ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church in Erath honoring the life of Albert Joseph Friou, 44, who died Friday, January 5, 2018 at his residence. He will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery with Reverend Andre Metrejean officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Freddie Comeaux, Treg Comeaux, John Friou, Dalton Friou, Paul Friou, and Roddy Meaux.
Albert is survived by four siblings, Paul Friou and wife Dani, John Friou, Bonnie Cox and husband Jeffery, and Carmelita Gregory and husband Jeffery; stepmother, Rosa Newcomb; two nephews, Cam Friou and Josh Friou; one niece, and Kayle Friou, who he adored very much; godmother/aunt, Jeanette Friou; two other aunts, Velma Friou and Patricia Trahan; uncle, Dalton Friou and wife Sherilyn; and many couisins, nieces and nephews that he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his father, Randall Friou; mother, Barbara Trahan; sister, Carlotta Duhon; paternal grandparents, Aldest Friou and Isabelle Gaspard Friou; maternal grandparents Freddy Trahan and Lydie Trahan; aunts, Velta Friou and Tina Trahan Nugier; and godfather, Whitney Menard.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 9:00 AM until 2:45 PM when the procession will depart for church.

LAFAYETTE – Former Vermilion Caholic pole vaulter Bailey Broussard finished third (11-3 3/4) place in her first college track meet.
Broussard, a freshman, and the Cajuns track and field team opened its 2018 indoor season on Friday when it traveled to Baton Rouge to compete in the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.
Tisay Woodhouse set a new school record in the women’s indoor weight throw while Jeryl Brazil posted the fifth-fastest time in the men’s 60-meter dash nationally this season to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational on Friday at Carl Maddox Field House.
The winning pole vaulter vaulted 14.27 feet.
Stanley Limoh, Jacob Chicola and Sven Glueck each recorded first-place performances as Louisiana opened its 2018 indoor season against a talented field. Kyle Baudoin finished second overall in the men’s pole vault for Louisiana, recording the 12th-best mark nationally (16-8 ¾) with Lindsay LaGarde (women’s mile run), Jonathan Kimutai (men’s 800-meters), Richard Delphin (men’s weight throw) and Anthony Taylor (men’s shot put) each posting second-place performances in their 2018 debut.
Woodhouse, who shattered the previous indoor record by nearly three feet, recorded a personal-best of 60 feet, 10 inches on her final attempt to seal first-place honors for the Ragin’ Cajuns and post the 27th-best mark in the country. Woodhouse also claimed a second-place finish in the women’s shot put for Louisiana, recording a throw of 41-7 ¾.
Brazil clocked a time of 6.71 seconds in the preliminary round for Louisiana, .01 off his school-record time set in 2016 and fifth overall nationally. The Loranger, La., native posted a time of 6.76 in the finals to finish fourth overall, with LSU’s Jaron Flournoy claiming the crown in 6.71.
Limoh and Chicola each led their respective races from wire-to-wire with Limoh posting a time of 8:50.35 in the men’s 3,000-meter run and Chicola finishing the men’s mile run in 4:31.97. Gleuck, making his debut for the Ragin’ Cajuns, claimed first-place honors in the men’s high jump as he cleared the bar at 6-6 ¾ to post the top mark in the Sun Belt Conference.

LaGarde posted a time of 5:16.26 to finish second overall in the women’s mile run as she led a group of five Ragin’ Cajuns runners in the top 11. Kimutai placed second overall in the men’s 800-meters for Louisiana, posting a time of 1:59.00 with Logan LaGarde finishing fifth in 2:02.13.

Delphin finished second overall in the weight throw for the Ragin’ Cajuns with a mark of 57-5 ¾ with Dominique Williams finishing third (53-3). Taylor, a graduate transfer from Tulane, placed second overall in the men’s shot put for Louisiana with a mark of 51-11 ¼ in his debut. Williams finished in fourth for the Ragin’ Cajuns with a toss of 50-7 ¼.

Beating the Abbeville Wildcats in their gym is always tough, especially for the Kaplan Pirates.
Despite the odds, the Pirates pulled off the victory, 43-40, over Abbeville on Friday.
“This was a big win for the kids becaue they worked so hard in practice,” said Kaplan head coach Cody Mire. “We have come so close, losing by one or two points to different teams this season.. Tonight, we pulled it off.”
It was not easy, however.
With Kaplan winning, 41-40, with 30 seconds to play in the game, the Wildcats missed four shots under the goal that could gave them the lead.
Instead, it gave Kaplan the ball back. The Wildcats applied a full court press and managed to foul Kaplan’s Daniel Poole with 12 seconds left.
Poole could have iced the game for Kaplan had he made his two free throws. Instead, he missed both, and Abbeville got the rebound. But, they threw it to Kaplan’s Trent Dupuis under the goal.
Dupuis was fouled right away and went to the free throw line. He canned both free throws that gave Kaplan the three-point, 43-40, lead.
The Wildcats missed a three pointer as time expired.
The game went back and forth with Kaplan jumping out to its biggest lead, 33-26, as the third period game to an end.
Ryan Gratz, a Kaplan point guard, provided the spark in the third period by scoring six of his 11 points. Many of the points came off coast to coast drives after getting a defensive rebound.
The Wildcats got new life early in the fourth period by going ahead twice. Abbeville’s final lead was on Zontre Scott’s three-pointer and his two free throws that put his team ahead 40-37 with 1:32 to play in the game.
Kaplan scored the final six points over the next 90 seconds of the game.
Scott and Tyrese Sam led AHS with each 13 points. Davonte Promise made six.
For Kaplan, Cole Mire came out firing and made two 3 pointers in the first period and finished with 11 points. Dupuis scored 10 and Kade Harrington added six points.

The Kaplan Lady Pirates blew by the Abbeville Lady Wildcats 56-33 on Friday in Abbeville.
Abbeville only scored eight points in the first half and was down 36-8 at half.
Rylie Frick led Kaplan with 18 points.
With each nine points were Torri Briggs, A. Trahan, Alyia Broussard and Lexi Broussard.
Scoring for Abbeville were Kekira Moore (8), Tyrinasha Porter (7) and Oriel Henderson (6).

ABBEVILLE — Funeral services were held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, January 06, 2018 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life of Norris Joseph Hebert who gained his angel wings on January 3, 2018. He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Deacon Byron Soley officiating the services.
Norris was born on January 29, 1935 to Emanuel Hebert and Myrtle Luquette Hebert and was one of 5 children. Siblings are Dalton Hebert of Shreveport, La., Regina Hebert Ferguson of Abbeville, Jimmy Hebert Sr. (deceased) and Leo Hebert (deceased).
Norris married Yvonne Broussard Hebert on June 1, 1955. Together they raised 4 boys. Michael, Allen, Carl Brian, and Gregory Hebert.
He was an electrician by trade and started his own business “Norris Refrigeration” which was a very successful business for many years. He then worked for Zapata as an offshore electrician where he eventually retired.
Norris loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also loved gardening. He loved spending time with the family on weekends enjoying BBQ or gumbo which was one of his favorites. He was also known for baking the best home-made bread you ever ate and making huge pancakes for the grandkids.
Norris is survived by his children Allen Hebert and his wife Sylvia Sellers Hebert of Maurice, Carl Brian Hebert and his wife Lisa Leblanc Hebert of Abbeville, and Gregory Hebert and Jennifer Vaughn of Abbeville. His grandchildren Corey Hebert and his wife Staci Guillot Hebert of Maurice, Chrystal Hebert Abshire and her husband Lucas Abshire of Maurice, Lou Hebert and his wife Lindsey Poche’ Hebert of Maurice, Casey Hebert and his finance Brittni Paternostro of Alexandria, Ashley Hebert Menard and her husband Blair Menard of Leroy, and Brittany Hebert Richard and her husband Ethan Richard of Abbeville. His great grandchildren Remy Abshire, Esme Abshire, Hadli Hebert, Hudson Hebert, Bailey Hebert, Lucy Hebert, Avery Hebert, Ghazi Ayoub, Nicole Hebert and Ryan Richard, a sister Regina Hebert Ferguson and her husband Tommy of Abbeville, and a brother Dalton Hebert and his wife Martha of Shreveport, La. And numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Yvonne Hebert, a son Michael Hebert, his parents Emanuel Hebert, Myrtle Hebert, two brothers Leo Hebert and Jimmy Hebert Sr., and a great grandchild Nicole Hebert.
