ST. LANDRY WOMAN SENTENCED TO 57 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR STEALING MORE THAN $250,000 FROM AN OPELOUSAS BUSINESS

LAFAYETTE – United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced that a St. Landry woman was sentenced Monday to 57 months in prison for stealing more than $116,000 from an Opelousas-based medical imaging business.
Misty Johnson, 40, of St. Landry, La., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter on one count each of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and theft of mail. She was also ordered to pay $258,128.78 restitution. According to the July 12, 2016 guilty plea, Johnson worked as an office manager for an Opelousas medical imaging services business from January 2009 to July 2014. She was responsible for day-to-day financial operations including billing, payroll and managing accounts payable and receivable.
Her responsibilities included access to the company’s financial information and mail. She also had signatory authority on business accounts and was provided a company credit card for making purchases. In order to further the scheme, she would write checks to herself or to cash, issue herself additional paychecks and make unauthorized purchases on the company credit card. She would then alter the company’s account records to look as though she was properly paying the company’s bills. Johnson also stole company mail including past-due bills and brought them to her home. Johnson’s theft totaled $258,128.78.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dominic Rossetti and John Luke Walker prosecuted the case.

Two Louisiana men arrested by Wildlife and Fisheries for illegally selling shrimp

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two men for alleged commercial fish selling violations in Calcasieu Parish on Jan. 25.

Agents cited Kenny J. Menard, 45, of Rayne, and Jessie L. Dupuis Jr., 43, of Lafayette, for theft by fraudulent sales, selling shrimp without a retail seafood license and failing to maintain records.

Agents responded to a tip from two Hayes residents complaining about being shorted on shrimp they bought from two door to door shrimp salesmen on Jan. 25, 2017.

During the investigation, agents determined the two Hayes men were shorted about half of their agreed purchase amount of shrimp. Agents were able to identify the sellers of the shrimp and found that the men were not licensed to sell shrimp.

On Feb. 8, agents secured arrest warrants for the two men. Menard was arrested on Feb. 9 in Acadia Parish and is awaiting transport to Calcasieu Parish. Dupuis Jr. turned himself in to Calcasieu Parish authorities on Feb. 13.

Theft by fraudulent sales carries up to a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. Failing to maintain records and selling shrimp without a retail seafood license each brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

LDWF agents participating in the case are Sgts. Justin Sonnier and David Sanford.

Cajuns’ softball program sets new ticket sales record

LAFAYETTE – Season ticket sales for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball program have once again set new records in both total tickets sold and revenue generated.
For the third consecutive season a new record in quantity of tickets was reached as 1,014 were sold prior to the season-opening weekend, eclipsing the previous record of 1,006 reached in 2016. This is the second straight season of 1,000-plus tickets sold.
And, for the second consecutive season those ticket sales have generated more than $100,000 in ticket revenue. 2017 season ticket sales have resulted in a new record in excess of $115,000.
“The best thing about coaching here is representing the greatest fans whose love and support has been overwhelming throughout all these years,” Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball head coach Michael Lotief said. “This program is built on the love and the selfless giving and the contributions of so many good people who allow our student-athletes to chase their dreams.
“When we break a huddle and say ‘Us’,” Lotief added. “It is to remind everyone that our fans, and this community, are the true driving force and inspiration behind what we are able to build and achieve together.”
The Ragin’ Cajuns fan base was recently recognized as the best in the country as Lamson Park was voted No. 1 in college softball by a nation-wide poll conducted on FloSoftball.com.
Since the reconfiguration of Lamson Park – beginning with the 2012 season – Louisiana has ranked Top 20 nationally in attendance each of the past five seasons (2012-16). The Ragin’ Cajuns came in at the No. 7 spot in 2016 with a school-record average of 1,736 fans in attendance, which marked a finish in the Top 10 of the NCAA attendance rankings for the third straight season.
There are still season tickets available for purchase. Season ticket packages, starting at $121, remain on sale and can be purchased in person at the Cajundome Box Office, on RaginCajuns.com using Account Manager or by phone at (337) 265-2357.
