vote passed unanimously and a public hearing will be held on September 20 take public comment on the revised proposal.
In other business, the council discussed:
•Installing a four way stop at the intersection of Church Avenue and Fourth Street.
•Changing the entire length of American Legion Road to a speed limit of 25 mph.
•The purchase of a new sewer pump at the Westgate lift station and other pumps needed for the sewer department.
Timmy Farris with the waste water department said the Westgate pump was installed in 1984 and runs 15-18 hours a day. Bids were given to the council for replacement pumps.
This pump takes care of all pumping all the sewage from the last street before getting to Highway 35 all the way to Trahan Street. (This includes Stanton Apartments, Westgate Apartments and a subdivision all rely on that pump to push sewage to the lift station.) Cost will be approximately $11,000 installed.
•Ratified raises of $325 per month to sewer department supervisors and creation of meter reading permit inspect at an additional $350 per month. (This will not create another job. The meter reader began performing another service of inspecting for variances. He assumed the responsibilities when the previous supervisor retired.
Raises for the fire and police part-timers will be put on next month’s agenda.
•Ratified the hiring of Eric Meaux as a distribution operator with the gas and water distribution department.
•Replacing the awning on the east and west entrances of the Kaplan museum.

LAGCOE leaving Lafayette for New Orleans in 2019

LAFAYETTE, LA (August 30, 2018) - LAGCOE, a nonprofit energy industry organization focused on promoting commerce and connecting people through educational programs and a technical exposition and conference, announced today it will host LAGCOE 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The move allows strategic growth for the organization and increased industry participation in the biennial expo.
“The decision to host LAGCOE 2019 in New Orleans is rooted in our mission to cultivate economic growth in the energy industry by facilitating domestic and global business development,” says Greg Stutes, Chairman of LAGCOE’s Board of Directors. “A significantly larger venue will accommodate more exhibitors and an even larger attendee base. This promotes growth, diversity, and develops even more connections among Louisiana’s energy industry.”
The LAGCOE organization remains committed to Lafayette and South Louisiana, specifically its volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors and partners throughout the region. LAGCOE offices and staff will remain in Lafayette and continue to develop new and innovative programming for members. Scholarship funds will continue to be raised and awarded to high school students through the Future Energy Professionals of LAGCOE, networking opportunities will expand, and leadership training will continue for the Young Professionals of LAGCOE.
In 1953, with humble beginnings in the parking lot of the Petroleum Club of Lafayette, a group of local oil men and women came together to create a showcase for the services and technologies of local oil- and gas-related businesses. The Lafayette community embraced the idea and industry leaders volunteered their time and talents enabling the event to grow to be the second largest oil & gas industry tradeshow in the United States. This achievement would not have been possible without significant community support.
The show was successful and continued to grow and become more popular at Blackham Coliseum, then the Cajundome, and eventually the Cajundome and Convention Center.
Today, LAGCOE hosts a three-day event that provides a platform for the industry’s innovators to present cutting-edge technologies, equipment, and services for both onshore and offshore markets. Along with traditional exhibits, LAGCOE technical sessions feature industry leaders addressing current technologies, issues and trends from around the nation and around the globe. At its peak, LAGCOE boasts representatives from 49 states, 40 countries and 17,000 attendees.
Hosting LAGCOE 2019 in New Orleans is essential to the growth of both the technical exposition and conference. It also reflects LAGCOE’s efforts to better serve the industry’s needs by adapting and reaching out to a broader audience. “The service sector is a big part of Lafayette’s commerce and New Orleans is home to many oil & gas operators, who are key decision makers. This makes LAGCOE 2019 the natural bridge between the two cities that are vital to our industry,” said Angela Cring, Executive Director of LAGCOE.
“The energy industry is changing, and we must evolve and change with it,” concluded Cring.

He touched many lives over the years

Rev. Michael Wright Sr. is gone, but he is not forgotten.
Rev. Wright passed away this week due to of cancer.
He was 64.
Before he left this Earth and went to his new mission, one thing he wanted everyone to know is not to cry about his death. Instead, remember how he lived, and he is happy because he put his trust in God.
“This is what God felt. It is a win-win situation,” said Myra Wright Allen, who is Rev. Wright’s first cousin, but considered him to be her brother.
Rev. Wright was the reverend at Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Abbeville for 30 plus years.
“He touched so many lives,” said Allen. “People will remember him as being so positive.”
Rev. Wright’s first love was being an educator in Vermilion Parish. He taught in the parish for 35 years until he retired a few years ago.
He began preaching at Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church in 1988 .
Rev. Wright was called into the ministry in the early 80’s. He served as the pastor and musician of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Patoutville, La for several years. He also served as the musician for St. Mary Congregational Church here in Abbeville. In 1988, he was elected as the Pastor of the Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church, where his grandfather, Dr. Isaiah Joiner , had served as pastor for 52 years.
It was no accident he became a minister. His grandfather and father were both pastors and Rev. Wright grew up in the church.
Because of his positive attitude about life and God, he influenced others to begin preaching.
Rev. Wright rubbed off on long-time friend Wayne Landry. Landry is also now a reverend, thanks to Rev. Wright.
“He inspired me to be in ministry,” said Landry. “He was a great man.”
Landry said he has a heavy heart about the death of his good friend and his travel partner.
“Rev. Wright was a great person who would do anything for anyone,” said Landry. “He is going to be missed.”
Kinchen Funeral Home in Abbeville is handling the funeral arrangements.
Services will be at Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Abbeville on Saturday, Sept. 1. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service.
Services will begin at noon and Rev. Mediate Derouen is officiating. Burial will take place at St. Paul Cemetery following the services.
